Another DC fast charging standard?
« on: February 27, 2023, 02:44:17 PM »

See here.

For Rivian drivers ONLY!

"Non Rivian vehicles will not activate at this station."

What is all this about?  A new DC fast charge standard as if we don't already have too many?

You uh.. missed this? They touted this for the last, I dunno, two years? This was their big ploy. Make a bunch of exclusionary charging stations but have high powered (7.2kW) AC J1772 stations open to the public. They've not hid this at all. Been living under a rock?

This whole,  it will charge MY brand vehicle only bullshit is just crushing the industry TBH.
ANY business that would single out or turn away potential customers, just because, well that sounds like fiduciary IRResponsibility to me and the CEO needs his ass slapped for that.

I mean think about it, ok so this guy owns a chevy, .. his credit cards spend just as well as the Rivian guys cards so why not take his money too?  As a stock owner in your company, Id actually EXPECT you to do just that, as the LAW states about corporations and making money.

The easier they make these stupid things to work, and the more they work with each other, the faster the acceptance of electric cars will come about.  Right now many normies will see the endless stories of charger woes and say fugeddaboudit!!  too complicated, Ill wait until they get their crap all in one sock.

Glad I have my own panels and don't need to play all these games for the most part with my Energica TBH.

I guess, because that was the first I heard of it and ran against it accidently. I don't know anything about the Rivian.  Can they still use J-1772 and CCS? Adapters  or what?

You consider 7.2 KW to be high power for a J-1772?  I consider the 70-amp (16,800 watts)  J-1772 at Lake Tahoe to be high power.

Yep, J1772 for AC and CCS for DC. A few folks at work have the pickup Rivian. I still haven't seen the SUV Rivian in the wild yet.

I have seen several of them parked at Alice's Restaurant in December and driven on Highway 1 in San Mateo County, sometimes in groups of three. Last month I saw one pulling a large cargo trailer that was large enough to carry another Rivian. So they are out there, at least around here.

Speaking of charging stations, AC or DC, an article in my newspaper today, written by David Caraccio and published by the Sacramento Bee, lists the states and metro areas with the most and least charging stations per resident. Vermont has the most at one charger per 703 residents, California follows with 881 residents per station. The Sacramento valley area has one station per 1,111 residents. The fewest chargers in a major metropolitan area is St. Louis, Missouri at one per 5,787 residents, while Mississippi has the least number of charger stations at one per 9,275 residents in the state.

I wonder if they count the broken ones. Here in NV, the only CCS fast charger in Fallon and the only one in Hawthorne has been broken for more than a year. Several others as well.

I could go more places two years ago than I can now on the same roads.

Ain't going anywhere today. I-80 in CA totally closed to all traffic, and it is snowing here in Reno too. Longest closure I have seen on I-80, from Applegate, CA to NV. Applegate is three miles east of Auburn.

And the big storm isn't even there yet on I-80. That comes tomorrow when they will get another foot of snow.

You know they don't count the broken charging facilities.  ::) No doubt they pulled that information off of some government website which assumes that every charging station is fully operational.

What could go wrong that would put a charger OOC for a year?
iIf I owned that thing, after  paying the price they want for some of those things Id be PISSED !

A year?  .. so, what??  lack of parts, lack of technicians to do the fixing, whats going on here?

Maybe this is a budding new line of work, like the gold panner of the gold rush era.     Charging station Maintenance / Technician / Troubleshooter.

I can report something similar. A big grocery shop chain installed several dozen charging stations all over the state mid last year, which are still not operable.
They definitely are connected to the grid, but the chain is still in negotiations with potential service providers who are tasked later to run the service.
How dumb is that?

A grocery store near me installed two charging stations in their parking lot when they first opened under a new owner. Those parking spaces, being near one of the store's entry doors, were constantly ICE'd and there was no indication that the store was doing any enforcement. Two years after they were installed, the store removed them and they were replaced with new parking spaces signed for grocery pickups of call-in orders.

I keep wondering about all of the grants the U.S. government plans to hand out to each state so that they can install tens of thousands of new charging stations around the country. Everyone likes to install infrastructure and put their names on a plaque saying when it was dedicated - as long as someone else pays for it.  ::)  But then maintaining the facility (be it a school roof or a bridge) is not very exciting and tends to be forgotten once the money dries up. I really expect to see many of these government paid for charging station break down in the future and just becoming monuments of relics of the beginning of the EV age.  :(

It will really depend upon which company that the states contract with to build and maintain the facilities. From what I have read, each state will get to select their own installer and there has been no information who will maintain them. Perhaps the installer, perhaps an established company, perhaps a new company that was just formed to take advantage of the grants, or (heaven help us) perhaps by a state-run and operated maintenance program.  ::)

I can see some installer inking out some slimy service contract that is going to rape the owner but be 'vital' for them and making even more millions.

The parts will be almost impossible to get, the thing will be down months, the maintenance guy will go, im waiting for parts not my fault, yet still keep the ghastly money you paid them for the maintenance contract.  Given how sleazy this whole thing has the capability of becoming, I bet General Electric will be at the forefront of it all.  They are the KING of sleazy deals.

GE - Imagine it works.
GE - Were not happy, until you're not happy
GE - You can get better, but you can't pay more.
