Side Stand Maintenance - How NOT to do it

During wintertime when you can't ride the bike you have time to do maintenance. Or at least you try  ::)

My side stand was not snappy anymore, so I decided to dismantle it and give it a cleaning/greasing job.

Without much thought I simply tried to loosen the fixing screw from the front side which turned out to be a bad decision.
I did not recognise the stand sensor is mounted on the back and fixed with its own nut on the very same screw. By turning the fixing screw I managed to wedge the SSS nut into the sensor, nearly damaging it beyond function.

So be warned! First step when dismantling the side stand has to be to unscrew the nut of the SSS and take it off.
Only then you can loosen the screw of the side stand!
Refer to the sketch attached for a better understanding.

When reinstalling the SSS, be aware that the litte nose has to fit into the groove of the side stand for proper function.

TIP: You don't need to unhook the springs first, that's a hassle you actually don't need. When the fixing screw is removed, you can turn the side stand upwards and use it as a lever with very little force.



BTW: I am looking for a replacement for the damaged SSS now. I learned there are two types. A) with sliding contact B) with hall sensor. The latter is the more modern version.
Problem is, the sensor on my Ribelle has three wires which makes sense for a hall sensor, but only two wires are used - if you look on the connectors, the SSS connector (female) has three contacts, the bike's connector (male) has only two. I find that a bit mysterious.

Anyone knows what is going on here?

UPDATE

During the last two rides it happened that the bike did not respond to the throttle anymore. It helt the current speed but did not accelerate anymore. The gree GO was gone from the display.
After cruising to a halt in a safe spot and trying to reinitiate, the message "Side stand down" came up, so I knew it was the sensor. I wiggled it and I could go again.

Yesterday I dismantled sidestand and sensor and dared to open it (see pictures).
It is in fact a metallic contact switch actuated by a notched plastic wheel and not a hall sensor. Technology of yesterday  ::)
Manufacturer is LEONELLI of Spain and the sensor has the reference (type) number 063.
By my mishandling it, apparently the copper contacts were bent. I tried to rebend them, but I don't know if that is sustainable, so I am looking for a spare part.

An internet search found me that this sensor was also used for 1198 Ducatis MY2009-2011. Might also be installed in Aprilia 50 RS MY1999-2001.
The advantage of using the Ducati spare part is, that the connector appears to be the same as the original. I ordered the Duc sensor (50 Euro) and will report later if it fits as expected.

After testing, I can report that the Ducati spare part is operating. The connector is matching and does not have to be re-wired.

Only thing: The wire length of the Ducati switch is too short, there are approx. 25 cm missing.
To access the connector, the upper 'tank' fairing and the side fairung under the seat have to be dismantled. Or you need the dexterity of an ob-gyn :P

As described, the sensor has 3 wires, but one is dead-ended at the connector, i.e. only two wires are leading to the bike's control unit.
Workaround in case you are stranded because of a broken side stand switch: When you short-circuit these two wires on the bike's side, the control unit gets a signal that the side stand is up and you can go again.

the ducatti will work, that type of sensor is actually very common.
the 3 wires is for how you need the switch to operate, power, no or nc, pick the correct wire to hook it up.  the hall, yah it needs 3 power, ground, and signal return is typically what those are.   the halls are interchangeable too, you don't need that exact part.

Update:
Found the official data sheet of Leonelli, maybe helpful for later reference. I think this covers all questions regarding the sensor.
On Ducatis the sensor is mounted as shown on the sheet, Energica hides the sensor behind the side stand.
