The most probable reason for the failure is the nominal voltage rating of the original part, which is 80 VDC. This is below the nominal voltage of the system. Even though it is within its operating range, it is still near its limits and for example an ABS system can have large current demands. A revenue minded design, lower cost to produce, higher revenue through selling more spare parts.

I had one dealer 10 miles away from me and a 2nd one 70 miles away from me....still I have to confirm the apparent room for improvement in regards to the customer service.

wind plays also a big role in the range....but in good riding weather and having fun, the range will not be as limiting as the overheating of the bike. If I rode my FXS the same way as a gas bike, it took only 30 minutes to make it overheat at 25 Celsius ambient temperature. As far as I know, the Zero app does not show the battery temperature, only the controller/motor temperature. The battery temperature is only visible in the logs.

Every single modification implemented has been Zero factory parts or completely reasonable and reversible items such as swapping out brake master cylinders.  I can revert it all to bone stock in 2 hrs.

Nothing I have done would impact warranty at all.

In any case, that did not even come up in the conversation with the dealer.

The zero website says 40 miles at 70 mph.  Cannot be done.

60 miles at 55mph cannot be done.

I get 50 miles at an average speed of 40mph.

Very misleading (fraudulent) performance claims by Zero.


Fun bike, but misleading advertising by the company.  Materially misleading and a case for fraud.

As far as the dealer goes, absolutely unreasonable IMHO for them not to buy back my stock configured FXE at a 25% loss to me , towards a trade in for another brand new Zero S at full retail price.

I am taking all the losses here.

They can then go ahead and make profit on my initial FXE purchase, on the sale of the same FXE as a used bike, and then profit off a sale of a new S to me again.

Or, I can get the lemon law involved and see if they agree about the false advertising claims.

Do you really want to give money towards a 2nd bike to a dealer and a company that you have this experience with? I wouldn't....

For that speed and that weather I think it is normal.
With normal summer weather you can expect 45 miles at 55 mph according to my experience.
You would have to stay at 35-40mph to get app 60 miles or little less, but it is dependent also on how you accelerate.
Don't forget to factor in the wind, that is also a big factor.

You will have fun with the bike if you stay within a radius of 20 miles  of your charge location (40 miles there and back).
Hypermiling these small bikes makes no sense, their strong point is the agility.

charge times and SOC percentages are with other Zero models taken from the nominal battery capacity, as done by other companies.

If you change the nominal capacity or the full state of charge to 110% so that you can have more optimistic charge times on the main page and on the press launch you are deceiving your audience.

if a battery has for example 57 Ah (7.2 Longbrick) the charge time for that battery is the time it needs to reach those 57Ah, so 100% and not 85%, which would be the imaginary 95% if you make that SOC level to be 110% just for show.

....ohterwise you would only charge 49 Ah into that battery and claim you charged it up.

Hi Guys,

has anyone else noticed how on the home page and every review they blatantly clame to be able to charge the 17.3 battery in one hour?

To substantiate that claim:

they mark the nominal capacity as 110%.
They give the charge target as 95%
The charger setup gives 12.6kW

So 95% of 110% (usable capacity 15.2 kW) is about 13kW.
This is just absurd.

I am even sceptical about getting those 13 kW into that battery  with that 12.6 kW charger, as the efficiency for sure isn't 105%.

I find it to be false advertising with the aim to desperately catch up to the competition with manipulated numbers.

I think I got it now, but I am still convinced that they are deceiving their audience.

The nominal capacity of the battery is 87.5% which is 15.2.
For them this is 110% for some strange reason
And then they claim a charge to 95% to be one hour.
For this you have to imagine the 15.2 to be 110% and you get 13.1 kW as the 95% charge target (but still optimistic, but they cover their back with the additional info, that this may vary).

At first glance you see:
max capacity is 17.3 kW
95% in one hour

and then you have "reviews" from the launch, where the reviewer simplifies it even further (as he was told on the presentation) that the standard charger charges it up in two hours and the extra charger in one hour.

For me this is false advertising.

charging up a 17.3 battery in 1 hour with a 12 kW charger is the new magic charging :) (and if no charger is around, you can use the old magic charging instead)

95% of 15.2 is 14.4....how do you get that from a 12.6 kw charger in an hour? And no charger is 100% effective, so I doubt it will supply the whole 12.6kw.

the capacity could be calculated with the consumption and the rated range at a given speed, but they opted to give it in empg instead of kw per mile.

The information regarding charging and the battery capacity on the Zero website is rather confusing (I suppose intentionally). Max capacity is  17.3 kWh, nominal 15.2 kWh, but supposedly charged to 95% within 60 minutes with a 12.6 kW charging setup. Not to mention the times to 110%. ...I know that this is their way of masking the pay to unlock features and all I can see is a tried and proven tactic....if you can not convince them, confuse them. BTW. they forgot to mention the continuous power of 48 HP.

If a capacity of a battery is given, that should be 100% and that is the maximum literally and not 110% and with no mention to which value this percentage is related to.

The charge time to 95% within an hour at 12.6 kw suggests a 14.4 battery. As does the range (80 Miles at 70 MPH) compared to a 14.4 DSR (78 Miles at 70 MPH).
The 14.4 is also the max capacity so I really do not understand the 17.3 and 15.2 claims.

They should clearly state the Ah value or kWh value, which you get with the price paid for the motorcycle and simple and clear information on the charge time to that value (which is 100%) at the time of purchase.

Will it be the same aluminum chain kit that is toast after 2000kms and eats up the splines of   the motor shaft?

when I left the bike on the charger longer for it to balance, the contactor clicked after charging was done, the green light stayed on and the BMS was balancing the battery with burning off the excess voltage in the higher charged cells. This will result in a lower overall state of charge. When I checked the next day, the  SOC was 98% and when unplugging and plugging the charger back in, the contactor clicked again and the charger charged the battery back to 100%.

This is my layman observation from what I saw and read from the logs, as I have no inside information about the architecture.

You would have to add the initial purchase cost of the EV, or even factor in the cost of parts like the battery, the charger, the DC-DC converter, the motor controller if you would add the periodic service cost of an ICE motorcycle.  In the big picture, the cost of owning the EV will be higher in my opinion. If I would want to save money with my ride, I would buy a small Japanese ICE bike. The electric motorcycle has other big advantages like no noise, no heat, no stalling and instant torque.

my understanding is that it balances only at full charge when the charger is connected. Usually I also have between 5-12mV. In my case regen braking seems to increase the imbalance.
