The guy with the FXS is not responding back anymore, but the owner of the S model has and sent the VIN. I'm going to try to find someone at Zero HQ who could possible help me to find any history of recalls, repairs done, etc. Hope this works.

Curt, are you able to support the bike so you can get the wheel off the ground so you can spin it by hand? If so, checking the spokes will be a lot easier. The quick way to check the spokes is by tapping each spoke with something made of metal - a screwdriver will do - and listen to the sound. After you have struck several of them, you will know by sound if it is tight (higher pitch) or loose (lower pitch). There are spoke wrenches made to set the spokes to the proper inch/pounds and if you own a bike with spoke wheels, you should get one. I would send you mine but I loaned it out already and never got it back. But the tapping method will get you mostly there for a start. Spokes usually break if there is a loose one and it throws all the stress to the opposite side of the wheel. It also does not help if the spokes are too tight. Just go slow here because if you do tighten too much, you run the risk of breaking spokes and twisting the wheel. Good luck

Some new happenings -
 1) a 2018 FXS 7.2  has come up for sale, 2,000 miles.  $6500 add price. The owner said he really has not had many serious replies and has lost interest in it and would be willing to take 5k.                                           
  2) the 2014 S model, 13KWH I passed on -  The owner, the real owner apparently, is very willing to give me any info I want. It seems I was communicating with his housemate that had permission to sell, but handled it a bit badly. The owner was on a business trip, is back for some weeks and wants a deal or is going to try to get one of the local motorcycle dealers in the area to buy it. So I have to see if I can get any info from Zero Hq, then sort out which one to look at first. I just wish they were closer together, FXS  is 3 hours NE, the S three hours south west. Thanks for reading.

 I took a ride Saturday to check out another dealer about 40 miles from me that I just found about. They had a DS, SR, SR/S and a FX.  Nice people, let me sit on all of them except the SR/S, which was spoken for. Cripes, what hard seats! The one I tried some weeks ago must have been really broken in. The FX and DS were a bit too high for my taste with the SR  easily being the best fit, but the FX seems like it would the most fun, for me anyway. I'll keep looking....

 I figured that I could possible get the history from Zero HQ, but the seller was unwilling to give the VIN, serial number or anything else that could have helped me out. Hollywood Electrics did maintain the bike when it was in Cali, but I never was able to get anyone on the phone, even after several attempts during different times. Left messages, but I'm sure with everything going on, they just did not have the time to answer. But once I could not get any info from the seller, even as I was looking at a 6 hour drive one way,  I did a hard pass. No problem, bikes come up for sale all the time and I'm willing to wait for the right one. Thank you for all the responses, I really appreciate it.

I guess the other thing that stuck me as odd, was the prices on the used Zeros. Many of the bikes that are approaching that 5 year mark or beyond it, have prices of 60% or more of a new one. Some of the asking price of the used  FXS's , for example, are $6500 to $8,000, depending on the year, 2016s being the lowest, 2018s, the highest. I can get a new 2020 model for $9,600 and change, And then get the 10% tax write off. Why buy used at the before mentioned prices?

Having some history on a multiple owner bike and charger that had been replaced would have been a plus, without that, I was not willing to move forward on the sale. On an ICE bike, it is a whole lot easier to know what your are getting up front. Of course, any one owner bike is easiest yet, but on the Zeros with multiple owners, I think some kind of paper trail of any work done should be expected. Yes, It could be perfect one day after a thorough check out out a dealer and break down the next - any bike is susceptible to that. But my budget was stretched as is was and I was not willing to roll the dice and hope for the best. The local dealer was willing to check it out for me at their hourly rate of $170, but was not willing to give me definite price. The next dealer is in Raleigh, about three hours away. Anyhow, I am going to look out for a FXS or wait for the next great deal to come along.

I just wanted to thank everyone that replied. I am walking away from this 2014 S deal as I can't seem to get enough answers on the history of the bike. Since the on board chargers seem to the weak point, it would be nice to know if it had been replaced in the last 21K miles.  I also realized that I am more interested in a FXS model as the range would be fine with me and would probably like the ergonomics better. If anyone is interested, I'll talk to the guy and see if he is agreeable.

If you like wrenching on motorcycles, buy a used Royal Enfield Bullet. Wrench on that and then go riding on your Zero.   ;)

 I should have been more clear in my statement. I like wrenching on motorcycles - other people's motorcycles. I work my own usually to only get them going, ride awhile and sell off. I wrench to raise coin, so I can ride. I don't touch the family budget. As far as the Enfields go, I have worked on them. They have improved the quality in last few years and are a charming reminder of the past, but I prefer to live in the present.  Enfields are really too slow for today's road and crazy drivers. I live just outside of Charlotte, NC in Nascar territory where every other person thinks they are driving for the checker flag.  The Bullets are fine for back country roads ( my favorite kind of riding), but breaking down in the middle of nowhere is not fun. So no thank you, I won't be buying one. :P

Not to pile on here, but there is a youtube video from a guy named Kevin Gaeke titled "Nightmare Zero FXS purchase". Short story is it had some kind of problem, so he returned it to the dealer. While it was in the dealer's shop, it was submerged during a flash flood along with some other bikes. I hope this is not the bike that you now own.

 Well I am a newbie when it comes to Zeros for sure. But after over 40 motorcycles, I am so intrigued with these bikes. The short test ride I took blew me away with the smoothness and application of power. At least enough power for me, I'm slowing down a little, but sure don't want to stop riding. I still enjoy wrenching, and will continue to do so to stay busy and supplement my income.  But I really am looking forward to learning something new. My father used to say, " if you are not learning, you are not living". Of course riding too. Lots of riding!

Do any of you think it would be worth it to wait for a newer model to come along? I was reading about the 2016 change to the motors, that is, the IPM. Is it that much of an improvement over the older tech?

 Theran, you are probably right. I have a Versys 650 that has a seat height of 33.1, but with the width of the seat, it was a little dicey. I ended up lowering it an inch with an after market part and with the sag adjustment, it ended up being around 31.5. Works great now. the seat on the FXS looks narrower, so I really want to look at the FXS 7.2 and figure out if I can live with 45% less range than the S 13KWH model.

I think I am going to go check out this bike. There is also a FXS up for sale coming in about $500 cheaper but with a 7.2 battery. I've never even sat on one and with an inseam of 31 inches, it may not be a good fit.  Thanks for all the responses. Side note: This really cracks me up, almost ever forum I have been associated with starts with direct answers to a comment. then the heresay ones come in,  followed by members commenting on comments, then it leaves the rails completely. Such is life.

Also, the seller does not have much in the way of paperwork for any work that has been done in the past. Is there any way to look this up? I tried to reach out to Hollywood Electrics, who supposedly maintained the bike, but have not heard back.
