Please help broaden my perspective.

From my view, many, but not all, Zero riders ride it like they stole it and enjoy leaving others in their dust when pulling away from stoplights.

 By comparison, Tesla's I see look like they're driven with the intensity of a Nissan Versa.

I know there are several here that own both.   Am I experiencing some kind of observation bias or is there a shred of validity in what I'm observing?  If so, why?

I own both.


I would say most people drive cars like cars and motorcycles like motorcycles even when they own both.


But the term "most people" usually means it doesn't include me. I ride like I drive--much like a little old lady. I ride slow compared to most others. I tend to stay around or even a bit below speed limits, regardless of if on a bike or in a car.


BTW, the days that motorcycles are faster than cars are over. There are street legal ICE and EV cars that can do 0-60 in less than 2.5 seconds these days.

On average a bike is going to accelerate faster than a car, and the type of people to ride a bike are more likely to want to go fast. If I had a car I'd use it when I want to be comfortable which would also mean not flooring it at every opportunity, and I'd be more concerned about preserving the tyres. I ride a bike because I want to be quicker, whether it's to get somewhere or just for fun, and the further I can get from other vehicles on the road the better.

Observation bias. Most Zero riders I've come across are timid and ride it like a Rascal Scooter.

I notice it too. 99% of Teslas are so slow off the line. But 99% of everyone is slow off the line.

Re: observation bias... yep, only people who are quick off the line even think about this. My FX and Bolt EV are quick.

If I'm in the pole position, I am always full throttle to the speed limit unless I have passengers. I do this for 2 reasons:

1. To show the gas chuggers that silence is the new sound of speed
2. To respectfully get the hell out of anyone else's way if they want to go fast too

i see a ton of Teslas in the county of San Mateo, south of San Francisco. I have yet to see one going fast. They may have lots of horsepower and performance, but their owners drive them like a Leaf. Most of the fast jerks seem to be driving ICE pickup trucks. There are a lot of fast sports cars around too, but few of them drive like jerks, likely because they are so expensive to repair. And BTW, my observation is that electric motorcycles are still as scarce as hen's teeth.

I see them every day here in Reno as well. I wonder how many we would see if Tesla could keep up with the demand.

I heard on the news today that Tesla says that they will miss their production goals for this quarter. I assume that means that they can't meet the market demand due to manufacturing difficulties.

I own a ModelY Performance, a Chevy Bolt, as well as my Energica Ribelle. My Bolt is my only nod to practicality since it acts as the daily driver for my wife and I. I switched to electric not for the environment but for the ease with which you can access their performance.

Like Ashveratu, if I’m alone in my Model Y or on my Ribelle and I have the hole shot, I floor it nearly every time. The sensation of EV acceleration never gets old and I too enjoy taking the occasional V8 based muscle car off the line.

I'd agree it's just broadly a bike vs car thing. I enjoy the acceleration of my Zero and also my wife's Tesla Model 3. My wife however is not into bikes and drives the Tesla fairly sensibly - in fact if I floor it when she's in the passenger seat she feels physically sick from the acceleration - and this is when done sensibly in a straight line on a clear dry road.

I enjoy the acceleration of my Model 3 Performance as often as I can, my wallet doesn't enjoy this since I'm spending roughly $400 on tires each year, and that's after warranty claims for early wear.

I've got an SR/F and a Ioniq 5 AWD SEL.  I tend to push off the line faster on the SR/F even though the Ioniq 5 can accelerate pretty quickly.  I'm more in relaxation mode in the car, and much more aggressive on the bike.  Other than a few test launches in the car in sport mode (impressive acceleration), I normally keep it in normal mode.  Even though I am much less aggressive in the car, and in normal mode most of the time, I tend to see others disappear quickly in the rear view mirror, so I guess I am still moving fairly quickly off the line, it just does not feel like it.

Couldn't care less about going fast in my wife's Model S. Was fun the first couple of times but the Tesla's acceleration is clinically boring to me.

I do accelerate pretty hard in my ICE pickup truck tho.

I have a '22 3, '21 Y and '22 S. I have bunch of ICE bikes and a HD LiveWire. With the Teslas, I tend to not get on it hard from a stop. I roll off the line and then get on it.

I have found nailing off the line shreds tires very quickly. Tires on the S are staggered sizes so they cut the treadwear warranty in half. I spend more on tires than I do on charging by a long shot. Rolling into the throttle a bit doesn't slow them down much 0-60 but has really reduced my tire wear by a lot.

The LiveWire launches pretty hard and is a great point and shoot bike on the street. It basically launches perfectly every time. Most of the time with it I also just roll off the line and then hard on it. It will still easily decimate traffic at a light. I think in a lot of ways it is like most Teslas in that after a great launch, it starts to die off a bit over 70-80 mph. The refreshed S is the exception to that. It just keeps pulling hard on up into triple digit speeds.

Basically I drive/ride them all the same way. The exception is when I am towing with the Y. It is still pretty quick even with a 3k load. Another exception is if the missus is in the car. They all launch hard enough she'll get nauseous after a few hits so I just put them in chill mode when she is in the car. If I am in the car with our kid, they are a little adrenalin junkie in training. As soon as mom is gone they want me to put the S in launch mode. So we have some fun runs up to whatever the local speed limit is.
