understood, so its more of a hard code, and not software that can be easily changed.
at one time i think, it wasn't setec but one of the chinese companies offered bms's, that were very configurable, they came in like 6 pacs 8 and 12 packs on what theyd monitor upto with each board.  you could use it in lv mode, where it'd go upto like 5 volts, if you wanted to babysit each cell, or could go in higher volt mode up to like 20 volts if you wanted to babysit P arms of like 12 or 18 volts each or so.  it was kind of a cheat but you could ring hook these by having the last leg of one and the first leg of the next monitor the same cell, that way it acted like a bridge over to the next board.  it didn't look as much at WHAT the voltage was, that was your main software setting that did that, but made sure that all the cells were even.  the startup point was 50mv where it'd start moving power around.

i have a company now i go thru to get steel cases and bms so i can build my own 48v / 100 - 115 ah batteries from the rescues / refurbs i do.  they'll even sell me the i call it the nickel screen which is the buswork to hook them all up, you put the batteries down in the tray, lay it across the top and then go over it with the spot welder bam bam bam welding it all down.  they provided me a program that i can usb into the bms and change basic settings on it, for different voltage batteries depending on the specific chemistry.  it's nothing super snazzy, just a basic interface but it works.

the arduino comment, yes i understand you can not use that as a bms, but it is a controller that can issue commands to other devices with it, perhaps use it to control or program the bms in some way, if you could establish a communications link, you might be able to do something with it. ill admit, i am not an ardino / raspberry nerd, not overly familiar with them, but do know they are used for a lot of crazy stuff, so was thinking maybe you could use it to talk to, or issue some commands to this thing. look at voltages, issue commands to control current, turn on / off stuff, etc.  i wasn't saying you could, was asking, could you really?   ive seen them used in bms's for electric motorcycles that the college out here, their robot club built, granted it's running 48v not 348volt but still... i asked them, why didn't you just use a cots bms and was told, that's no fun, building one from scratch, now THAT's fun!!  i get it  ;D

yes you can swap in newer cells, but they'll be handled by the existing software if what you say is true.  given that, if the new cells are essentially the same chemistry just larger capacity, then this is not a problem at all.  just takes a tad longer to reach the setpoints,

if one can get into the bms, putting your own code in there should not be a problem, i mean, a raspberry pi or arduino could really do the same thing.  it's really just about voltages and amp control.  the rest pickles and fluff, for a pretty easier to operate human interface.  vbasic buttons to push, on a screen to change things.  if one was even semi proficient in programming they could probably whip up something in no time to do the same thing.  it's been eons since i had to actually do machine level raw code ground up programming, and i admit i never really dived into html, although its strikingly similar to so many other languages.  you might even be able to whip something up with html, json existing stuff.

im sure their bms is locked up but what if you could just format it, blow their code out and put yours in,.. how hard would that be if you could program?  or throw a new generic bms on it?

in larger vehicles yes they will work, they got room to put them in at, now a compact car or something you want to be ultra efficient, then no, the weight for the power kills that.  the cross country trucks, while theyd work fine there because theres gob tons of room to store them under the frame, subframe them etc etc, on the other hand, depending on the cargo, they might be a liability because they take away from cargo capacity.  they could work with the right cargo.  stuff that would fill a truck and not get close to the 80k limit, great, roll em out.

in that use case it makes a lot of sense.  its twice as big but who cares, they are shoving it inside a building to just sit on a parcel of land.  the size is not super important there.   for a larger vehicle, maybe a truck, it's not as important as theres a bit of room to shove shit and carry around.  when you get to smaller things like economy cars, or devices, then it gets critical, and just don't work.
if they really want to go old school,  go nickel iron. it's about indestructable, you boil it dry, just add new electrolyte up and down a few times and it's about as good as new again, and lasts decades if you do treat it right.

i love how they are taking things from 20 years ago and spinning it like, and this 'advanced technology'  oh stfu already lol.

how much do they want for a new board?

if you didn't cook any of the other components, heat tends to be the enemy of those led's and it don't take much at all, they are stupid sensitive if they overheat.  if you can get away with just replacing that one diode then that's great.

@electricwowheeler - whatever you end up doing, please be careful, and always, do a bit of your own research when you can,  try to verify or validate advice that is given to you, that it's good, don't blindly take 'advice' from people as gods rule or being safe, as some often speak of things they understand little about.  Try to understand not only what you are doing, but also preferably why you are doing it that way as well.  This greatly helps you truly learn from your projects but more importantly, keeps you from following bad advice and harming yourself or ending up with a btfu project.

goofing up and letting the magic smoke out of the wires, because you decided to hop on the clown car is one thing, but letting the magic out that keeps your heart beating, because you come across high voltage, is not acceptable, yet almost always, totally preventable.

parts are not cheap either,  why burn up 50 fuses at a buck or two a pop playing whack a mole, when you can get reliable data from one of many verifiable accurate engineering sources and build your project properly, the first time, with maybe only one or two minor adjustments.

technically anything over 50 volts is considered dangerous.  many will debate this, but, just, please, be careful when playing with electricity. it doesn't forget and doesn't cut you a break when you do wrong.

i think the slightly higher ratings on the newer batteries is from them getting / using better cells in them.
as tech put out better products, they adapted.

in theory, a battery charger should work on it's own, it looks at the battery, talks, then puts the power to it.
if the battery is too low to talk it wont charge.  or another way to look at it.  these chargers work from umm i want to say like 97 volts up to like 255 or something like that.(dont quote me but i think they'll reject the 277 wildleg input, which sucks).  meaning the lowest they can charge is.. well, in theory  97 volts.  they can boost voltage to match the pack but won't buck it. so if your pack is sitting a 5 volts, or 50 volts, its literally too low for them to do.

this wont work here, and it's a real shitty way to revive a dead pack but, can give you an idea...i have a 40kwhr pack that is 4x12 volt cells in series.,  the reason i got them is, they wired them wrong and the heaters are on the battery side of the bms, meaning when it gets cold out, they turn on the heaters, but if the battery volts drop to cutout, don't care, the bitch stays on until they are at zero volts..  anyways.  my 48 charger won't revive a battery, that is a well...non existent thing in lithium world. or supposed to be.  my 12 volt on the other hand, has a recover mode that will put power into anything, but do so current limited.   i hook it to one of the 12 volt batteries and fire it off,  it brings that one battery up and then, the balancer that is also on it, feeds that to the rest of the batteries in the system to bring them up as well.  it hops that 12 volts to each battery..which eventually restores the 48volt system to a voltage that allows me to then put the real charger back on it.

i have used something similar on other packs before,  charge up one leg,  wires and alligator clips work wonders, or pads with neodynium magnets on them, that way you can reach into a pack and clip the power where you need it, on the nickel bus.  charge a P arm and the bms will route it to the others if its a passive, then eventually wake up to charge the battery normally, or if no wake up, its a few days but spihon charge the thing up.  (note this wont work on the energica, it uses a stupid system to balance its batteries which is even fucking worse for the race bikes) but you could charge each arm or segment, individually until you hit them all... in an absolute worse case.

113F is not very hot at all.
what happens when the thing is sitting in a parking lot in florida, its black asphalt, its 3pm and the surface temp is 140 degrees on a sunny day with little wind and everything is sweltering.   its going to need to use power, in park, just to keep cool to operate.  now lets add a load to it, the radiant heat alone is going to kill it.

this is not going to be ready for mainstream.   and even that w/hr kg is not all that super.  some of the upper end lith cells can hit this benchmark.  what is solid state, they added a cap to it?     again, people love throwing the word solid state around yet there is no real hard line definition for it.    when you can show me an iso definition of what makes solid state then we'll be getting somewhere but until then, its a buzzword that people love to throw around that means, well, whatever they want it to.

sodium has less energy density, heavier, less power, but yes cheaper and easier to recycle.  but who wants a bike that weighs 30 lbs more and goes 30miles less?

right now the prevailing directions seem to be  make something different, or make something safer.  different is unexplored territory,  safer, you have a lot of help/known's but also a lot of competition.

supercaps, are about as simple as you can get.  mylar /carbon powder rolled up like one big tootsie roll, or would that be hoho :)   can series for higher voltage but have limitations there, and current limitations.

liquid batteries show a lot of promise too, the vanadium flow batteries look very interesting, but, like everything else, you see a few cinderella stories, half of which are begging for you to throw money at them and get in on the 'ground floor' bla bla... weve seen that before.

who knows, with quantum computers and such, maybe something will be discovered that is another disruptor, what they can do is amazing but unfortunately we know humanity, they won't  be used mainly for 'good'.

ive seen numerous e motorcycles ./ bikes that are using 48 volts and some of these things are just crazy insane what they can do. even with a simple pancake / manta motor onit, it's crazy the power they have.

if the thing was turned off, turning it on, you still have to enable it, bla bla, that complaint is petty, but quite predictable when someone has nothing else to explain away their inferiority :P  if that became a thing, they could easily put a switch circuit in there to put an extra second or two on or whatever an ice takes to kick off.  ::) to make it about the same as turning the key on an ice bike.  hell even the energica pressing the button it takes a second or two to go green. about the same as turning a key on an ice bike, so don't see the problem.  shrug.

love seeing things like this where people are making electric work.  the more we can get out there, tbe more support we will eventually have.
