Of course we have heard it all before and are still waiting for these new technologies to hit the commercial market. Just watched it and I can only be hopeful I can make my current and soon to come Energicas last 10+ years with the mileage I put on them. Then we will probably have a bunch of new developments. For now, we'll see headlines every other week for new developments in batteries which is really awesome how much focus there is on it.

I quit listening to EV battery vaporware years ago. I only care when they are on the market, which never comes to ~99.9% of the ones we hear about.

Often the difference between "coming soon" and "has arrived" is many years. Just take a look at Plugshare where they say chargers are "coming soon". Most of those have been "coming soon" for many years.


EV battery vaporware is even worse than that! Most never make it at all.

I agree. And I think the reason that these new battery technologies never seem to arrive is that there is a big hill to climb between the lab and mass production. That, plus the fact that the commercial EV industry has a lot of investment in current Li battery design technology and really doesn't want to invest in new stuff unless they are forced to do so by stiff competition or government regulations. I just don't see much of a change in commercial mass-produced battery tech for at least the next ten years - unless it can be done without needing much investment in new infrastructure. 

And speaking of new commercial battery plans: I heard a radio news report about two weeks ago that GM was planning on constructing a battery manufacturing plant that would build old-tech LiFePo4 batteries for use in their low-price cars. They say that doing so would reduce the cost of the battery pack significantly, which would lower the price of their future entry-level EV vehicles. So GM apparently thinks it is better going backward instead of into the future - at least when it comes to selling cars in volume.

  I was reading the articke and got wondering if battery and cell might be getting confused.  I took a Makita 18volt 6 amp hour battery (which is lighter than the 5.0 ah one from a few years ago) and came out with 185 watt hours per kg.  Pretty close to the 200 wh/kg the article claims.  Now the Makita battery has vents for cooling air on the charger gets hot if used hard.  Have to wonder how much cooling aparatus needs be in a battery with  675 Wh/kg with a lithium-air variant.

I think the safety is a very big part of it. The easy part is to make a great EV battery. Seems to me the difficult part is to make sure none of them blow up as they charge fast. Look at all the problems GM had with their EV batteries even after they hit the market. And even a couple of them blowing up during or just after a home charge.

I am sorry but I can't and won't trust anything from GM anymore.
THey are 'too big to fail'
which means in laymans terms.  too big to give a shit.

They will NEVER be held accountable for their mistakes or outright incompetence.  Every time they lose billions, the govt just writes them another check to 'bail them out'.

Their ultium battery has been a boondoggle from the beginning and there is no real innovation coming from them to be honest that is something actually NEW, (read not stolen from someone elses idea).   Look at the buggy software their Silverado's have, STILL have even after years of people complaining about it, yet it's still there, yet it still is not and probably won't EVER be fixed.  their fix will be for you to buy a new truck, which is outrageously priced, because you are paying a bunch of union slugs to do as little work as possible for as much overtime as they can get to do as little as possible.  Then they wonder why they lose billions.  Just like the post office.  But as long as unca sammies suga check comes in every few years, the plantation is fed and nobody cares.

When the incentive to do better is no longer there, then better won't happen.  They have no incentive, because when they do poor, they get bailed out. again and again and again.

Just my 2 watts.  I was a huge GM fan, always been but after decades of disgust finally pulled my head out of my ass and acknowledged what has been staring me in the face all these years.

Waiting to see if Rivian finally gets their act together and where they are a year or so from now.  and NO I will NOT give you 1000 dollars to sit on for 2 years on the hopes a truck might show up for me in a year or so.
