Don the recall was for 2017-19 bolts.  The problem is in the mechanical construction of the cells themselves.  The factory machines were off the specs a bit and QC didn't catch it.
If anyone wants to learn more about it the YT channel Transport Evolved goes into it in great detail since they own 2 of them.

GM revised the earlier 2017-2019 recall to now include every Bolt ever made. That is what the news article that I posted said. GM is going to take a $1 billion hit due to this battery pack recall. But at least they are not leaving their customers out to dry and eventually they will all receive new batteries that will hopefully be manufactured with care and will likely give their owners long and satisfactory service.  :)

The newer ones have American made batteries not the ones from LG chem.
Feel free to contact GM for all details but I don't think the article is correct unless they are giving a feel good once over of newer cars to make people feel better.

They are replacing the old batteries with the Ultium batteries that the new cars already have.

As for who pays.  Why would LG Chem get off when they made the bad batteries in the first place.  We'll see, maybe 50/50.

This recall includes all Bolts, even for the ones  that already had the recall work done as that fix didn't fix anything.  This  includes every Bolt ever made including my 2022. I was most likely the very last person in the USA to buy a Bolt. They can no longer sell them until the recall work is completed and so far NONE have been. The morning after I purchased my Bolt, the recall was announced for the very first time. And it was just about closing time when I left the Chevy dealer the day before in my new 2022 shinny red Bolt.

FWIW, I am not sorry at all that I purchased it. As long as it doesn't catch fire . . . .

I am undecided which car I like best between my 2022 Bolt  and my 2018 Tesla M3. Each have their pluses and minuses over the other.

The very next morning after I purchased my 2022 Bolt, I got a message on my Bolt screen that my  2022 Bolt is being recalled.

See here.

"GM HAS ANNOUNCED that it is recalling every Chevrolet Bolt made to date, including new electric utility vehicle models, over concerns that a manufacturing defect in the cars' LG-made batteries could cause a fire."

Looks like all the Bolt batteries are "LG-made"

Mmm lawyers.

If they don't trust the new batteries then I guess it's all buy backs.

A 2020 Bolt had a mysterious fire last month, so that's why they extended it.

It shouldn't be a case of which one is better. To me, two different cars for two different purposes. Other than both being BEVs, IMHO, they serve two different purposes. For me, my Bolt is my around town driver and commuter. My Model Y is my road tripping EV or when I need to carry more stuff than the Bolt can.

I like them both and like you said, they both have their good and bad points, but again, I feel like trying to directly compare them isn't being fair to either one.

I no longer have my 2020 Bolt, but the person who has it told me that They were only replacing certain parts, not entire battery. Will see what happens.
I now have a Mustang Mach E. Made in Mexico using SK Innovations Battery. They were partnered with LG for a while, but, had a falling out, lawsuits resulted.
SKI can no longer accept NEW battery contracts in U.S., but, able to continue with present contracts. When I first discovered that I was not going to get the
LG Chem battery, I was not happy. Feeling better now. Hyundai and Kia are sister companies, but, SKI does batteries for Kia and LG Chem for Hyundai.
All Electric Konas have been recalled, but, none of the Kias.
So few wins these days, take them where we can get them.

Yeah, they are difficult to compare for many reasons. Is your Bolt also a hatchback?  Mine has plenty of room for people or stuff, but NOT both. I always keep the back seats down to carry stuff, because I will probably never need the back seat for people.

But I cannot say I use mine for different purposes. Just different locations. They both get me between Auburn and Reno as well as any other place  just fine.  And I am now back in Auburn.

Smokey all the way now from Reno to past Auburn.

Yep, my 2020 is a hatchback. All 2020 and earlier Bolts are the same layout...4 door hatchbacks. Only the new 2022 (2021?) models are split between the original EV layout and the newer, larger EUV layout.

And yes, the smoke even out here by me has been horrible. I have an outdoor cat I feed twice a day and I've been having to take allergy meds just to do that (I sit outside with her while she eats so I can bring her food bowl in immediately...damn racoons!).

And by 'larger' they mean like, four inches.  Not very much!  It matters in range and carrying capability, but the difference is very slight.  Less than the difference between a 3 and Y.

I got an email form Wild West Chevy in Yerington just minutes ago.

They want to pick up my Bolt here at 0930 hrs in the morning, drive it back to Yerington, do the recall and drive it back in the same afternoon.

That surprises me. I didn't even know they were ready to do the recalls and I am surprised they can change a battery pack in it so quickly.

That falls back in line with what I had heard earlier.  They will do a once over on your car not expecting anything to be wrong.
The known problems are with the 2017-19s those will most likely get the new American made battery packs that are in your car.

GM is also trying to not replace anything it doesn't have to.
