« on: March 22, 2018, 02:16:48 PM »

Do you guys think this would be interesting? Is anyone with an Alta interested in fast charging?

Does anyone know Alta Engineers I could speak with to see if there are safty specifications they would like followed etc?

Thanks!

Of course we want fast charging! I've PM'ed you.

I am not an EE guy, so that diginow website might have as well been in Chinese, LOL. Doesn't Alta already sell some kind of an optional $700 rapid charger with the MXR models?

They may be EE guys... but they're not web developers. lol

Per https://www.altamotors.co/redshiftmxr#redshift-mx-1

It appears that they advertise the battery pack as 5.8kWh at 350V (up to 400V in their reasonably full online PDF manual).

The offboard charger is rated for 3.3kW. There's something about 2.7kW and it's unclear whether that's another option or some kind of onboard capability?

I'd guess you'd want to stack DigiNow units in series so the switching transistors operate in their intended range while matching pack voltage, and then use CAN coordination between them to operate in unison. 2 units at 6.6kW would be over 1C rate so I'd definitely spend time consulting their engineers on what programming they'd like.

If you use the series operation and have to de-rate the charger operations, you might even rely on passive cooling of the DigiNow units. Maybe that'd keep the cost down or packaging simpler to weigh against needing more units per install.

Some EE might know about the suitability of DC voltage doubling or tripling on the output to avoid complexity. If it can be safe given whatever switching technology and safety circuits are involved for inrush protection, etc etc.

They're near SF and I know some engineers through local channels. Alta makes an interesting bike. Maybe someday they'll make a bike I'll find suitable for my interests.
