Yeah, CCS is more expensive than gasoline on a motorcycle because they charge for time as well as KWH.

But all the free slow charging at J1772 stns and cheap to charge at home helps keep the overall price down.

But I hear starting in 2021, at least in CA, they can only charge for KWH and not time. This is great news for electric motorcycles in CA.

That is not what it says. The law will be that any new DCFC stations installed in 2023+ must abide by the price per kWh instead of timed. By 2033 they must retroactively fix all old stations to comply with that as well.

That means my entire ride the other day should have been for free. But NBD, as I think we need to support the chargers if we want more in more areas. But when is this special deal supposed to end? I will probably try it next time. In fact, I think I did download that app, but never used it.

Yeah, I noticed that also, right after I posted it.  I think they changed it from more than a year ago when I first heard about it. I assume there were too many complaints from the charging companies  and perhaps lawsuits. It would have especially screwed over Tesla with what they said they wanted at first. Tesla promises to never profit on their Supercharger network, which means the drivers will get screwed by the changes if they were forced to put meters on their old chargers. Any profit they make (including the fines for not disconnecting in time) goes back into the Supercharger Network to maintain and build more Superchargers.

I wonder, though, about all the point of sale units that have to be added, it was a huge giveaway to VISA.

Tesla SuperChargers usually are NOT free. But there are some special deals, such as six months of free Supercharging when I bought my Tesla M3. I think with some of their more expensive models, it is always free. But that is not the norm.

And even when free, it's certainly metered. IIRC, they simply credit the same amount back to my Tesla account. I have only used the free Supercharging two times. A couple of other times I had to pay, such as when I was in Mt. View to buy my Energica.

Tesla Destination Chargers are free and not metered. But that is paid for privately. Common in hotels, banks, some casinos, etc. And also in houses, like this one, as well as in my Auburn place.

People are very smart and I've given up competing with their Giant Brains.

Add me to the list who will rarely use SuperCharging, free or not.  Gas is a LOT different! It's more about the convenience with Tesla Owners. Do you have a gas station in your garage? I have  EV chargers in each of my garages. Now add that into the fact that most people drive less than 40 miles per day. Not many have a need to charge their EVs on the road. But many do just because it is so often free (such as here in Reno with J1772) while they are eating in a casino or whatever.   

I usually take my electric motorcycles farther than my Tesla and I often have to charge the bikes  on the road because of the limited range. I will often  be using chargers on the road with my EM-cycles, as I often go around 200 miles on every trip.

If we had gas stations in our garages, then very few car owners would get gas on the road.

To me, it's the convenience, not the cost of home charging that makes the big difference.

However, here in Reno, home electricity is cheap.  11.7 cents per kWH. Twice that in Auburn, but just about everything is more expensive in CA.

Until you try to get through NV on I-80. Fernley to the next charge station is 133 miles in Winnemucca. And much of the speed limit is 80 MPH with many going faster.
