It's been a long time coming, but I'm getting ready to commit to buying a Zero.  I went to the factory demo yesterday and liked the FXS much more than I thought I would (have previously ridden a S and SR, and thought I'd be getting an SR).  Anyway, now I'm getting down to deciding what I want for accessories along with it.

At first, I was thinking the top box, but reviews the monolock box make me think it might be better just to get the rack and then go for another box, perhaps going cheap and doing this:  http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/cheap-top-box-pelican-case-alternative-rigid-pro-organizer.1105847/.  I've never actually had a top box before, but I imagine it would be nice for picking up groceries and keeping my stuff dry in the rain.  I also question whether I'd want to get a bigger volume box, or if it would just be overkill.

I thought a little bit about the drop bars.  I won't be doing serious off roading with it.  It would just be a little insurance against an accidental drop.  Are the drop bars useful for anything else - tie downs, etc.?  Any disadvantages to having them on there, besides having paid for them?

Not interested in a windshield.  Toolkit seems like I'd be better off to just get the one or two things i don't have.

I've never been big into farkling and mostly stick with stock.  Any other accessories that you'd really recommend?

Its actually the windshield that I regret not getting.  But that's just due to the difference in riding on highways between SoCal and my home state of Minnesota.  I ended up adding a windshield which makes getting to work more bearable.

I bought the windshield, rear rack, top box, a seat pack, tank bag and throw-over fabric saddlebags.  Now I can carry lots of stuff and almost never need to drive my car.

Get one that doesnt have howling brakes. If it howls at the dealer when you pick it up, don't accept it

love to see a pic of your set-up. i just put a super small tank bag on my FXS because i was tired of stuffing things in my pockets or carrying another bag.

currently working on a custom phone mount just above the bar clamps.

I had to mod the axle sliders a little, just ground a little off the inside on the disc sander. On my FX rears I used Woodcraft 10mm spools with some all thread rod and nylock nuts. Good idea to put some o-rings or thin tubing on the rods to keep it all centered. Paint nuts and rod ends black for the stealth look. The foot peg sliders should work on all modern Zeros as I think all the pegs are the same? The Jaybee ones come in different colors if you fancy! after a little more research with the info provided by you, i think i will be making my own using skateboard wheels, some threaded rod, and a couple washers and nuts, for half the cost.

should look cool too. 

hit the skate shops tomorrow and see what i find. going to the track tomorrow for the first time with the bike and would like to have this sorted before i go...

That will work just fine. Not sure about cost as I haven't bought skateboard wheels for 30 years! Useful tip, thread an ordinary nut onto rod then cut. This way when you back it off it will chase threads making it easier to install nylocks, acorn or whatever nuts your using.

thanks but this isn't my first rodeo... 

i wired my own OBD-2 cable and re-mapped my 990. i have made more one off, custom, i need them, want them, won't pay that price parts for my multiple bikes than i can count.

i can get this done for under $30 and make it original and cool.

post some pics tomorrow assuming i can find the wheels i want....
