18 seconds to charge an auto EV battery?

 :o  The British RML Group company says that they have developed a battery that they call VarEVolt. They claim that it can be fully recharged in only 18 seconds and they also say that they are starting to mass produce the battery. Personally, I am not buying this tale.  ??? My guess is that they are tolling for investors and with a claim like this they could very well get a lot of them on the hook: https://www.livescience.com/technology/electric-vehicles/ev-battery-that-recharges-in-just-18-seconds-green-lit-for-mass-production

I think the real hint that it might just possibly be bullshit is that it would require the output of a small power station for those 18 seconds.

another thing to keep in mind, when they say battery, they are most likely talking about one cell / one unit, NOT an entire battery pack, so with that.

We could take a nominal 3.6 volt battery with a capacity of 5000 mah  (5 amp hours) which equals 18 watts.
if you pushed 1 watt hour per second you could charge that in 18 seconds.    1 wh/sec is 3600 watts of power or a 240 volt circuit pulling 15 amps, which is what your bike currently charges at now.

one cell in our bike is roughly 65 amp hours, so you'd need to pump 195 amps at 240 vac to charge 1 cell in 18 seconds.  the bike has what 96 of them in it?

but at what cost? the heat, the degradation etc.

Perhaps some new type of level five charging of a billion or so watts for 18 seconds?

This battery is unbelievingly good. "6 kilowatts per kilogram".
Lithium-Ion only have 0.2-0.3 kilowatts per kilogram and Lithium-Iron have about 0.15 kilowatts per kilogram.
So to be equal to the Zero 14.4 Kilowatt battery you would only need two and a bit kilograms. Put in five kilograms of this battery and more than double the battery capacity and range. And lose 40-50 kilograms in weight.

even the ultracaps have limits to their rates. you can't hammer one at like a 500Ccharge rate, at least not too many times before it gives up the magic smoke.  I think i seen 10C was the fastest one advertised, the heat is what kills them.  Currenrly they are nothing more than mylar and carbon really, which does not stand to higher temps too well.   Their weight to power ratio is not super keen either , maybe 15percent ish lighter than lith cells.

Let me travel to the future, future me (he's an asshole too) has a nuclear piezo battery the  size of a shoebox, that can put out 1.21 jiggawatts of power on demand.  Some describe it like a bolt of lightning, unlike the bike lightning, that only arcs when you press the start switch....

I thought the same at first but they're talking about power output, not energy capacity. As a comparison my 7.2 model can put out 33kW from its ~40kg battery, but using this VarEVolt battery it could get away with using one that weighed as little as 5.5kg. It however would have far less capacity. As mentioned in the article they'd be good for something like a hybrid where you might want high power but don't really need it for a long duration, just to fill in the gas engine or provide an additional boost and then you can recharge it while driving.
