Anyone else here from New York State?
« on: April 24, 2021, 10:08:01 PM »

Just noticed something I found amusing.  In New York State, ALL motorcycle registrations expire at the end of April.  I was placing my new stickers on my motorcycles when I noticed something odd.  On the registration ID card, there is a field for "Fuel/Cyl".  For my K1200LT it has "G 4" which makes sense... it uses gasoline and has a four cylinder engine. For my XMAX it has "G 1" because it has a gas engine also, and is a single-cylinder.  HOWEVER, for my Zero, it ALSO lists "G 1".  Wonder how long it'll take NYS to update their system?  Any Tesla owners from NY here?  What does your registration card say?

You may want to get that changed.
When I first did mine (GA) they didn't have an electric option so it was gas and 1cc.  No big deal.
Then they made a $200 EV fee per year.

So I had them change it before any "problems".

If they start charging extra for electric vehicle registrations, why would I want to change it??

New Yorker here - don’t have my Energica yet but pretty sure my Tesla’s coded as an electric vehicle where it normally denotes the size of the engine.

Yes they had it set up right for cars in GA.  They didn't know electric motorcycles were a real thing.  Their step by step DMV registration program wouldn't let them past the CC section and 0 wasn't an option.

That sounds like the issue I had trying to get an insurance quote on the Zero SR back in 2015 on the Progressive website!  I finally ended up calling my agent and asking her, and it took her a day to get back to me.

Jaime,
I live in Western New York and my latest SR/S registration says E 0.  Your dealer may have made a mistake when they sent in the original registration paperwork.

VER-R-RY interesting.  I'm thinking it's more that back when I bought my bike, the system didn't recognize electric and now it does.  Guess I'll find out when Zero finally releases the SR/S in red...  ;)

Not from NY but my crummy state (IL) passed a law that EVs shall pay no more than $40 registration every 2 years I think. Great! Unfortunately there is no EV plate for motorcycles because there are like 4 in the state so it's $41.00 a year per bike. Still reasonable but motos can't take advantage.

I wonder how long that will last.  Some States are RAISING the registration rates for electric vehicles because, by not buying gasoline, they are not paying the gasoline taxes that go into maintaining the roads and other infrastructure.
