I don't know why they couldn't do that in the U.S.  There are plenty of old gas stations that have been closed over the past 20 years, apparently due to the cost of meeting pollution and emission regulations and also perhaps due to the lack of sufficient activity.  But if it has been done here I sure haven't heard about it.

Coincidentally, a Shell gas station three miles from me along the coast highway is in the process of being slowly rebuilt, the construction of which has lasted for the past 6 months. Personally, I never saw anything about the old station that looked like it needed to be torn down and completely reconstructed. The only difference that I can see about the new one is that the new convenience store is only half the size of the old one.  Right now they look to be about a month away from opening up and even have a "help wanted" sign attached to the construction fence surrounding the property. The new gas pumps, which look exactly like the old gas pumps, have been installed and there is not a charging station in sight.

Years ago the UK said by like 2025 any place that sold gas would have to have a charging station.
Electric just makes so much sense for the UK.  I doubt they have any or few oil refineries, while they will be able to power the whole island with Scotland's wind soon.

Maryland House Bill 835 proposes to establish requirements for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations as a condition of approval for the construction of new retail gas stations in Maryland.

The bill, as introduced by lead sponsor Delegate Sheila Ruth of Baltimore County, would require at least one Level 2 charging station for each gasoline pump.

On or after October 1, 2022, a person constructing a retail service station that is projected to sell more than 1,000,000 gallons of gasoline per year shall install one electric vehicle charging station capable of providing at least Level 2 charging for each gasoline dispensing pump operated by the retail service station.

And we all know everyone loves to spend hours at a gas station charging their EV! A well intentioned bill that will be poorly executed.

Perhaps not enough EVs in the USA to make a profit on charging. It's kinda rare to see a charge station  in use here in NV as it is. Most common in use are the free ones here. In casino parking lots. 


Number of EVs in Europe: Close to six million.


Number of EVs in USA:    2.3 Million and one million of those are there in CA, especially where the property is too expensive to put in EV charge stations.


China:8 Million EVs.

Another gas station charged me $5 to use their 120v exterior wall outlet for 45 minutes. That money went right into the attendant's pocket. The way I see it, gas stations, many of which are privately owned in the U.S., are understandably threatened by the proliferation of electric vehicles.

But the larger companies like Sheetz and Wawa do get it. Because the real money isn't made at the pumps but inside. Not uncommon for Tesla Superchargers to be located in a Sheetz (at least on the east coast) or in a Wawa. Electrify America also has chargers in some Sheetz stations. But for the small Mom and Pop type stations it will be tough to survive EVs.

But there are countless gas stations that have EV charge stations in CA. Mostly Chevron and Shell. Several over HWY 80 in the mountains, and another in Bridgeport, CA that I can think of right now. There are many others.


But you did say a few years ago. I think they felt a bigger threat then than now. Perhaps now they realize there is no way possible to fight off the new EVs that are coming.


Perhaps with some gas stations it is:


"Can't beat them--join them."

You certainly get around a lot more than I do, Don. I have yet to see a gas station with charging facilities on site. But then I never go to a gas station located along a major freeway as they tend to have the highest gas prices in the area.

Then take a trip to Millbrae to here.

And you will see the DC fast chargers there at the Chevron Gas station. Not on a freeway.


I wish more gas stations would also have a J-1772, but most do not (but a few gas stations have both). That would be useful for our Zeros.

Eek! Right across from a Quick Quack Car Wash.    I haven't ridden on Millbrae Avenue in years. Maybe I should check it out sometime. I wonder if Quick Quack washes motorcycles?

According to an email I just received, it looks like Shell just bought out GreenLots charging here in the USA. I wonder if all Shell gas stations will soon have charge stations.

Greenlots charging  is fairly common in rip-off tourist  areas such as in Truckee, CA. I have used them a few times.
