Hi,

I was browsing in the Cypher store, when I suddenly noticed that currently Cypher updates are not available. It says: '2024 Cypher Upgrades coming soon - This includes feature upgrades for all qualifying motorcycles. Thanks for your patience'.

Attached a screenshot. Just an error or something else..? Does anybody know what we can expect?

Not sure if this is related to Zero Cyberstore. Here is a video about "Subscriptions Are Ruining Our Lives. Here's Why They're Everywhere Now." In this two months old video they mention that US is working on new set of laws regarding use of equipment you've bought.

None of it was a subscription right, it was just a one time purchase?

That's a good point. It was also mentioned in the video. Pay to activate parts that are built in, so you've already paid for them.
Basically it boils down to who owns what you purchased. Some people are happy to get partial use of equipment and pay extra if they need more. Others get pissed if every little feature is not enabled all the time.

There is also another thing to keep in mind. Like owners of Vanmoof bicycles found out when Vanmoof went bankrupt. If the product you bought has software locks that depend on connecting to a server on the internet to function. What happens when the server is not there anymore. Or you have no internet.

T.S.  You bring excellent points about the whole internet bullshit and the substandard schlubscription model.
Even the stuff that is 'free' now, in 3 years, they are going tits up so, hey lets charge 5 dollars a month for what we used to give them for free, see if that helps our  bottom line.  or... we have a new version, if they want support they can but the NEW one, ...stop giving them support for the old one..... it always ends that way.  just ask Apple.

Oh hey this device shows you EVERYTHING you ever could want to SEE !!!!  You just have to goto our server to retrieve the info... until the server is not there anymore.

Given more and more people live a throw away society, more and more you are going to see models goto this.  it actually makes manufacturing easier, instead of having to do 50 runs of something in different variations, you do one run, fully loaded and just turn stuff on and off at will.  They want it, they can rent it.  From a retailers pov this is a win win because even if you opted to not get something, it's still there, and they can nag you until you decide to give it a try then buy it, whereas if your vehicle was made without it, it's NOT there to use as a nag tool to try to constantly upsale you.

Devices are not made to OWN anymore, things are rented for a few years.. then you 'trade in' for the newer model etc etc.
Long gone are the washing machines that will last 30 years, you may have to replace a belt or an idler pulley every decade or so,now it's a control board that goes out in 4 years and it's 700 dollars for a new one... or 829 for a whole new washer...

My old Kenmore dishwasher and clothes washers lasted for 40 years and were still working fine until I bought a new one to save on energy costs. The new ones are claimed to only last 10 years - which is likely longer than I will last.

Richard, my parents both passed in 2012  in the garage they had a refrigerator that they got on their wedding day back in 1951 and it STILL RAN!!

mom used it as a dry storage cabinet because the electrical energy it needed to run was ungodly but 60 years and still running fine.   now as you said they are dead in probably 5 years.

I had a cheap ass washer in fact the cheapest pos I could get it was a kenmore and it lasted almost 20 years, and I finally ended getting a new one because it took less electricity and I was heavy into the solar and stuff etc.  but still have it as a backup in the event my new bigger one finally bites it.   I had to get a new one because the idler pulley broke, but I got a new pully / bearing assy for like 30 dollars at the time, and it will probably last another 20 years if / when I put it back in there.   everything is relays and hard switches in the rotary dial.  none of this control card BS to fry the first time a lightning strike hits within a quarter mile like today.  even if something does die, you can literally open the top up and twist two wires together   there is the agitator,  swap stator ok now it's in spin cycle,  the pump runs off the motor / pulley belt.  I mean it really is a genius in it's design simplicity.

Ah, the good old days! They just don't make stuff like they used to. I am not looking forward to the next big solar storm that fries the electrical grid and all of our fancy electronic gadgets, which are not hardened against solar radiation. I need to keep my tin foil hat nearby, just in case.

an EMP  can fry a lot of shit, BUT that does not mean it WILL.   Ive seen some stuff take pretty nasty hits and still work fine.  Then Ive seen stuff get killed by a rat running along the wires and the static electric from the little shit got into a FET or CMOS or Hall Effect device and just fry it.

Even with your tin foil hat, if you have your earbuds on at the same time listening to Rush Limbaugh, the pulse will run up the plugs, jump across the vacuum between your ears and cook it anyways !!
