Got an interesting issue with my 2020 SR/F: I can't unlock the seat. It used to work but this morning when I turn the key, nothing happens. ??

Probably got a bit of slack in the mechanism.... you've probably tried already, but squish the seat and jiggle it and it might come loose.

I wish it were that simple. When I insert the key, I can rotate the barrel 360 degrees in either direction and the seat remains locked.

Ah, it shouldn't turn more than about 25 degrees or something (from memory) - sounds like it is entirely detached. Sucks to be you etc. I'm not sure that it's possible to get any further under the seat without that first hurdle being released, which is a massive embuggerance.

They make needle nose vise grips, or long billed needle nosed pliers.  Point being, can you maybe pry the seat up a bit, find the cable and latch onto it and give it a tug to unlatch so you can get it open and maybe fix or rig up a better workaround?  If not tug, grab it clamp down and twist, which will be the same as tugging it as it wraps around the tool?

If you can get up in there it's worth a try.

I wish I had a shop.  The one closest to me closed to zeros anyway (~50 miles), now I have to go closer to 90 miles if I need service (bummer).

point being, some things are general, brakes, tires, chains, maybe change a fluid if you supply it etc,  any shop should be able to work that for you, it's not something that is only on a zero or requires specialized knowledge.

Oh, I know Aaron.  I had my local shop install my new tires last month.  I was just thinking about stuff like controller commissioning etc.  Not something I have to worry about for a while I hope (my new to me battery and supporting electronics are working very well so far).

That's a good question. A few years ago I had a couple of tires I needed mounted on my SR. A friend recommended his favorite shop so I gave them a call. The owner's response: "I ain't working on no ****ing electric motorcycle in my ****ing shop!"

I shared that information here and in the Facebook Zero Owners Group and apparently the hate didn't take long and he lost a LOT of business (he did earn some new customers from eMotorcycle haters though).  In any event another friend recommended his favorite shop and that guy was more than happy to do the job for me. Now the local Cycle Gear around the corner does tire mounting and balancing as long as you just bring them the wheels so that's what I've been doing ever since.

The dealer called to give me the news. Most of the parts are pretty inexpensive BUT the kicker is the locking mechanism itself. Zero doesn't sell the main barrel in pieces, only as a complete unit. That means a new lock and a new key. The cost? $200!

There's nothing the shop can do about the price but the mechanic did say he'd see if it's possible to swap out the barrel from the broken unit into the new unit so I don't have to carry an extra key just to remove the seat. I'll keep y'all posted!

Do you HAVE to have it keyed and locked?  There is a mod where you can change out the key for lifting the seat to charge it, with just a knob you turn.  If the thing turns, glue the key in and just use it as a turn latch, or tig it or whatever but turn it into a knob basically.  Might save a few dollars, and yah that's usually the case they don't sell parts, only whole assemblies.

You don't need to lift the seat to charge it. The charger flap is in front of the seat and doesn't have a lock. You need to remove the seat in order to secure a helmet. The helmet isn't particularly secure if the seat can be removed without a key.

I realize they can simply cut the strap (it's happened to me before) but it provides a slight modicum of security.

Or you could buy a cheap Chinese helmet lock that attaches to the bike's frame from Amazon. I installed one of those on all of my bikes that didn't come with a helmet lock from the factory. Of course, that does mean that you will have another key to carry around.
