@drumgadget, I think the technology is changing so fast it's going to be tough to offer upgrades to older models.

I'm sure you are right.

The engineering costs of offering upgrades probably couldn't be justified especially with the volume of sales currently under Zero's belt...especially if the program was to offer upgraded parts/mods to individual customers and there would be no telling how many would actually take advantage of the upgrades offered.

However, since the technology IS changing so fast, I hope Zero is able to find ways to recognize early adopters.  Like the trade in incentives that have been offered on older models in the past....I can guarantee that I would trade in my 2014 Zero S if Zero offered a good trade in incentive.    Now that the 2 year warranties on 2014's are all expiring soon it seems like it could be a good time for it 

If Zero DID offer another trade in incentive the old bikes could be collected and upgraded/refurbished in batches which might actually be economic depending on the extent of the upgrades.

I agree with mrwilsn and yourself regarding the factory taking an active role in upgrading earlier models.  I guess what I would like to see (as a retired elec/mech engineer) is more available info for those of us who might like to take on the prospect of an old-fashioned "engine swap" (ala '50s Hot Rodder), or more urgently - a simple battery retrofit to take advantage of the vast improvement in Li chemistry cells in the last few years.  Something like the Nissan Leaf module swap described a while ago on this forum, but backed up by at least a modicum of interest from the factory.

Yes, the trade-in incentive is a positive thing; in fact, looking into this led me directly to my recent outright purchase of a brand new 2016 SR.  But when I added up all the other financial incentives (government and factory), plus a small dealer discount, and considered the advantages of the '16 model over the 2014 bikes on offer ..... I could not see parting with my perfectly good running (for now!) 2011 S.  So I kept it and use it for around town errand running - jump on it and go!  I really like the light weight, and the chassis/suspension/brakes are more than adequate for the purpose.  I'd hate to see this cool lightweight platform become scrap just because the battery/motor/controller decided to pack up ......
