"Last I checked solid state batteries are so volatile that, if ruptured or damaged via something like a collision, the chemicals inside ignite on contact with not only air, but also ignite on contact with water. They also emit a deadly vapor that will most certainly kill the occupants of the vehicle and everyone around them. Has something changed?"

Yes something has changed.

How big is the battery?  Besides the chemical issues, which have largely been worked around, the biggest problem has been brittleness, which keeps the size down significantly so they don't bust up and quit working in a weeks time.  If this is true, this could be a game changer for everyone, and it really is only a matter of time before something new pops.

Supercaps, now that they are really being put to the test, are not that much 'super' over chem.  They don't last millions of cycles as originally once touted.  In the case of bikes, their main problem is they can't go very high on voltages, like 3 volts, so for a huge app like a 400 volt battery, a lot of room would be wasted on isolation and dielectrical issues.  Unless you were to run a 48 volt system, but now were talking huge amps, heat and weight for the conductors.

the sodium batteries may be better for longer term storage like power plants etc but has a lower power density so isn't a good fit for vehicles.

Sodium is already being successfully rolled out in urban vehicle applications - JAC/Yiwei Sehol E10X (Hina cells) and the JMEV EV3 (Farasis cells). Less power density but way safer, cheaper, and apparently faster charging too. Hopefully they will find their way into low-end motorcycles to make them competitive with ICE peers.

but the biggest complaint is range, they go the opposite way for fixing that.

The biggest complaint about range is from people who don't own EVs... for everyone that does own an EV you very quickly figure out that you almost never go anywhere near as far as the ridiculously expensive heavy battery you bought can take you, so you're lugging around $10,000 and 500kg you didn't need to everywhere.

I now know for example that I would have been entirely happy with a car that only had 100 mile range instead of 240 miles. My next car will have a much smaller battery and be loads cheaper. Looking at that Renault 5.

Truth matters little in this world.  The kids been taught there is no such thing as truth, it's all about 'perception' and that's all that matters is your perception.  If the trend on fakebook says it's not enough then it's not enough.

I can often put 100 miles a day on a bike it's not that hard to do, and having that range is very useful for me.  if i decide to do a one day shot at the track thats 250 on the bike, 100 up and down and about 50 on the track.  The hardest part is keeping the bike below 75 so i can get 100 miles off a single charge / trip without having to pull in to charge somewhere to finish the trip.  Other people who like to ride / tour also need the extended range.  in the case of a vehicle, people using it to haul stuff, absolutely need the bigger battery.

in your case if you are just puttering around town, your range is going to be probably double, so yah you don't need the bigger better bike, a cheaper one will do you just fine.

No, I cane it to work and back every day, day in, day out, 25 miles each way :) But I did recently do a cross-country trip back from Cornwall - 111 miles, got home with 10% remaining, wasn't hanging about but that's the reality of how fast you can ride on the road here.

Regarding the perception of truth, I think maybe it's high time we started teaching kids philosophy at school...

Help help!
Morgan save us all with your insider knowledge from Zero's 2012 recalled burning battery pack designer Luke Workman.
Mercedes seems to think they just tested a solid state EQS that went over 700 miles.
Contact them please and tell them how impossible it is and how they risk killing all life, well likely in the whole universe.

You are our only hope.

Looks like The Electric Viking's channel is in on it too.

minute 4:35 or so same weight and volume 25% more kwh contained in chemical energy.  The guy won't say if that run was an 70 something km/hr or mi/hr.  That is about as far as I got.  My idea of game changing is 250 kw or more of charging with signs on the interstate and the ability to charge up with cash.

Is this a flame war?  back in the usenet era before internet I understood is to just ignore was a good policy.

new2elec is still salty because I called Damon a scam from day 1 and he routinely soiled himself with rage for several years while I mocked him for doing so.

Fran, you say to pay in cash, do you mean real cash like shoving dollar bills into the machine, or would a credit card suffice?

i can understand the reluctance against using cash, genuine cash.  it makes them extremely vulnerable, and now adds a lot of extra maintenance to it now as well.  you gotta go empty the bill box out, unclog the jammed wet bill in there, the crap the vandal shoved into the slot bla bla.

some of the stations i have seen have similar, you go in pay the clerk and they can turn the thing on for like 10 dollars, anything left you go get your change.  but leaving cash laying around unattended, that's just inviting uncle scritchie and aunt methyl to come steal it and break the thing.  especially if it's an unattended / remote ish location w/o surveillance.

I mean like for gasoline where you go in and hand them money and they turn on the pump.  Perhaps most of you have multiple cards debit/ credit or the like.  I am in Wv now and my card is from Monson Ma.  There were unauthorized charges and the card got shut down.  they shut it down a few times when I signed up for stuff that takes it out once a year and were suspicious. They can turn it back on if the charges are authorized but it takes a phone call to a real person during business hours.  I need to go to the office in Ma to get a new card.  I have also an account here in WV/Ohio.  I got a new card but the deal was $35 and have it overnighted or wait a week or so.  Neither would be of any good if I wanted to purchace gas or electric and got a message card refused.
