« on: May 06, 2023, 02:57:04 AM »

Hello,

Anyone around that area know if its safe to ride my motorcycle to Tahoe on Highway 88 now? No snow etc?
I'm looking to ride up there on May 13th and head back to bay area on 14th.

Forget the entire trip. Heavy snow up there right at this very minute. And even after it stops snowing, it will take a while to melt. And when it does melt, the roads will be wet at any shady areas for quite a while. And if cold, there could be black ice. Don't chance it.

Come down this way instead!

Thank Don! Yuma is a bit too far off for a 2 day trip, so that might not be possible either 😞

FWIW, I have ridden in the Sierras countless times. I have made many U-turns at the higher elevations, weeks after the last snow. In the shady areas, the snow and ice take forever to melt. Wider, more used freeways (such as I-80) will be much less of a problem than the smaller roads.

BTW, it looks like no more snow is coming to the Sierras for a while. But that does not make it all safe.

There are many motorcycle accidents on the Mt. Rose Highway (near Reno) every year when people start out on a nice warm sunny day, but before midsummer. They get up close to 9,000 feet and fall over on ice. Many shady areas have ice for weeks, if not more than a month after the last snow.

Not worth chancing.

Thanks for the advice and I will take it! I'll probably just head down to Pinnacles National Park then. Should be a fun enough ride  :)

Yeah, that is a nice place to visit. I have been there a few times, but not for years.

Another interesting less known place to ride through with great scenery is a ride thru Fort Hunter Liggett. Even been there?  But there is a creek that you must ride through that could be extra deep this year. May not even be possible. But there could be a bridge over it by now, I have not been there for many years.
