Today, I took a ride on my 1971 BMW to GreenVille, CA to look at the fire damage.

How did the high school make out?
A dozen or so years ago I went on an organized Century (100 miles) bicycle ride with my buddy that started & finished at the school. 

Interesting (or sickening) how the point of origin was so near to that of the Paradise Fire

Last photo, this is of a new building in GreenVille, CA, built after the fire was out.


On the front it says "Dixie Fire Attorneys".


Lots of fire related workers there. That and a few people like me to take a look and a few just driving through now that the roads are open in the area. Most of the people are workers, all related to the fire damage.


BTW, the restaurant I used to stop at for lunch was just behind the Main Street sign, on the RIGHT side of the road. Nothing is left. The left side shows another restaurant, part of it is still standing, but I don't recall ever eating in that one.


This time, I had to find something to eat in Quincy, CA.  No businesses at all survived in Greenville.


Damage was even worse than I expected. Burnt cars all over the town and such.

Nothing left of it or anything else in GreenVille. I don't recall where the high school was located, but if it were in GreenVille, it no longer exists.


NOTHING survived. Most buildings are a few inches of burn wood and such.  Everything still standing to a small degree was in my photos.


GreenVille is now BurntVille.

Isn't it strange how a fire like that can completely burn most areas but here and there some small area survived the devastation. Thanks for the photos. I have ridden through Greenville many times and it is truly sad to see the destruction of the town.

In a somewhat related item: as I was typing this response I heard on the radio news that in some fire-prone areas of California power has been shut down as much as 30 times a week due to the sensitivity of new automatic shut down devices placed on PG&E's equipment that are designed to automatically shut down power in the local area when conditions (winds?) exist that might result their equipment causing a fire. Once the power has been cut, PG&E crews have to inspect the entire local electrical grid for problems before manually resetting the automatic equipment and turning the power back on, which takes hours to do. This item has been getting a lot of press lately and PG&E does not seem inclined to lessen the sensitivity of their equipment until the winter rains arrive, leaving local small businesses like restaurants that have to run backup generators during the power shut offs, screaming bloody murder on the news.  An electrical system like that is not going to advance the popularity of electric vehicles, BTW. There needs to be a better solution to the problem.

There is now no need for generators in GreenVille, as nothing is left standing.


Perhaps that new "Dixie Fire Attorney" building needs power, but nothing else there does.


And Greenville won't have such needs for a while.

The new equipment is basically an arc-fault breaker writ large.

And yeah, we've gone most of a week of days with 8-12 hour power drops.  Very annoying.  My batteries can run our network that long, tho.

Speaking of California wild fires here is the latest from the Fawn Fire: The Fawn Fire is a very destructive fire that started a couple of weeks ago called located in Northern California, just north of Redding. So far it has burned over 8,537 acres, 41 homes and 90 other structures. It is still active and is currently 35% contained.

The woman, Alexandra Souverneva, who started the fire is a 30-year-old graduate of the California Institute of Technology. While there she obtained two chemistry degrees and at one time worked in medicinal chemistry as a research associate at the biotech companies Gilead Sciences in Foster City and Nanosyn in Santa Clara, California. In her LinkedIn profile she describes herself as a "shaman" and is a registered member of the Green Party.

Here is the punchline: This morning the news reported that she claims to have started the fire while boiling a pot of bear urine. She told investigators that she was hiking in the forest and became thirsty. She saw a large pool of liquid, which she assumed was bear urine. She decided to collect it and then boil it so that it would be safe to drink. During the boiling process (the report did not say what she was using as a pot to boil the urine) her fire got out of control and quickly started the Fawn Fire. If convicted of starting the fire she faces up to 9 years in state prison.

I'm not even going to touch the bear urine story, that just makes her sound nuts.  That's not drinkable boiled or not.
