California DMV Registration Costs For My ZERO
« on: January 30, 2023, 10:37:22 PM »

I only recently noticed that the registration cost for my 2020 ZERO SR/S was disproportionately higher than my new 2022 BMW R1250RT. The registration fee for the ZERO was $267 while the same fee for the BMW was $159. The BMW's final out the door cost in March of 2022 was higher than the ZERO. The ZERO was purchased in March of 2020. Is the CA DMV applying a different formula for electric vehicles to compensate for the loss of fuel tax revenue? I would understand if that is the case but I was not aware that they are doing this.

The state legislature passed a law a few years ago that would add $100 to the registration cost of every EV purchased after a certain date. It might have been 2020. But I don't know if it applied to electric motorcycles.

I just checked the CA DMV registration fee for my 2018 Zero S for which I paid $18,000 in November 2017. The total fee last November was $233.

My 2016 BMW R1200RS's registration fee, which cost the same as my Zero in June 2015, was $208 last year.  It sounds to me like you got a real deal on your BMW RT. It should have been much more than that.   ???

Richard, the cost I quoted was registration fee only. I did not include license fee or any other additional fees which apply to the total due.

The registration fee for both bikes was $154 (up from $149 last year). The license fee (which may be an income tax deduction) is what changes every year and is based upon the original price of the vehicle and how old it is. I think the license fee amounts to a tax on the vehicle and drops 10% each year after the original purchase.

I was quoting the total DMV fee because that is all I care about.

BTW, all of my vehicle registration renewal notices include a "county/district fee of $20). What that goes for I have no idea. Another fee, which fortunately is $0 so far, is described as an "owner/ responsibility fee". That is another fee that is a mystery to me.

For once New York looks very good.  After the initial title/tax/registration fee, the annual renewal fee for all motorcycles is $17.50.

It is tough to beat California when it comes to taxes and fees.  :(
