It looks like Daylight Savings Time will likely be made permanent in the entire U.S. next year. The bill was unanimously passed by the U.S. Senate today and will be sent to the House of Representatives later this year. My guess is that it will be approved there and then sent on to the President him to sign into law. Here is the story:

Oh no, not this again. We tried it in the early 70's. Public opinion of the change went from 79% to 42% in 3 months, with everyone whining about children getting killed trying to get to school in the pitch black. Nothing has changed. The fact is, the day is much shorter in the winter, and clocks need to reflect that. People think they're smarter than 50 years ago, but it's just the opposite. Not only do they come to the wrong conclusion, but they don't learn from the past either.

That is the big problem with human nature. We never seem to learn from the past.

OFFS!!  Why DAYLIGHT TIME?  If you want to make a time permanent it should be STANDARD TIME!  Jeez.  Why not just make us all UTC and to hell with it???

I feel the same way, but most people right now, would prefer DSL all the time. However, their preference might change next winter if get what they ask for and need to wake up to go to work or school hours in the dark before sunrise.  The vote was all politics during this election year.

Arizona already does this, and they seem to be fine. Why not just change the hours of operation for certain businesses or schools during the winter?

This was attempted in the 70's and failed because nobody wants their kids walking to school in the dark.  I don't know if "abduction" crimes were actually worse back then, but the optics today are certainly worse.  I was encouraged to leave my yard and explore when I was a kid, and not to come home until dark.  These days helicopter parents don't even let their kids leave the yard.  I can't imagine this bill will make it past them.

Some of the younger members of Congress may not remember that issue, but Biden should  (Ok, well maybe lol)

Arizona, being farther south than New York and New England, already has longer daylight hours than we do so it probably doesn't make much difference to them.  Same for Hawaii.  Alaska is so far north it also doesn't make much difference for them since they have so little daylight in the winter, and so little darkness in the summer.
