An article in my newspaper today, published by the Associated Press, says that trillions of cicadas, called Brood X, are ready to emerge from their underground homes after hiding out for the past 17 years. This brood is said to be one of the largest and most noticeable ever seen. They will emerge within days, or a couple of weeks at most, and will be flying around in 15 states from Indiana to Georgia to New York. They are already coming out in mass numbers in Tennessee and North Carolina. Let the bug smashing and cleaning begin.   

I must say that I sure am glad that we don't have those suckers on the West Coast. They sound really nasty!

They're adorable!  We have cicadas down here in California, but they're not periodical.  Our impact hammer confuses them and they think it's a cicada calling.

Cicadas don't have mouths and don't eat.  They're just crunchy clean bugs.  Innocent!

They hurt when they run into you, tho.

We have both, the annual "Dog Day" cicadas that come out in late July.  Looking forward to the periodicals.  They have like, no self preservation instinct!  You can pick them right off the tree or the fence and they don't even attempt to fly away unless you toss them up into the air.  When there's a chorus of them it sounds like an invasion of flying saucers.  The annual cicadas sound more like really loud rattlesnakes.  They have a sense of self preservation and will try to fly away if you try to pick them up.

If you were a large stupid flying bug and had trillions of friends where would you want to visit first?  Why, New Jersey, of course.
