This is pretty cool technology, and it does take away one of the benefits of the electric bike over the ICE world.  The ability to ride without a clutch.

ICE fanatics: I love the gears and the clutch too much, they're inherent to motorbikes, you can't possibly remove it, blah blah blah ...
Also ICE fanatics: DCTs, Quick Shifters, Autoblippers, this thing ...

Watch those videos.  This new type of clutch automation allows you to ride stop and go traffic, come to a complete stop, and start from a stop,  without ever touching a clutch lever, but still gives you the ability to shift gears with the foot shifter at any speed.

Much better that a quick shifter and an autoblipper in terms of versatility and performance, without going to a full auto transmission.

I need to test ride this machine!

It also adds only a few lbs of weight, costs only an extra $100, and can be turned off and ridden like any other manual bike. I haven't tried one yet, but it sounds like a big step forward from the auto-clutch in my 2007 FJR AE, and with potential for broad appeal.

I wonder is this is something honda is going to have dibs on for a few years or if everyone is going to adopt the tech?
It seems like it could be a major game changer if it does work as intended and is not a nightmare.

Then again I know something that is even easier than a clutch

Honda's E-Clutch system is sure a lot simpler than BMW's automatic shifter, which is fully enclosed inside the engine case and if it doesn't work would likely be horribly expensive to repair when out of warranty. I really like the Honda system as it is mounted mostly outside the engine case and would be a snap to fix if there was a problem. Plus, it sounds like it works better than those clunky "quick-shifters" when shifting from first to second.

I was thinking more of an electric bike...  much simpler than a clutch system   But yes BMW's thing is horriffic.  It'll be interesting to watch this develop and see how it does over time.  It does like it is something that is going to be a bit of a game changer IF it works as designed, and how they think it will.

I’m going to be wary of BMW’s implementation for a couple of years until I hear from owners about reliability, and that goes double for KTM. Honda has the biggest head start on everyone with their DCT and their new e-clutch seems well thought-out. Kawasaki’s auto-shifting impelmentation on the Ninja 7 and Z7 hybirds is interesting, but it sounds like it needs more time in the oven.

Yamaha had the Y-CCS, which worked pretty well on the 2006-2009 FJR’s, although it’s not exactly beginner-friendly and was downright scary until I got used to it.* They pretty much gave up on the concept until the recent announcement of their Y-AMT system, which sounds pretty promising, except that they’re trying it out on the MT-09 first and not the Tracer. That’s kind of a head-scratcher, as I can’t imagine many super-naked buyers would want an auto-clutch.

*Imagine learning to ride a top-heavy, 650 lbs machine with a 1300cc, 100 ft lbs motor equipped with an auto-clutch system that revs in neutral until you hit an unpredictable RPM where it suddenly dumps the clutch and wants to take off like a scalded cat. Now imagine that it also has a sticky throttle and abrupt fueling. I wonder why they never sold very many of them? Wonderful bike after I got used to to it, though.
