Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / SDS Parking Brake on FST Platform Bikes
« on: February 01, 2023, 04:08:51 AM »

I had been wondering for a while if the SDS Parking Brake would fit on the FST bikes, but couldn't see if anyone had tried to fit one.

Comparing images of the rear brake carrier on both platforms, it appeared that the mounting points were similar, so I decided to take a chance to see if it could be installed on my SR/S, and it definitely fits 100%.  :)

The kit fitted directly without any initial modification, however, there was insufficient clearance between the front brake lever mount and the handlebar, to allow the parking brake lever to fit as closely to it as I would have liked.  To remedy this, I filed a small relief into the parking brake lever clamp, allowing it to fit closer and making for a much more professional looking installation.

The only other thing required was a P Clip mounted on the motor, to prevent the parking brake cable contacting the swingarm pivot.  From there, I routed the cable behind the rear brake master cylinder, along the trellis frame, and up to the handlebars.  On the SR/S the trellis is mostly covered by the fairing so the cable doesn't show, but I'm not sure how this would look on the SR/F, New SR, or DSR/X.  ;)

For anyone looking to add a parking brake to an FST bike, the Zero SDS kit is now confirmed as an option.

Still no release notes on the Zero website, but it appears to fix a Cypher III upgrade issue:

New Cypher III Firmware Released
New firmware will be released for our Cypher III operating systems as of today, Thursday November 24th.? This update includes the following:

Cypher III MMB Rev 28, BMU Rev 8, BMS Rev 21
Models: All SR/F, SR/S, DSR/X - MY22+ SR

Resolves an issue preventing users from purchasing and activating 10% Faster Charging Cypher upgrade feature

...

So, the update is only to fix this particular issue, it seems...

The Check Engine light seems to have been implemented from the 2018 MY.

The owner's manual shows it sitting between the temperature warning and armed.  I know there is a space on my 2017 SR at that point, but nothing comes on during the dash check, so there's probably no led, or no wiring for it.  The manual describes it as follows:

Indicates the motorcycle has detected an error, causing it to
enter into a state of permanent torque reduction. This light
will be accompanied by a dash error code.
See “Dash Error Codes”, on page 7.5 for more information.
Contact your dealer and arrange to have the motorcycle
serviced.

By strange co-incidence, at the same time Zero are announcing 2023 models in USA, I have just received an email from Zero UK, announcing that the 2022 models have now arrived in the dealers!

International shipping must've gotten really slow  ;)

If you change the country selection to United States, it should come up then...  It seems the 2023 model announcement is USA only.

Shayan got in before me on this one, but yes, they are just putting the 6.6kW charger in every bike now, limiting it to 3kW for the standard models, and 6kW for the premium.  Of course this means a little bit extra weight, but I would imagine not as much having twin 3kW chargers fitted.  Indeed, they may well have improved the design of the 6.6kW charger, and it could even be lighter.  Remember, Zero has already stated that the new 14.4+/15.6+ batteries are actually 6lbs lighter than the previous 14.4 batteries.

I know there are lots of people complaining about having to pay extra to unlock parts of the bike that they have already paid for (eg heated grips), but I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding about what is actually happening.  In reality, Zero is including this hardware at no cost, in the hope that at some stage in the future, they will obtain a return on that investment when the owner activates these "upgrades".

Zero is definitely betting on future revenues, however, I think they are also covering their bets pretty well.  I suspect that they are probably offsetting the cost of the additional hardware with the dealer margin that they would have to forgo when selling a Premium model over a standard one.  If the owner eventually opts to upgrade, that transaction is exclusively between them and Zero, there is no dealer involved, so Zero will obtain an even higher margin.

The one interesting thing I spotted in this video is that it wasn't even a 2022 model SR/S they were using (wrong wheel colour, no cypher iii+ "tank" badge, and ZF14.4 not ZF14.4+ or ZF15.6+ badges on the battery).

So, their complaint about having to pay extra for something already on the bike definitely doesn't apply in this case.  The navigation and reverse parking options both require a dealer install, and the extended range is not available at all.  If it didn't already have them, heated grips also require a component change. The only option which doesn't require a dealer visit is the 10% charging speed increase, which wasn't available as an option when that bike was made, so I don't think it's fair to complain about having to pay for it now.

This lack of attention to detail is always what annoys me when I see these opinion type videos on You Tube.

Not sure if anyone has reported this already, but I came across an article in Popular Science, where the Vice President of product development at Zero discusses the new higher capacity batteries for the 2022 SR, SR/F and SR/S models.

Apparently there are some improvements to the chemistry of the Farasis cells to allow greater capacity, and also to the chemical stability of the cells, which enables them to be charged to higher voltages.  They have also added two fans to the battery pack to provide some active cooling during charging (and possibly discharging).

The article can be found at:-

Personally, I think this whole approach is just the start of moving to a dealer-less selling model, like Tesla.  Just order your bike online and it'll be delivered direct.

Having the majority of optional features already installed, but not activated means they don't have to hold stock of every possible variation, just a few common models which will automatically activate their selected configuration upon delivery.

I've got to assume this is where they're heading, cutting the dealerships out of the lucrative accessories market will do doubt increase their profit margins, but is likely to alienate those same dealerships.  They will surely have already anticipated that they may well loose some dealers due to this, but if they are ultimately moving to direct sales, it's not going to concern them in the long run...

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: 2016 Zero SR Lights Fails to Operate
« on: September 28, 2021, 12:37:16 AM »
The DC/DC Converter does have it's own short circuit protection, so it is possible that it's tripping out before a fuse can blow.  The fact that the headlight comes on briefly would seem to indicate an internal or external short causing it to trip.  It likely means that the fuse supplying the converter is ok, and the MBB signal is also fine, as the headlight wouldn't come on at all if either of these were faulty.

I would remove all the 12V fuses, except the one for the side lights, for example, and see if they will stay on.  This will check to see if there is maybe an external short.

If the side light stays on, replace the 12V fuses one by one to see which causes the DC converter to trip out.  If the side light doesn't stay on, it looks like the converter is faulty, or has suffered water ingress.  The converter on my 2017 SR did a similar thing after it got wet, however, when it dried it out fully (took a while), it started working properly again.

That converter is still in the bike, going strong almost 2 years later...  :)

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Delayed/Smart level 2 charging?
« on: September 20, 2021, 11:36:42 PM »
SonOfAnakin,

I've have recently come across the same issue.  The problem is that the charge tank will only hold the battery contactor closed for a short period of time (less than an hour, I think) when it detects no current being delivered from the level 2 charger.  At this point, the bike will go back to the "key off" position, and will not come back on, even when power is delivered from the level 2 charger.  I believe one of the smart charger companies in the UK had the same issue with the MG ZS SUV, and their solution was to "trickle charge" the MG at approximately 6 Amps,  thus keeping the MG awake until the night rate kicked in, and then switching to the full 32 Amps.

Unfortunately, this is not really viable with the Zero, as it would probably be well through the charge cycle before the lower night rate started.  I have, however, been experimenting with another solution, and it is possible to use the on-board charger to "kick start" the level 2 charger, by the use of a charge lead which provides power to both the charge tank and the OBC simultaneously.

In this case, all you have to do is key on the bike, plug in the level 2 charge lead to both the charge tank and the OBC, and connect it to the charge point.  The charge point will detect the presence of the bike, allowing it to schedule the smart charge.  The bike can then be keyed off as normal.  The charge tank will eventually open the battery contactor, and put the bike back "to sleep", however, when the smart charger starts the charging cycle, it will trigger the OBC, which will in turn activate the charge tank.  With both chargers operating you will also be charging at over 7kW!

I believe it should also be possible to make up a special charging cable which won't require the bike to be keyed on initially, and which will only run the OBC for a few minutes (just long enough to kick start the charge tank), but so far, I haven't located the correct relay/contactor which would allow this to work...

I get the same file corrupt message when I try to update the firmware too - it's been like that for the last 3-4 weeks at least.  There's probably a different file for each model year, and one or more of them may not have been uploaded to the server properly.  I have a 2017 SR, if anyone has been able to successfully update the firmware on one of these to the new version, let me know...

Ulster Zero

I think it's more related to IOS vs Android as I had the same file corrupt error on my iphone but I was able to download it and update my MY18 FXS with my android phone. I tested both phones the same day.

Thanks dalamario,

I can confirm it's definitely an iOS issue.  I borrowed an old Android phone, and was able to update the firmware no problem.  :)

My app keeps complaining about not being able to download the new firmware and the file is corrupt (iOS). Is this just my bad luck or is it a common issue?

I was seeing those messages about a week before I was actually able to download and install it.  I just figured Zero hadn't finished updating their servers with the new software yet.

Uninstalled the app and still seeing it. Guess I'll need the dealer to upgrade it if I'm going to get it at all.

When I bought my S and was trying to register it at the Department of Motor Vehicles, they couldn't find the federal compliance sticker. There was no evidence that it was ever there. I called Zero and they had an entire set of labels on my doorstep the next day. When I pealed and applied the new label, the adhesive was marginal at best. I didn't think it would be there for very long. That was a couple of years ago and surprisingly it's still there. So make that call to Zero and they should take care of it for you in no time.

Thanks for the info...  I will give them a call, unfortunately, I'll have to go though Zero Europe first...  If that doesn't work, I'll try California directly...

Hi Guys,

Was just checking over my SR in advance of it's MOT (Roadworthiness Inspection), and I noticed the VIN label is missing.  There seems to be some small bits of adhesive residue remaining where the label was, so I assume it has fallen off.  Indeed all the other labels around the head stock for emissions, EU type approval, tyre pressure etc. are also missing!

Has anyone else experienced this happening?  The bike has never been washed by pressure washer so I have to assume they just weren't that well attached in the first place!

I don't believe this will affect the MOT inspection, as the VIN is etched into the frame, but if it does, are these labels easily obtainable?  I assume the VIN one would have to be printed with the correct number from the factory, but the others would be just standard.
