Tesla will soon be making robots instead of electric cars
« on: January 30, 2026, 06:21:25 AM »

Tesla will soon be making your new best friend: FREMONT, CA — Tesla will stop building its Model X and S vehicles at its factory in Fremont and instead shift focus to making a million AI humanoid robots each year, the company announced Wednesday. The announcement comes as the company endures a steep drop in income and shifts gears to focus on AI projects such as robots and robotaxis. The robot will be Elon Musk's and Tesla's third generation of Optimus robots since they first launched in 2021. They're meant to be used for labor, especially dangerous, mundane or repetitive tasks. “Optimus 3 will be a general purpose robot that can learn by observing human behavior,” Musk said, according to KRON4. “You can demonstrate a task, verbally describe a task … even show it a video and it will be able to do that task. It’s going to be a very capable robot. I think, long-term, Optimus will have a very significant impact on the U.S. GDP.” The EV company run by Elon Musk reported Wednesday that net income last year dropped 46% to $3.8 billion. It was the second year in a row of steep declines. The drop came despite the introduction of cheaper models and Musk's promise to remain laser-focused on the company after a foray into U.S politics.

I would rate the chances of Musk swinging from a gallows higher than the chances of producing “a million AI humanoid robots”..with …”significant impact of IS GDP” the way polarisation is playing out in the US, involvement in politics and his history of delivering on claims.

he does have a rather poor track record of being on time with stuff but he does eventually roll out the items.
i can see the robots selling like crazy, not so much to individuals but corporations looking to get rid of the about worthless nowadays human help they have to put up with.  A robot is on time, does not insult your customers, spit in their food, have hr on speed dial, cry about it's pronouns or a number of other ridiculous things humans play when they don't get their way.  I can see someone like amazon automating with them as they are getting tired of the human factor as well.  The unions will hate it, there goes their graft money when all their shills no longer have jobs.   Speaking of, what ARE they going to do with all those now unemployed people all demanding an income just because they are alive and need weed money?

They will break though, so there will be a need for folks to service them and repair them.  Id assume they'll be vulnerable to virus' and stuff as well, so programmers to code software etc for them too.  Im hungry, hey Robitch make me a sammich.  I wonder how long before we have robot marriages and divorces too.  Feminism destroyed a generation or 3 of young women, so the robots will probably help with the impending lonliness pandemic as the screeching purple haired looking like livestock both in tonnage and colorful nose ring wearing  creatures turn towards AI for companionship because that's the only thing that won't want to suicide itself after a week or so of them.

But imagine if / when you teach a robot to ride a bike, some of the amazing races we will see.  About the only game changer / stopper will be equipment malfunctions, as they'll learn how to do everything.. well..perfectly.  An optimus on an EGO will be a sight to behold.  Then again, once we go there, you can thunderdome it too, have them take each other out on the track as well as evade... something humans can't really do to each other... well at least not multiple times generally, that could add an entire new twist to the racing sport.

interesting times ahead indeed if we don't manage to blow ourselves up in the next few years.

The nice thing about robots is that they are not affected by clouds of pepper spray.  ;)

You gotta get with the times with your haranguing meme individual Aaron, apparently the new term is an AWFUL. Boomer Karens have become too frail.

In all serious there are millions of roles (justified, morally or otherwise) that can become automated by machines or technology, however a general purpose humanoid robot is a terribly inefficient way of doing so, least of all Tesla who cannot get beyond remote management with a human in the loop.

why does it even have to be humanoid?  i mean just make it efficient at what tasks you want it to do, if you must talk to it, fine look at your stupid phone with a photo on it or something, do you NEED a metallic face to pretend it's actually sentient?

isn't the human in the loop to ensure safety before some final sign off on it, like some mandatory thing or something the govt is making him do.   in all honesty having a human handy might be a good thing when you look at some of the things that have happened with the waymo's going haywire at times.  have some real flesh let you out of the thing so you are not trapped in the middle of an intersection or something.  you like to poke fun at the progress he is making but who has something better that is as close to marketing at this point?

Oh, that wasn’t a poke at the currently limited non-autonomous fully self driving in the cars. It was a poke at the robots, far all the Optimus demonstrations have been Tele-operated, to the best of my knowledge, entirely human operated when not performing a pre-programmed task. ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa, Kuka, Universal Robots, Omron all have developed, sold and deployed robots that are able to learn tasks and respond dynamically to changing conditions. Hell, Optimus isn’t even the most capable humanoid bot form, pretty sure most rate the Figure 02. But my main point was that a general purpose humanoid bot seems like very inefficient path to automation.

Optimus will only ever be good as a butler for the mega rich, doing tasks that aren't time sensitive. It won't replace any public based worker nor physically demanding work like being in a warehouse or factory, it's too slow and clunky and weak to replace a human. The only robot I've seen that could is Boston Dynamic's Atlas, because it can work in a way beyond human capabilities. And for those roles that haven't been highly optimised for humans there will just be other types of robots like an automated fork lift or Boston Dynamic's Stretch.

So basically, Optimus is pretty much meaningless to the vast majority of people. It won't be as good as they pretend it will be or arrive as quickly as they promise and probably not be as cheap either, but none of it really matters. It's just another pet project for Elon like the hyperloop or the new roadster.

Is anyone looking forward to weekly Optimus over-the-air programming updates once the robots hit the consumer market?  ;)

could it be any worse than the weekly winblows security updates on your computer richard? then have to re 'exclude' everything because the stupid security program updates and scrubs your previous settings?

if the updates happen seemlessly in the background when i am not using the thing then fine, go for it, as long as i don't have to re teach the thing my fkn name every update because it wipes it clean.  then again i wish i had some ex's that didn't remember my name :D

That's true. There isn't much use for them at home, and only a few are needed to satisfy the worldwide demand.

Oops, wait -- that was for computers in the 1970s!

And it took a good 3 decades for computers to become common in homes. Optimus isn't a Dell desktop it's an IBM 5100, although arguably less useful and worse value for money than even that, and so my point still stands. Maybe in a few decades similar robots will be cheap enough that they have some use and value to mere mortals but this isn't it.
