A manual gearbox may not be the same as a transmission. There is no clutch lever on the left side in the photos and videos of the Live Wire. I think the purpose of a manual gearbox on the Live Wire may be for the same reason the Energica has a gearbox, to simply move power from the motor to a different point in the drive train. The Energica's motor is far too large to mount like the Zero does so a gearbox is used to allow the motor to be elevated and have the primary drive sprocket to be at a lower point.

motor has a right angle drive out of it (like an angle grinder)
the lower circle is one gear, the upper larger circle is the output to the belt and the larger gear.

There is no clutch lever on the left side in the photos and videos of the Live Wire.

Neither is there a gear change pedal. I think they misinterpreted the information regarding the gears that connect the motor shaft to the belt pulley (the right angle and the "primary" reduction).
