They will charge on Tesla stations. Destintion stations are not a big deal to get started, but the fast chargers, even with the app it's buggy, even with a plug converter, tesla's or someone elses, it's buggy sometimes wanting to start. problem is SC's are looking for another tesla, the destination ones take any car, so the SC's the app won't recognize as being able to charge, even if you put it in, most times it won't even show on the map for your 'other vehicle'. A quick visit and email to tesla and they did someting so the station by me, knows me now and i can charge right up no problem. not sure if it works on every Tesla supercharger station now or if they just did mine, ill find out soon here.

In Europe they standardized the plugs so it's all CCS Mennekes. There is no need for adapters.

he may still need to contact them to get the charger to turn on for him. Obviously having a Tesla vehicle / account is probably going to be needed. Given he is travelling to many different country's it'd be interesting to see if he could get it to work everywhere, but I highly doubt it.

Marc tried a V3 (250kW) Supercharger: these don't work for Energica. The only ones that work are the V2 150kW types, with 2 cables (for old model S before Tesla adopted CCS). However, they come with a warning that they can brick the bike in some cases. You have to disconnect the charger manager to reset the bike. Also V2 chargers are not so common in countries where Tesla has expanded the last years. But apart from that, a non-Tesla can charge across Europe with the Tesla app. Tesla is generally a cheap alternative.

Honestly I've never used a supercharger because there's no need to bother, non-tesla chargers are all over the place and superchargers are rare.

Price-wise I found Tesla not very attractive here in Germany and where I am running around there is only 1 Tesla charging point - so no need to give my money to the lunatic.
Current best prices for me are 0.55 EUR/kWh with Aral Pulse and 0.56 EUR/kWh with EnBW, but only at their own chargers.
Otherwise it's around 0.80 EUR and can even rise to over 1 EUR on highly frequented Autobahn stations.

Last year in summer I accidentially met the owners Arne and his wife. Slurped a coffee while charging my Ribelle in Meschede when suddenly there where two Experias approaching.
They are very nice people! Motor van de Toekomst has some spare parts in store and they would be happy to answer your requests.

55-56 ct is a competitive price, If you have a Tesla car or subscribtion with non-Tesla, Tesla cheaper, but with the Energica I don't care that much about price tbh. I personally like Fastned with autocharge, just plug and charge.

in the us there are more tesla chargers than others, and they always are working, half the times the other chargers have issues or the bike don't want to talk to it to start the charge. The power company has chargers that work very well but some of the other brands are buggy and i don't see any sort of energica support coming anytime soon, if ever.
i get it, you don't personally like Tesla for whatever reasons, but if you are stranded, are you going to walk or pay for a tow, etc just because you don't like the guy or are you going to swallow your pride a little bit and charge on one of his stations?

Mark is stuck in France looking up fault codes to understand why his Experia won't run but a few feet once initiated...
He's brutally killing the weakest sister of the cell bunch...weak from day one once it left the factory...every pack has one weak cell (actually 2P cells)...and persistent attempts to invoke running is making it worse...actually, the Energica safeguards are working, so hopefully good margin exists.
Not sure this is the right bike for Mark as it needs to be balanced on AC and that in itself will take days of effort to bring back before hitting Africa. Using the engineering screen to quantify the unbalanced state is the right next thing to do and as such SB monitored until balance is achieved...all other cells will be discharged and charged repeatedly until the weak one comes back up...sucks to be Mark at this time.

get a timer and he can walk it up, you need an hourly restart to 'force ' it to do the rebalance, because otherwise the charge shuts down after an hour of idle sitting, but if you cycle power, it forces a reset/ recharge attempt, so walks it up slowly.
something like this will make that possible. this is not for regular use, only when your balance gets so bad it starts giving you errors.

Edit pwm, this is a perfect bike for him, the ac charger takes pretty much any voltage you find around the globe, just get a pigtail to mod the plug to whatever socket is where you are at. it will easily fit in one of his bags / boxes. plug it in at ANY hotel or outlet containing place he passes.

Correction...the weak cell will be discharged and charged repeatedly until the pack is balanced...not a big issue when the voltage disparity is low...sucks to be Mark at this time but maybe not...I hope he documents the battery SOC when balance begins...this is a critical number that determines overall battery pack health.

That's what they are trying to do here with the NACS (Tesla). I have already seen many CCS chargers with a Tesla (NACS) plug.

I don't know how you don't see this but it's LITERALLY THE OPPOSITE of what they did.

Well, my Zero was also nothing to write home about. That crap wouldn't even have got me to the Netherlands.
Long distance travelling with an Energica was proven already a long time ago. Go and google 'Ali Abdo Energica'.
A guy without deeper understanding how the bike (and charging infrastructure) works undertaking a long distance travel with a bike he obviously didn't test beforehand is not very smart.
But apparently smart doesn't get you clicks.

Would anyone really be surprised? Runs it down to zero, probably a dozen back to back dcfc sessions and then leaves it out in freezing weather. It’s almost as if a YouTuber deliberately manufactured a dramatic situation. Quelle surprise. Could have ac charged over any of the nights the series ran so far. Considering the multiple electrics he’s run, I am certain he’s aware of how to take advantage of overnight charging. Why can’t “content” creators be nice and genuine, like newzeroland.

He said it didn't balance after he left the garage but I'm assuming the Experia cuts out after an hour of balancing so it's just a matter of patience which he doesn't really have.
The problem with this bike likely isn't him. The short amount of time he's had it you couldn't screw it up that bad, the previous owner and the shop that sold it to him did not understand this machine, did not take proper care of it, and did not know how to prepare it for sale properly and he's doing it no favours.

there are hundreds of bikes running fine, just because you found a lemon, if that's true does not mean the software is defective. people in general are idiots, impatient ones at that. They don't want to take the 3 minutes to read a manual, or heavens forbid, leave it plugged in overnight to charge properly. Because the bike won't fufill their petulant demands of instant gratification, oh it's fucked up, the software is bad, it's not ready for main stream, bla bla.
I have a feeling most of this is drama for the page clicks for this one. I posted a detailed post how to walk it up and the part he can buy that will help him with it and it was deleted. I was very polite in it so that tells me that he is probably not interested in a fix but soap opera drama and those ever important page clicks.

Well said...if Mark had a grip on the iterative steps needed to get battery back to balance and subsequent periodic need to charge fully on AC, he would not be experiencing such woes. Having a weak cell top out @ 4.2V when SOC is 76% is not good...having a weak cell top out @ 4.2V when SOC is 96% is desired IMO to allow balance on single charge cycle...below 90% means AC charging is deficient and it will take several charge cycles to recover. Not sure about any detrimental effects to recharging immediately after a charge is complete...it is good practice to monitor when balance begins to gage progress on cell recovery hence need to burn off say 10% helps before a recharge cycle is initiated, but this requires patience. Changing out the pack is too drastic at this time but makes for good YouTube footage and likely the driver in Mark's head right now but it won't solve his issues...'cept what aaron alluded to...in Africa AC versus DC may be more plentiful which will save his journey.

if he gets a timer and restarts it every hour it will eventually walk itself back into specs, unless he totally destroyed that cell by pushing it so far into the basement like he was, but they are pretty sturdy.
get a cycle timer that does like an hour on, a minute off, that way it cuts power completely for a minute which totally terminates the charge session, when power comes back a minute later, the bike treats it like a brand new sesson and will 'top off' the batteries again, from whatever burned off in the last try. This forces it to keep charging because other wise the bike itself will terminate if the batts go an hour w/o a cycle, which can happen in the latter stages of a balance when you may have 10 cells at the top that need to be burned down to match the next lowboy, it only cn put so much power thru that bleed resistor, the more batteries sharing it, the slower their voltage drops to the 'recharge' point. By manually restarting it you are avoiding the bike timing out and just shutting down totally. This ONLY really needs to be done this way though if you severely neglected your batteries, otherwise a regular AC balance will work just fine.

I believe it was an SS9- from 2020 or so. Beautiful machine. Weighed a ton when I had to push it at the side of the road. The SR/F practically sold itself to me after that experience.

I own a 2020 SS9- and I like it a lot, but it has had a few issues. I have seen the SOC% display get stuck at a high false number and suddenly drop. But in thousands of miles, I have only seen it happen twice and both times it was obvious it was displaying an incorrect SOC% and didn't cause me any real problems. A full charge fixed it each time it happened.

I find a couple of Mark's comments perplexing and enlightening. He says (thinks) his battery is under warranty, has someone in Paris to help him, has a viable dealer in Germany(?) and is in direct contact with Energica who are going to replace his battery if necessary.
I know he had no support from Zero when he rode his SR/F for 50,000 km+ through Europe and Asia. He was not pleased. I wonder if he has a deal with the new Energica folks for this ride?

It wouldn't surprise me if this ride is being glamorized by Energica as a click bait to show the world how 'awesome' their customer care is bla bla, while the rest of us get nothing from them. Sounds like they are pulling a lightning here. Sell or fix one bike, be very loud about it, ring the church bell bring the entire town to see them fixing it, then try to run on that for the next year pretending they are doing just fine.
Where are they going to get this new battery at? They didn't have any laying around before, if so they should have taken care of the 3 people at least that i know of, that are having battery issues. Where are they going to put it together at? Not to sound sour but, why take care of this person with a new problem, besides for the high profile page clicks of course, before the hundreds of other people who've been patiently waiting for any word on when they can start getting their bikes fixed. I hope he figures it out, or at least balances the thing like he's been told a dozen times to do so already, but that might cut down on the drama and cost him half a cent per page view.
What's so sad about all of this is, just following the instruction manual and some simple maintenance could have saved a ton of grief, and then you have the 80 iq mouth breathers, who the moment something doesn't work the way they want it to, oh the program is shit, it's not ready for the road yet. So i guess if I am too ignorant and impatient to spend 5 minutes putting oil in my ice car and the engine eventually seizes, that means the engine was shit and that brand is not ready for the road yet huh? ::) >:(
someone said he owned other electric bikes? well how does he NOT know about plugging into the friggin wall then?? Energica is one of the very few where you DON'T have to plug it in the wall to charge. Something seems ... staged a bit if you ask me.

He rode his Zero for close to two years through mud and streams across Asia. He knows how to keep one going and plug in anywhere he can find. I think in this instance he was too enamored with DCFC, plus he was riding hundreds of kilometers a day to get out of Europe and get to Africa. Then he will get back to plugging into AC for the next few years.
He also rode a Verge through Europe to their HQ. Interestingly - the wheel motor failed after the first few days and had to be replaced on the road.

I hope Marc can get on the Energica rhythm by doing an actual balance often enough. The start of the Experia in the new series isn't looking good though, where he's only charging fast to a % he needs instead of actually caring for the pack.

it's not designed to, it's designed to FAST CHARGE you so you can get back on the road and continue on your trip as quickly as possible.
It's designed to be FAST, not thorough. It will give a little balance, not a full one, that is an entire different process. To top them off properly you need to use a SLOW charge once a week or so when you are in for the night.
That's why they call it a Fast charger. RTFM it helps explain things a bit, hell do a google search it'll explain the chemistry and how those batteries work. Get in charge and get OUT, don't sit there diddling yourself for 4 hours while your battery conditions itself, if you want to do that, use the charging method that is designed for that. SLOW charge.
Why can't a surgeon use an axe to do brain surgery, because it's not designed for something that delicate.

No, not really dense at all, I'm just wondering what about the protocol and its abilities stops it from delivering just a couple of amps if asked, or whatever fairly small current is needed for balancing on the Energica. Because it strikes me that the Energica should never end up in this state if the only charging you have available is DCFC.

The speed of the charge. Balancing takes time. The more time, the better balancing.
IOW, DCFC does balance a little. But very little. But a 120 VAC level one charge would be a lot better as then there is a lot more time to balance.
If you want a real good balance, use the lowest power you can get aways with and be very patient.

You do NOT need to balance every charge. Your home charges should take care of it so you do not need to worry about it when on the road.

Obviously I know all this ... I want to know why DC charging can't also be slow when it needs to be. You know, when the bike's about to brick. Usability fail. This is why EVs aren't catching on as fast as they should be. This should be a no-brainer, and most importantly, it should fail-safe, not just keep charging your bike at 20kW until the battery's fucked.

DC charging (or charging control circuit in the charging station, not in the vehicle) can charge at lower power. The rating for DC station is max what it's capable off. It needs to communicate with the vehicle what are the safe charging parameters before it starts charging (current, type of battery, cut-off voltage, etc). The AC chargers (with the control circuit built into the charger in the vehicle) are specifically for that batterypack with those parameters hardcoded.
The BMS (also built into the vehicle) is in charge of balancing the cells. It depends on the BMS design if it can balance the pack when it's half charged. Usually there is no need. As long as all cells have some charge they don't "need" balancing. By design BMS (usually) only balances the cells when they are fully charged. It does not matter if there is imbalance when discharging. If one cell goes critically low, the BMS shuts off the whole pack, it does not discharge the other cells to match when that is not needed.

T.S. It can charge at lower rates but is not very good at it. it's designed to push sometimes hundreds of amps through the battery to get it back up and on the road, not to pump half an amp through it so it can balance for 3 hours. They don't do very well regulating small currents like that, and when the batteries are at their top end, voltage swings are very easily caused with just a few amps, enough to push the top battery into 'im done' stopping the charge, or worse over charge them.
By the nature of how a balance takes place, even on active balancing systems, it takes a while to shuffle the charge around or bleed off through the small bleed resistors, the fast charger would overwhelm the circuitry's ability to do it properly. An AC charger that can readily go down to an amp or two (which would potentially equate to fractions of an amp on the high side), does a much better job for that fine tuning charge.
DC FAST chargers were not built for fine balancing. They are built for speed. They don't want you sitting there for 2 hours, they want you in and out so the next guy can charge.
besides, here's another way to look at it.
for all you gas car users who smugly claim oh i gas up in 5 minutes and im back on the road. How would you like it if I was in front of you, filled my car but then decided, you know what, i need to wash it too. im parked, so might as well do it here at the pump!! I'll go inside grab a quick snack, a bucket of water then after i eat, ill come out and wash my car. Then proceed to spend the next 2 hours fiddling around with something i could easily and should do while i am at home, all while you are behind me, waiting for your 5 minute block of time to fill your car. THIS is about what using a fast charger to balance fully would be like.
how would you like it if i pulled up to the charger, charged my car, then let it set there an additional 3 hours so i could squeeze that last 2 percent out of it and fully balance it? You wouldn't mind sitting there waiting your turn while i balance would you? Of course you wouldn't, because the kids today are just soooo patient, they don't want everything now now NOW!!! they can wait until... whenever and will be happy about it!!
Many DC stations will also charge you for idle time too... this is so the entitled jackasses who think they CAN just park there, and go shopping, and fuck over everyone else needing power, are paying for that parking, because it costs the company money too in lost revenue.
DC fast charge is not designed to fine balance, and they don't want you there, sitting there, balancing for hours.

DC fast charging is designed for speed, but that doesn’t mean it’s not accurate. DC chargers don’t just blast “hundreds of amps” blindly into a pack. They follow the vehicle’s BMS commands down to very fine resolution. As the pack approaches full, the vehicle automatically tapers the current, often down to single digit amps, precisely because the BMS regulates it at the millisecond level. This is why many EVs finish their last few % at well below 10 kW on DC, not 250 kW.
EV charging isn’t a single sequential line. If one station out of eight is occupied, you don’t line up behind that one. You plug into another.

I'm aware of all of this too. I think my question boils down to, would you rather upset someone mildly by making them wait another 30 minutes for a charge (first come first served buddy, my SOC is none of anyone else's business) and not ruin your £20k motorcycle, or meekly throw your hands in the air and move on swiftly, to end up with a two wheeled brick a week later because you're so polite?
I mean if we're on the subject of fast, it's downright rude to be charging at a mere 20kW for an hour isn't it when the next guy could be drawing 350kW and be on his way in 15 minutes. So you see the flaw with that line of thinking.

The only way to fill a cell to capacity is to slow down the charge, the terminal voltage will drop proportionally so it matters significantly when SOC rises otherwise capacity falls short...balance starts when the first cell hits 4.2V and as was stated, this is a BMS function inclusive of dissipating the excess by discharging the cell(s) that have reached full capacity. DC charge stations exist to make money on the basis of energy delivery not time connected...leave the burden of balance to BMS it will select the correct charge rate which in our case is fixed at 4-amps when one charges by AC.

pwm, in the case of the energica, the discharge resistor is not very big. so at the beginning, when it is only discharging maybe a few cells, it can cycle this a few times, but after it goes on for a bit, lets say now you have 20 cells that are topped off, it can't dissipate them in the time allotted (which is about an hour) down low enough to trigger another charge/balance cycle so it shuts off the charge session, terminates it. in a badly unbalanced pack you may still have half your cells that are not up to par, but the cycle terminated. This is why having an external timer to physically cycle power going TO the bike on and off WILL work. See if you are in a charge session and power is cut to the bike, after, i want to say 15 or 20 seconds, it times out, shuts down the charge session. So this manual cycle, once power is re applied, forces a restart of the charge cycle again at whatever the batteries are currently at, until it hits peak again. Sometimes it can take a day or two, especially if you got cells that are 200 mv / half a volt out but this can and will walk up a badly unbalanced pack unless there is physical degradation that is preventing it from reaching there.

Hi Aaron, I understand what you are saying and functionally you're correct but typically there's a discrete discharge shunt (not necessarily a resistor but can be semiconductor) assigned to each BMS channel...in the Energica case each channel connects to (2) cells in parallel as best as I can tell from module images posted on a different thread in this forum.
Anyway, the charge / balance cycle time-out is somewhat of a mystery to me too and I'm guessing it's safety compliance for software to terminate orderly...like a watchdog requirement?

i think the timeout is in case it hangs or maybe locks up somewhere so it eventually terminates. i do know that occasionally a charge can get goofy on the shut down, something glitches software wise and it has to turn off basically throwing the knife to get it to shut down ,it's locked up.
i know some chargers remember stuff too and can throw and save their own faults, and need a p.o.o.r to get going again.
i just said resistor, it can be semi, a lot of balancers are ,but it's basically something to bleed / eat down power. Basically it's shave down the high , charge entire pack, shave down high ,charge whole pack, etc until they all finally fall into the proper range. Now you can see how when you get towards the end and you got 100 batteries trying to seep down thru a circuit that was designed to handle, what 10 watts, it's going to take some time. Too had they didn't use active but that's of course more expensive bla bla.
i dohave a pack but have not had time to bust into it really yet. been so busy with everything else going on, and milking my bum arm here etc. im hoping, probably around may when the track shuts down for a few months ill get to it then. worse case ill bypass some stuff and use it for solar storage along with the rest of the frankenwatt mobile.

In today's Mark Travels segment, Mark went skiing, the only Experia content was Mark's renewed awareness towards balancing pack thru AC charging and some sort of issue with flakey range estimate being displayed.
Wondering if other Energica riders are having same issue...this has never been a problem with my '21 Ribelle e.g. range estimates based on current ride mode are typically accurate @ 1.0-1.5% SOC / mile...I will get 100-miles worse case (typical highway mode does not exceed 70_mph_gps) versus 150-miles best case (typical city mode which is 35-40mph inclusive of some stop-n-go).

Every motorcycle manu on the planet should do themselves a favor and get rid of range estimates.
You tell people over and over how it works, it's not accurate since YOU are not consistent on how you ride, bla bla, but hey, it makes for great drama when they are click whooring for pootube pennies per hour from people watching the same crap play out for the 10001 time.
it's like these cheap 'reality shows' that are 'shot live' and it's episode 5 now and the cops still have not figured out that the moonshine pit is right behind their police station and once again just miss porksword and cleetus turning off into the punkin patch :o ::)
What they should call it is, based on the way you have been driving the past mile, if you keep it up, you got XX more miles left.
once people understand it for what it is, and quit pretending it's what they want it to be, it works just as intended. But the drama he can create with it should be good for at least another 100 page clicks and pearl clutches. Cha Ching $$$

Range estimate is important. The issue is, that Energica (as well as Zero) are very poor estimating it. Energica calculates range based on consumption of the last couple of km. If this is 2 km downhill you get a range of 500km. This does not make sense since there is no 500km downhill road on this planet. Same is true if you are 2km uphill and the range is calculated on a 200 wh/km range. Guess what: It gets downhill once you are at the top of the hill. I have done my own estimate reading data from OBD2. I take average consumption of the day as well as long term average in calculation and I find it very accurate. By no means rocket science.

There are various algorithms one could use ... but it does strike me that as a company that literally has all the actual data they could come up with an algorithm that makes more people happy more of the time ...

if you ride the same route every day, the same way, same speed, same conditions, then your range is highly predictable, if you do not follow a cookie cutter route then your range varies.
funny how you can fill up your gas car and it can say, you got 432 miles of range left on this tank of gas, yet nobody whines and cries when that doesn't match up by the mile. which it seldom does, but nobody seems to care.

I don’t know what it’s like in the US, but charging infrastructure isn’t exactly dense, so an electric bike does mean your spontaneous country rides must have an element of planning to ensure you don’t end up stuck somewhere. I rely on keeping the location of chargers in my head and eliminating them as the bikes range decreases.

Why can ABRP do that? Because you told the algorithm your route and it can factor in out uphill/downhill consumptions.
How should the bike know where you are going? Mister Mark and apparently a lot more people do no grasp this.
Consider a bit of range anxiety as part of the fun 8)
Once when I was travelling in the north (flat topography) I omitted thinking about the strong headwind I encountered.
Rolled up to the charger with only a few %SOC instead of a comfortable 20 only to find it out of order.
If I had used ABRP I could have seen the difference between the calculated SOC and the real number and could have acted accordingly. IDK if there is an APP available that is doing that.

If you are Mr Moneybags, ABRP has live directions, weather, traffic and guidance. If you set your SOC in the app when you start, it can track your ride and give you alerts when you get out of range of chargers.

in the us, chargers are denser around cities, sparse in the sticks. Elon is doing a fantastic job of getting his charging network built up so that there are no 'charge deserts', but your vehicle has to be able to use his network. Fortunately mine does and it's opened up to many others now as well.
in order to plot by terrain it'd have to know where you are, so add more gadgetry telemetry, $$$ to the cost of your bike. now lets throw in weather, now lets throw in live traffic feeds. waahhh my bike cost 6k more, waaahhh ::)
Traffic jams, accidents, construction delays and detours, oh its 99 degrees out let me hump that AC, there goes some kw's there in a car/truck.
how much does your fat ass weigh? that factors in too, what kind of wind drag are your arm flabs going to cause when they are flapping in the breeze at 70 mph, .vs. a racing posture? that eats power. speaking of temperature if it's 40 degrees out, that eats your battery capacity.
how old is your battery, when IS the last time you did a full swing calibration so the bms can see the actual capacity .vs. what it thinks its supposed to be?
it's not quite as easy as, oh they have all the data they just don't want to give it to us.,
when you go on an ice trip do you consistently run your fuel tank down until the needle is below the E and you can see space between them or do you fill up a bit sooner? Well my silverado says i have 420 miles until next fillup, albequirky is 412 miles away so I should be fine. C'mon honey load all 8 passengers up and lets get going!

I just logged my mileage and SoC for a bit when I got my bike new and came up with 115 miles from 100%, 93 miles from 80%, and 70 miles from 60% and usually I just use those as rules of thumb, going charger to charger and looking on a charger app to find the next one in whatever direction I'm going. I never use ABRP or whatever because it'll only ever give me boring routes and that's not why I ride.
