Elon Musk wanted to keep the Tesla factory open, but Alameda County has ordered it closed as a "nonessential business".

I think this is a bad precedent.

We're going to have to do extended distancing for not just a couple weeks, but months.  A plant can't be shuttered for months.

Staying open  at full capacity could quickly turn into a disaster for Tesla. Only a matter of time before a worker gets COVID-19 which will quickly spread. If workers are afraid of their jobs they will hide it for as long as they can, spreading it even farther. Tesla will have a hard time hiring replacement workers if people feel they will get COVID-19 there. There is also the issue of supply chain disruption. What are the odds Tesla can even get everything they need to assemble cars?

If they had covid-19 they'd actually get sick days.

We're in big trouble if we can't protect our factories.

When you think of the size of the hole already punched in our economy, it's staggering. And it's going to get much worse.

For a tiny fraction of that amount of money, we could have gotten in front of this thing by manufacturing test kits by the bajillions, and hiring and training thousands of people to track down anyone who'd had contact with people who came down with the disease. That's how highly contagious diseases with no treatments (like Ebola) are handled, and it's very effective. Shutting down the economy is just a sledge-hammer approach that hurts everyone.

Ebola is also stopped with basic sanitation, so it's much easier to stop than this Coronavirus.

But still, workplaces can be managed and should be managed.  I think they're being irresponsible not letting the bookkeeping office staff out if their offices while stopping the workers who aren't shut in an office together.

My newspaper reported today that Tesla told the county health officials to shove it and are keeping the factory open - for now.  They told their employees to come to work unless they feel sick.  It will be interesting to see how the county responds to that response.

The latest news is that Tesla has agreed to temporarily shut their factory starting next Monday.

And another report said they were keeping only essential functions open.

Of course hindsight is a lot better. We are just buying time, which could help quite a bit for the medical stuff to catch up, so we do not make the same mistakes as Italy which now has more CV related deaths than China. And it's mainly because they have to decide who lives and who dies with their lack of medical equipment as an outbreak like that wasn't expected. They were not ready for it. We do not want to make the same mistake and be another Italy.

Being shut down for a month is better than what is now happening in Italy, but yeah, sooner would have been better. But what we are doing now, even if late,  is better than becoming another Italy, where they are having a serious problem now with what to do with all their dead. They have ran out of room for their dead.

So we have to choose between the best of two very large evils, while we may still have some time.  BTW, click on the link below about what is happening here tomorrow with almost no advance notice. But the panic was doing about the same anyway. The very first CV death in CA happened in this county.

Perhaps because of the fast changes the government is doing, such as in my last message, with advance notice of only hours. Look at the date of my link in the previous message in this thread.

The order is statewide now.  And more strict.

And this takes more than a month.  The more we succeeding in keeping people from getting sick, the loonger it takes.  Which is a horrible math.

It's hard to imagine how bad this is.
It's devastating in countries like US where so many people live from paycheck to paycheck. Have no cash reserves and no property to borrow against. It's even worse in poorer countries, with lower quality standard of living, and less healthcare.

I agree and I don't even want to think about what might be going on in countries like India.   

In the U.S. the problem is that every politician is jumping on the virus protection bandwagon and making announcements and proclamations every day. It really is confusing, especially the definition of what is considered an "essential" business and is allowed to remain open. One example that I get a kick out of is that gun shops in San Jose have been closed as not being "essential", while gun shops in Oregon are selling guns and ammunition as fast as possible.  Also, the Mayor of San Francisco has announced that bicycle shops can remain open as they are essential to traveling around the city, but I haven't heard the same announcement regarding motorcycle dealerships.

Yesterday's headlines were that they'd negotiated with the sheriff's department to reduce staffing to 25%.

And also that Tesla was going to switch some people over to making respirators.
