Zero has submitted paperwork to NHTSA initiating subject recall.  It seems the motor controller manufacturer used high resistance fasteners on the bus bar that can cause an overvoltage and shutdown.  Attached is Zero's Part 573 Safety Recall Report.  Note on page 4 that owner notification will not begin until January 9 next year.

That's kind of an interesting recall.
you'd think that the fasteners just hold the bus bars together, and of course conduct themselves but, the metal to metal of the bus bars in contact with each other should carry the brunt of the current, unless there are some other entities at work here, maybe galvanic corrosion or something.  i  get the friction but still..

At least they figured it out and are correcting it so that's good.

i wonder how long it's going to take to change that part out, is it something they can do while customer waits or will you need to leave it for a day or three?

The different coating of the bolts gave a different coefficient of friction during tightening, resulting in a different clamping load at the same tightening torque. While the initial clamping load may have been adequate for the current (thus why the bikes didn't fail right off the lot) over time it wasn't enough to stop the bolts from loosening. That's how the discovered the fault, loose bolts after an inspection.

I'm surprised it's taking them so long to deal with considering it's only 7 bikes effected and a relatively easy fix.

They were maybe hoping the people may not have noticed, and avoided the whole pr thing of it possibly?  Now that the cat's out of the bag, better nip it before something worse comes out of it.

But that's what I'm saying, they notified dealers on the 5th, will have a fix sorted by the 19th, but then not contacting owners until the 16th of January? It's 7 bikes, they could have the owners tracked down and contacted in an day's work.

Or published the VINs in the recall and then owners like myself would be more aware to look for the recall in the mail?

Is there any way to tie it to the production date? Speaking of which I've just noticed in the recall notice that spans a period of 10 months, surely they built more than 7 DSR/X's in that amount of time? Perhaps I'm mistaken and they mean 7 variations. At first that seemed like an unrealistic amount but current I can think of the base model, charge tank, and power tank equipped ones and then black forest might count as a fourth, I don't remember if they ever had variants with lower battery capacities.
