Electric Motorcycle News / Re: Land Moto District review

Munro Live did a video factory tour and mostly manufacturing related talk with them, released a couple days ago, so yes, appears to be almost completely manufactured in the US.  Once you spec it up with the large battery, on-board charger (L1 I'd guess at the add-in price), and a couple accessories it still ends up being nearly $10K USD, but ~30% less than the Can-Am origin which if I recall is heavier with less range.  Lower tech design, and less cost to manufacture I guess.

Yep, I literally described a license plate holder built into the rear of the seat, surrounded by an led brake light and turn signals, and a slim fender behind & below it in my original post with the idea.   So it needs an illumination led too. We're going in circles on an idea that was shown to be impossible due to regulations.  Time to move on...

Seems some were misunderstanding my idea.  That being that there would still be a plastic fender behind and below the combined light/license plate holder, to keep mud and such off the plate.  Without that 1kg or more plate holder and turn signals hanging off the end of the fender, it could be a much lighter & sleeker fender design  ...but regardless, it seems it's mandated to be behind the wheel so we'll continue seeing this awkward design for some time...

Advrider posted a ride review of the Pulse and Origin, including a blurb in the conclusion about the intended audience Can-Am is going for:

It kind of looks like an out of place wart on most bike designs, even the ones hanging off the swing arm like you mention, and also on the Origin and most dual sport/ADV bikes it's this big thing hanging off the end.  Hence the popularity of "tail tidy" kits in the aftermarket.

I imagine this is a leftover design element from the days of needing a largish incandescent bulb housing for the brake light, as well as designers wanting to taper the rear of the bike as much as possible behind the seat.  Since we now have super bright, ultra thin LED lights of wildly varying shapes available to work with, it's probably about time the plate moved up to the rear light area, with a light bar surrounding it, along with the signal lights.  Sure, the rear of the bike might not taper as tightly in design, but then only a light, thin fender would be needed to stop spray and could add to the design.  These Can-Am designs were inspired by a snow owl, well, most birds have long thin, tapering tail feathers (without a license plate hanging off the end;).  The rear light of the Pulse is actually about the same width already as the license plate mount.  Imagine if they'd designed the plate mount up there with a light bar above and below, and vertical orang signal lights either side.

The bikes appear to be on display at the Anaheim Convention center for "Club BRP 2025" for those in California that want a closer look.  Seems to be for the public, but maybe is for dealers

Here's the translated conclusion from the Italian article below.  Can-Am expects 50% of buyers to be first time purchasers (of Can-Am?  Of electric motorcycles?  of motorcycles generally?  either way, having them in their dealer network will get lots of recreational vehicle buyers looking at & test riding them I imagine.  Probably a much wider network than Zero has, and more varied clients than Harley show rooms perhaps?) :

Original in their approach to design and in the final result, the Can-Am men have focused on motorcycles with human performance, and there is a reason for that. According to their assessments, at least 50% of buyers will be first-time purchasers. The electricity market is currently struggling, but when it rebounds, they want to be ready with an appealing offer for every type of experience, not just for those who are already experts. For this reason, they tried to maintain lightness and reduced charging times, resulting in the choice of a battery pack that is not among the largest, perhaps disappointing those who expected a record capacity or at least one of the most spacious on the market. Their estimate of the kilometers traveled daily by commuters in America as well as in Europe supports their choice: In short, they didn't think about tourism but about daily use. Yet Pulse and Origin have various practical and "clever" solutions that could be particularly appreciated by those who are experienced and demanding. They certainly offer everyone agility, speed, and indeed some brilliant solutions, not to mention liquid cooling. This, however, has probably driven costs a bit higher... For our market, the list price is significant, but the relationship with the average earnings of an American worker is somewhat different. The technical foundation, in any case, seems to be very interesting, and we wouldn't be surprised if Rotax decided one day to put it on the market for other manufacturers (when asked, they neither confirmed nor excluded the possibility).

here's a very quick walk around of the battery & chassis ( heads up to lower your volume;), also if you click the link directly you can slow speed to .75 and pause it...  This also gives a good view of the rear shock with piggy back reservoir and adjustments.  In the German video I'd posted yesterday the presenter showed that you access the adjustment controls on the reservoir by removing the seat.

haven't found any BRP related immersive battery cooling or dielectric fluid related patents just yet, but they are hiring for a fair number of engineers, technicians, and designers for their "electric vehicle and propulsion development team"

also, their 2021 press release about investing $300M to electrify all their product lines:

It's being used in computer servers too

Edit, This HP vid isn't about immersion type cooling...

I believe the charger and inverter are already up at the top/tank area and upper sides, only the plug inlet is down low
See 1:30 here:

This isn't the video I'd seen (was maybe a trade show walk through on Munro live, Out of Spec, or maybe even Linus Tech Tips), but is the same concept, just more recent.

EDIT:  Maybe it was this Munro live Faraday Future video...

Similar here at 14 minutes in on a university design race bike.  16kWh, 400V

One of their teaser videos from a month or two ago shows cylindrical cells, and one might also explicitly say 2170's.  I recall seeing a video from a couple years ago of a prototype battery pack that had the cylindrical cells in a pack with liquid coolant running right through the pack instead of in channels or plates adjacent to the cells like most car manufactures are doing.  It wasn't Can-Am displaying this I don't think (at some trade/tech show I think) but it was about the size of a motorcycle pack, or maybe the presenter even said it was for electric motorcycles, can't recall.  Can-Am's animations of the cooling running through the pack look kind of like this.  They show digital blue-ish liquid kind of flowing through the pack and into the motor.

Was just thinking it could be a double wide battery pack version based on this design.  Presumably this current pack is made up of two columns of horizontally stacked 2170's, so ~140mm width of just battery, plus casing & connectors, etc, perhaps making this pack on it's own 20cm wide, or 25.  Or perhaps it's 3 columns wide & thus more like 25-28cm including casing etc. If they made a four column wide version maybe it would end up 45cm wide, which maybe isn't far off the width of a DSR or Experia pack width...   or a six column wide version. That's all I was thinking

At the 7:20 point of this new German language video they mention the press meeting with the CEO & management where they say they're also working on two more "secret" bikes for the future.  The press event was held in June on pre-production units.  Turn on cc then in settings turn on auto generated english.  Maybe they'll be bigger versions of these; ie. an SRS type non-naked street bike and DSRX/Experia type tourer with double the battery & NACS DC charging fully utilizing the liquid cooling.  Or maybe they'll be a moped and a big trike;)

But perhaps a stripped down off road dirt bike version of the Origin could be a good one for the future, which might get them more sales at lower prices/costs given fortnine's glowing take on the off-road riding experience with that swing arm...  take off most of the electronics, ABS, lights & fairings, put on a light weight seat & rear fender, dirt bike fork & high fender, smaller dirt bike size wheels & tires, and put the charger/inverter in an accessory stand like the Varg.

This article states the weight slightly higher and also mentions that the origin has tubeless tires:

"Pulse weighs 387 lbs (175.5 kg), Origin is 412 lbs (187 kg)"

also power numbers:

"Rotax-built liquid-cooled motor makes 47 horsepower, 53lb-ft/72Nm of torque and has reverse mode"

Can-Am claims zero-60 mph time is 3.8 seconds (4.2 for Origin)

The writer wishes for at least fork preload adjustability on the Origin.  Mentions it would pair well with f-150 lightning/Rivian (also Cybertruck/GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado EV) for base camp charging & day rides, which is kind of how I currently use my drz400 & honda Pilot (albeit at a fraction of the upfront cost & I can still do 300km+ rides with my 16l tank).  One of those trucks with a gosun rooftop charger and an Origin on a mototote hitch carrier could be interesting.
