One thing California does impressively well is tax the hell out of its citizens. Fees and taxes on top of fees and taxes. I think I just paid $700 to register my Chevy Colorado for year 2.

Seems quite high if more than a year or two old.

Just today, I got my CA DMV registration bill for my 2018 Tesla M3. It is only $558.00.

That doesn't sound like it included the new $100 EV tax.  Most of my motorcycles and my car, which are down to the minimum fee due to their ages, get hit with a fee of $148 a year. When I registered my 2-year old 2018 Zero S last November, the registration fee was $255. My 2016 BMW R1200RS that was recently registered clocked in at $225.

Registration fee= $250.00
License Fee      =   300.00
County fee       =       8.00

total due          =    $558.00

" FEES " are totally acceptable. Heaven forbid that we pay a " TAX ".
The Registration " FEE " in Nevada is $33. That is buried with all of the other " FEES "
that I pay on my vehicles. There are even some taxes in there.
My 2013 FX was $119, 2014 S ( 8.5 on registration ) $162. I had just registered my
2017 Volt when I traded it in on a 2020 Bolt. With $250 in CREDIT from the Volt, it
cost me $518 for Bolt Registration.
But, at least we don't have a State Income Tax.

That's some serious stretching they're doing there, Don.

"Unions lead to higher wages!  We can't have that!  We might have to tax those wages!  Which means higher wages!"
