BYD solid state battery development news

Here is the latest from BYD. Pretty sad that the focus is just on having an unnecessarily long range and not cutting the battery weight in half, and increasing cabin/storage space if the size:energy ratio is also better. Not saying they won't do that, but it just shows what everyone is focussed on.

Double the range means you can instead do half the size. But I'll take double the range :) (for my bike, the car already does 250 miles)

Well BYD are unlikely to start making bikes and they always lag behind in EV tech so it's largely irrelevant in this case. But for cars range is not a concern for 98% of people's daily trips. Weight is a concern though, it ruins handling, increases tyre and road wear, increases stopping distances, reduces efficiency.

Last I checked solid state batteries are so volatile that, if ruptured or damaged via something like a collision, the chemicals inside ignite on contact with not only air, but also ignite on contact with water. They also emit a deadly vapor that will most certainly kill the occupants of the vehicle and everyone around them. Has something changed?

I've been saying for a while with the roughly 40% volumetric density improvement of solid state you could do a one for one cell replacement on an Eva Ribelle and get comparable range to something like a Tuono V4 or MT-10 (actually your headline lab range would be more but real world range would be same ballpark). About 100% improvement in gravimetric energy density also seems to be about standard which would net you about a 25ish kilo weight saving all combined with better thermal tolerances and and lower thermal output under charge.

More range for cars is kinda pointless really but solid state enabling higher capacity motorcycle batteries and potentially solving the packaging problems with active thermal systems is an absolute game changer.

As far as I can tell the opposite is actually true though I understand they're more volatile during manufacture.

I am pretty sure that we won't see BYD's batteries on the retail market any time soon as they will likely want to keep the batteries for their cars and not sell them to other companies. And in any case, you can really forget to see those batteries in an electric motorcycle for a lot longer than I am likely to be alive, unless BYD decides to manufacture a motorcycle and I am not putting any money on that happening in the future.

another problem is well,  even wear / useability, or you could kind of think of it as, balancing.
liquids can kind of move around a bit and during the process of charge / discharge, move around and touch the, lets call it event horizon where the actual reaction is happening to make the electric.  This means that it all gets used pretty easily.  Solid now, only the part actually touching 'chemical b' is reacting, just like with the liquid, but once that part is used, getting the rest of it ..up there.. to react and make electricity, is kind of an issue.... liquid moves around, solids, not so much.  yes this is kind of an odd way of explaining it but i think you see my point.  if you liquefy it, it's no longer solid state.  So you can have chemical issues at interface points that are problematic.
The main bugaboos with these are Hydrogen Sulfide, which can be quite deadly, and as a kicker, once you smell it, it can destroy the receptors so you can't sense it anymore..sniff sniff... eww who farted... sniff sniff oh it's gone now...no, you just don't smell it anymore and it's quickly killing you.

The other bugaboo potential is arsenic.  Then you have phosphorus compounds, halides, arsenic, and the reactive metals lithium etc.  They can be quite a bad mess once compromised.

currently it's looking like probably 2028 to 2030 to really see them hitting the mainstream,IF... everything goes well, there are still several issues to overcome.  They are brittle, and upsizing them to vehicle size is challenging, and being bigger, the brittle issue is compounded.  Technology in current lion tech is improving itself every year as well, and a number of people are predicting that with the continual improvements we see with lion,  the SSB may not even really be needed, given it's increased cost, and dangers, difficulties.

IF one were to come out, we could potentially see our EGO's and Ribelles hit 400 miles per charge, but be able to recharge in 10 to 15 minutes.

personally, id rather see the bike run at say 450 volts, it'd still be within the 400 A of the controller, but be able to give an eazy peazy 200 hp.  this would also mean that you would need less amps, so would keep things cooler too however to be honest, amps is indirectly tied to heat production as C rate is much more a factor.   100 amp coming in at 0.5 c is not a big deal, will make a lil heat,  coming in at 5C now, yah yer gonna heat things up.

ps.  there are plenty of people making these ssb's now, (or at least in the rat race to be first to market with one) so it isn't just one or two companies, so a good chance they may be available for bikes too.
