Here is an announcement about an Italian electric motorbike startup concept with an electronic power controller that mimics a manual transmission which is looking for investors. Didn't we learn from Brammo that electric drive and shifting don't mix well? What's next, an e-moto where you have to maintain a pretend-mixture of oil and gas or the motor seizes? An electric that doesn't start in cold weather unless you pull the choke in? A kick-start crank?

"strong brand" indeed.
The transmission mimicry idea is dumb  (people conservative enough to insist on shifting are also conservative enough to want an ICEV until they're outlawed).
But beyond that, the last thing the BEV bike segment needs is more startups, and crowdfunded ones at that. Crowdfunding & heavy manufacturing don't mix.
Such initiatives can only hamr the segment when they inevitably fail.

What we need is actual large manufacturers stepping in with volume manufacturing of actual middleweight+ bikes.

Actually I can see a place for transmission. Although the torque may be even across the rev range the "throttle" control could be useful to match the fine control you need to the "throttle" arc used.
For example if you have an off road emoto and you are doing technical riding as throttle that give you fine control across a wider arc than you need for highway riding.
Although a logrithmic curve control may do the same , in practice.

Sure, but that exists anyway with  riding modes (which pretty much all ICE bikes have nowadays ditto) -- easy to implement since we're (presumably) talking throttle-by-wire in any case.
