I know from Twitter (an interesting place to follow Tesla) that many many bolts have been called to dealerships for some update or fix?
There had been a few fires while charging, so, until it's fixed, people were advised to not charge to 100% and avoid direct sunligth... (last one was a joke)
I would make sure that recall was already done so you didn't have to bother with it.

We don't have the bolt in EU so I don't know the car at all. Maybe the EU version was the Opel Ampera which have never been introduced in Denmark.

I read somewhere recently that GM was replacing the entire battery pack in the early models of Bolts. Something about using an Asian-brand pack that wasn't working out for them - or their customers, who didn't want to be barbecued along with their vehicles. 

It appears that for some manufacturers transitioning to all-electric power is not proving to be an easy or inexpensive road to travel.

For sure. I can see why Japan's auto makers have been buying time with their PHEVs, best to let the tech mature before making a big entrance.

I would look for a used 2020 if any can be found. The first year GM switched to the 66kw battery instead of the 60kw battery used in the 2017-2019 models. I would say, the new 2022 Bolt EU as well but you would need to buy that one brand new.

I agree with the LEAF if it's that cheap!

One of the downsides of the leaf is that the battery is aircooled. But since you probably won't be doing long roadtrips in it and do several fastcharges in a row it won't matter. You have the Model 3 for that

Even many 4WD vehicles have been stuck overnight in snow here in Reno in past years. We can get really deep snow here once in a while where all traffic is stuck on some roads. And no chance for a tow truck to make it either.

Fortunately, that doesn't happen often and those are good  days to stay home--and pray the electricity doesn't go out.

But if possible, I will be at my Auburn house before those types of storms get here.

This happened even before I was born, but on January 17, 1916, 22.5-inches of snow fell over Reno in a time period of just 12 hours and 40 minutes.

That can give an idea how bad it can get here. Fortunately, that's not very often. But then cars will not get far,  even if 4WD, at a lot less snow than that.

Sometime during the late 1970's or early 1980's it hit 19 degrees F at my home in Pacifica for three days in a row. I hope that never happens again, and with global warming I bet it never will. The three jade plants in my front yard planter froze solid and when it finally warmed up, they collapsed and looked like they had been run over by a steam roller.  Poor things.

Yeah, my junky old Saturn is FWD and does fine in the snow. But the engine being right above the front wheels help a lot too.


Where is the most weight in the FWD EVs?


Sometimes snow comes here  with little warning. The day I purchased my Moto Guzzi Stelvio here in Reno it looked like a fairly  nice day. No snow when I left the shop. In the six miles back it was HEAVEY snow. It was a miracle that I didn't dump the brand new bike. I saw a few car accidents  caused by this snow on the way home.


When I got to this house, the snow was too deep to get the new bike into the garage! But I got a local buddy to help me with it and somehow finally two of us was able to walk it into the garage with the help of a snow shovel.


One of my scariest rides. For a motorcycle, the Moto Guzzi does great in the snow! At least it got me here safely!

Most EV's, heavy as they are, they will do at least as good in snow as a car with engine on top of FWD.

FWD tend to understeer and RWD tend to oversteer. I belive it's easier to "feel it coming" and control it with FWD.

When thinking of it... Doesn't the Leaf have the engine (and all parts) scooped quite high up the like a regular ICE? It doesn't have a frunk of any kind.

Actually weight in the middle and front wheel drive is rather poor for getting up hills those days snow is piling up faster than road salt can melt it.
On most roads this is not an issue, but i have experienced this being an issue with my '17 Ioniq EV, which otherwise is very safe during winter due to that weight distribution. Rear wheel drive is ofc more difficult and dangerous to drive (when traction control is off), but will get you further up hills if you have the skill.

Other than that the Ioniq EV from 2016-19 are the poor mans Tesla- in those years they were class leading in range per charging minute (2.5C charging), and very low drag. So if you pay for electricity, it is likely the cheapest option. Newer Ionic EVs charge slower but has a bigger battery. Leafs from 2017-19 does not have battery cooling/warming as the ioniq has (forced air).

If i were to buy a new EV now, i would look at something with rear wheel drive. The only thing that reallt bothers me with the ioniq is that ive had it in for a warranty repair on AC two times w/o any luck. But that happened to my previous car as well (civic hybrid)..
