2014 Zeros
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:48:50 PM »

Since it was looking that the 2014 Zero comments were spread around a bit, I thought it might be a good idea to lump the comments under one clear subject title.  Here is a link to the Zero specs, including prices:

http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/zero-s/specs.php

the studio photos are here:

http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/gallery/?utm_source=zero-db&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=2014%2BLaunch

My thoughts are that all the Zeros look much improved, the forks look new and maybe the rear shock.  However, I have never heard of the manufacturer of the rear brake caliper.  I like the idea of the power tank.  You can leave it home when you don't need it and stuff it in when you need to go for a long ride.  However, it does make the bike pretty heavy and the cost is quite a bump up from the standard 11.4 S.  Oh well, it is still cheaper than average optioned BMWs.  The SR a bit over-the-top for my needs.

Zero FX

I noticed that they have changed the frame slightly making it a bit stronger.

Nice headlights, nicer seat for two, bigger front forks, stronger brakes, nice gauge cluster.

Looks like it gained 5 lbs over the 2013 for the 5.7 which accounts for the suspension and frame changes.

Frame is 2.5lbs heavier in itself.

Brakes
2013  >  2014
221x4.5 mm disc  >   240x4.5 mm disc

Front Shocks

38mm   > 43 mm

I wonder when they are making the 2014's available.

I hope I can get it this year!

The console display looks much more useful. On the 2013 models, the only information obtainable at a glance is speed and 11 bars of battery charge resolution, which is certainly fine, but this appears to add torque and riding mode to that.

The battery resolution meter has gone numeric with a smaller bar readout, which I think is a (small!) step backwards in usability, since the brain can process discrete counts (the previous 11 bars) better than a near-continuous percentage. What I'm getting at is the quick rapid-thought mental calculation that happens when you look at that meter and wonder as we all do, how much range is effectively left based on our remaining ride choices. (I am being pedantic, but I do work at a visualization/analytics company, so cognitive factors are part of my job.)

Speaking of riding modes, the list of "sport, eco, custom" implies that custom is specifically customizable, and I hope that the other modes are also still customizable. Perhaps, even if the existing modes are somehow partially fixed, if the customization UI on the phone were improved, then that would make up for it overall.

The rear tire is listed as a 140 width for a better contact patch. That would certainly be important for all the models, but especially the SR, where the torque is amped up! I certainly would like a better contact patch for riding in wet weather.

Better brakes and suspension seem like a pure improvement, certainly.

It appears, as listed under the motor, that sport and eco are not customizable, but do have regen settings set appropriately for those modes. So they look like a strategy of providing better defaults, after having customer feedback on 2013 models, and customization on the rider's own mode for day to day use (whatever that is).

Anyone notice the prices are $1000 less than the 2013 S and DS models for both the 8.5 and 11.4 configurations? I'm very excited about Zero's direction!

Of course! I wonder whether they have scale factors working for their supplier costs now that they've proven the level at which the 2013 models sold, or whether they expect a higher margin on the SR/Powerpack sales to balance it out.

Here is a blog with photos showing the press conference at the EICMA show:

http://news.motorbiker.org/blogs.nsf/dx/eicma-2013-zeros-sr-electric-motorcycle-launch.htm

I like the new instrument display and it finally has a clock.  It will be interesting to see who makes the new forks.  The rear shock is looking like the Fast Ace one, though.   ???

I believe I read somewhere today that the bikes were scheduled to be delivered to dealer's showrooms starting sometime in January 2014.  Since my dealer is just a 90 minute drive from the factory no doubt they will be getting some of the first bikes off the line.  I imagine that my dealer is looking forward to me visiting the showroom and handing over my credit card for a deposit on a new S model.   ;)

Worth looking at combined cycle range for the highway-capable Zero bikes over the years.

2011: ~25 miles @ $10k
2012: 43 miles @ $11.5k, 63 miles @ $14k
2013: 48 miles @ $10.5k (XU), 70 miles @ $14k, 93 miles @ $16k
2014: 69 miles @ $13k, 93 miles @ $15k, 116 miles @ $17.5k

Obviously prices have continued to go up, but so have the capabilities. Zero keeps shifting their price points so that it's hard to compare over years, but consider the $14k price point.

- 2012 Zero S ZF9 offered 63 miles
- 2013 Zero S ZF8.5 offered 70 miles
- 2014 Zero S ZF8.5 and ZF11.4 bracket the price, and average 76 miles

Ignoring all other improvements, range has gone up about 10% per year since 2012. Not bad.

Here is Motorcycle.com's take on the new 2014 Zero range after looking at it on the EICMA show stand:

http://blog.motorcycle.com/2013/11/06/videos/eicma-2013-2014-zero-sr-first-impressions-video/

And just for fun, here are some new and weird small utility electric "motorcycles" (?) that were also introduced at the show:

Just want to add that there is a "MMX" model in the press galleries. A somewhat stripped FX with knobbies, chain drive and low-tech dashboard. It's not presented in motorcycles tab and from what I've seen it's not even mentioned anywhere.

This is the military version they offered last year, which got basically the same upgrades as the 14 FX.  If you download the press material packet on the website there's a few pages on it.
