The train is really electric.  the H engine spins a generator that spins E motors to push it. pull it.
The cost to make the hydrogen is a ton more than using the electricity straight into the train w/o the extra step.
hydrogen is a pain in the ass to work with too, leaks way too easy because it's so small, and extremely explosive.
battery / charger / inverter-vfd would be a lot smarter.

Not too smart to be hauling (train) cars of batteries instead of freight.
On the other hand not too smart using hydrogen instead of batteries for typical small scale transport.
Hydrogen will have its place in large scale & niche transportation but that’s decade(s) from now.

It won't be impressive until they guarantee the hydrogen is made exclusively from solar or nuclear as opposed to methane reforming.

At that point, the debate can be about whether it's a cost-effective way to reduce CO2 emissions.

Batteries are right out. Besides taking away 50% or 80% of the freight weight (like a Tesla Semi), BEVs are among the biggest environmental disasters ever perpetrated. They rape the Earth to make them, and on average they're a significant net positive on CO2 emissions.

A similar thing could probably be said for battery storage, meaning the only true safe, low pollution source is nuclear (and solar when used in applications NOT requiring storage).

Batteries were not mentioned in the article, but fuel cells were. It looks like the H2 feeds the fuel cells which generate the electricity to power the train's motors. Still, it is stuck in the switching yard due to a lack of useful range. It would appear to be mostly a demonstration effort to see how the system works out financially.

The Hydrogen Highway, which was cleaned out a few months ago, has come to an end and is now being used to park a portable shower wagon.

sounds more like the hershey highway as the taxpayers in that place, once again take it in the ass on more govt corruption.
maybe they can use the bullet train to expedite selling off the assets to their ngo friends.

Just yesterday talking to a guy who works at Raytheon I believe in the general Hartford Ct area.  His little corner of the company has purchased 5 Toyota hydrogen vehicles from California, is going to take out the fuel cell portion and scrap the rest.  He isn't sure what the plan for those fuel cells is.
