NCA cells (LiNiCoAO2) - stability??

Right,

So I'm looking towards NCA as a charge pack solution for this EV bike build. Now I've heard plenty of the horror stories from the EV bicycle lads about these cells taking a notion towards the dramatic and going up in a ball of flames, however I'm curious to know just how significant this reduction in stability over the likes of NMC or LFP actually is as I'm highly inclined towards the suspicion that they simply weren't maintained appropriately in the horror story instances.

...so, how about it, anyone out there got any experience of working with NCA at 3-4C discharge rates?

I believe Tesla uses NCA in the Model S. Haven't heard many stories about the Model S cars going up in flames, even though each car packs ~8500 cells.. at least for the 85 kWh variant.

Doesn't mean it's impossible to do, of course, just that it is possible to engineer a safe system.

Tesla S P85 is 416 hp = 313 kW, or about 3.7C.
Tesla S 60 kWh is 362 hp = 272 kW, or about 4.5C.

Hadn't got those figures for the Tesla (or thought to get them) - that's a good benchmark, cheers!

Pretty much tells me what I wanted to know alright - stable 4C is doable (in a burst at least, which is all I need). Nice one!
