belt tension at krikit gates
« on: January 29, 2024, 03:48:20 PM »

hello, what is the recommended tension for an srs with the kikrit for the belt.
for those who tighten their own belts, do you do it with the wheel on the ground or on the central stand?
I think we have to do it with the bike on the ground, because I've already broken 2 of them.
however the belt has always been well aligned, and tensioned between 62 Hz - 82 Hz (70 Hz in my case).
Thank you for your advice and answers.

Belt tension limits and adjustment procedures are in the Owner's Manual.  Belt tension limits with the Krikit are 51 - 102 kg.  I measure mine with the bike on the center stand.  The Service Manual, available on the Zero Motorcycles website, also states to raise the rear wheel off the ground.

I tension mine on a paddock stand, to 55kg. Both times I've let the shop touch the belt, it snapped within 100 miles. Grrr.

I alligned en tensioned my belt (2020 SRS) last weekend. On the center stand. Please make sure you make a test drive and test again, sometimes the belt will settle a bit and need some additional adjustments. And please tension on the lower end of the range (around 65Hz / 55kg). I use both the Krikit Gauge and the Gates App by the way, just to be sure..

Surprisingly one of the very best ways to calibrate that tension is to twang it and listen. Learn the sound and feel of 55kg :)

Or try to turn it sideways. It should turn max 90 degrees. When it is less (to tight) or more (to loose), time to adjust!

FWIW I bought two of them, and they showed different tensions. I ended up using the phone app exclusively. I also tested the phone app out of curiosity by generating sine waves on my PC with Audacity, and seeing if the app reported the frequency correctly. It did.

I use the center stand for setting the belt.

On my bike, there is a slight offset in the rotating parts somewhere that creates a difference of a few Hz at different repeatable positions of the rear wheel. So I take that into account. Also, when my rear axle bolt is tightened back up to 75ft/lbs, the overall Hz increases by 6-8 hz. So I also take THAT into account.

One more thing: look at the motor sprocket as well when centering the belt. After some practice I can nail it now, having the belt centered at the motor and showing about 1mm of space between the fence or guide on the rear sprocket, and the edge of the belt.

Viewed from the rear, tighten the left side to send the belt more to the right, and tighten the right side to send it more to the left.

Tightening the left side has a far greater effect on belt tension than the right, so generally I get in range with the left, then adjust tracking with the right.

No one ever tensions my belt but me, and in 50k miles its never broken. Maybe coincidence, maybe not.

Thank you for all the information and advice.
I'm going to check this weekend and find out the values I get after 1000 km with my new belt.

Since both Zero and Gates say that the app is a better way to tune the belt, why not do it that way?

yes it's true, I agree with you.
but when you break your belt even though you are sure of the tension and alignment, you ask yourself a lot of questions.
I even questioned all my mechanical skills.
but what did I do wrong??? lol
my bmw 1200rt has 150,000 kms, and for example, I rebuilt the gearbox this summer.
I never had any mechanical problems after intervention, except for this damn belt.
also I wonder if there really was a batch of poor quality belts.

I also never had a belt snap on either of my F800s in about the same mileage that I've had 2 break on the Zero, and the F800s make rather a lot more instantaneous torque than the SR/F.

also I wonder if there really was a batch of poor quality belts.

Every dealer/service person I've talked to says they saw it.  I've only got 2k-some miles on mine, no issues, and believe me, I like my full throttle time a lot.  I also treated mine with the recommended lube very early on, and have not adjusted it at all.  I did check tune with the Gates app.
