Scotts Valley is being evacuated
« on: August 21, 2020, 07:46:22 AM »

It was just announced by Santa Cruz County officials that the town of Scotts Valley, where Zero's factory and headquarters are located, is being evacuated due to an approaching fire which is currently out of control. All of the adjacent towns, such as Boulder Creek, Felton and Ben Lomond, in the surrounding area have already been evacuated. Zero's facilities are located in a built-up section of the town so maybe that area is defensible and can be saved by firefighters.

I was evacuated on Wednesday, late.  Cats and spouse are safe.

As of yesterday my town was spared, but slowly getting surrounded.  The word is they're trying to make their stand on Empire Grade but it keeps jumping them by miles and miles, hence the evacuations out to the freeway. And that the fire was starting to destroy buildings in downtown Boulder Creek and the fire lines

The bikes are safe, but we had to do some leap-frogging and cop dodging to get the last one.

I heard this morning that the fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains have increased to 75 square miles. Just about everything west of Highway 35 and south of Highway 92 is being threatened. It has also been reported that UC Santa Cruz, where my granddaughter goes to college, is also being evacuated.  :(

Last night it occurred to me that the Skylonda General store is not going to be very happy if the fire ever gets to the H2 fueling station located next to the store. That thing must be packed to the gills with hydrogen.  :o

Well, they have propane tanks which are a bigger threat, Richard. ^-^

The fire didn't progress very far forward last night but they don't expect to stop it.

And now there is another series of thunderstorms and strong winds being predicted to hit the Bay Area during Sunday afternoon and continuing through Tuesday.  :(

Most probably went to live with friends or relatives, some went to official shelters like the Half Moon Bay High School, people with animals or motor homes went to places like the Santa Cruz and San Mateo County fairgrounds and others are going to hotels and motels, many of which have lowered their prices for the evacuees.

I expect someday, there will be a major fire in Auburn.  Most insurance companies won't insure the area my Auburn house is in. Very deep in trees. In fact, the first time I looked at it, I told the realtor "this is a nice area --until it all burns down". More of a question of when, not if, kinda like the big earthquake that  will hit your area, that is already well overdue.

At least if I am there in Auburn and can make it to Reno, all will be fine. That was what I did last year then PG&E turned  off the AC power. But now I have my RV there, so I have a choice, but they have not turned off the power there yet this year.

BTW, it is VERY smokey here in Reno.  Big fire near Loyalton, CA and the wind is blowing this way. Here for Reno the weather report says air quality is "Very Unhealthy". Auburn is only "Unheathey".

I just looked out the window here and can see nothing at all. The smoke  here is that thick from CA fires. Here, I am on the very top of this hill and can usually see the casinos below, as well as Mt. Rose. Today, I cannot see either.

Best if I stay indoors today.

Yeah, as the smoke clears here at the fairgrounds, it gets quite sweltering.

The fairgrounds allows animals (there's so many horses here) which is why we're here.  Cats are tough to motel, even well-behaved ones like we have.

With all of the horses around, in about a week you should be seeing a lot of flies.  :(

Here is what things were looking like at the intersection of Highway 35 and 84 this morning, where Alice's Restaurant is located. Kind of smoky.  :(
But the smoke was even worse than this in spots along I-280.

And I thought the smoke  was bad here in Reno.
