A couple firmware updates ago I began getting daily CANBUS Communications Faults. Returned after clearing but only after riding and not while sitting in garage.

After this update I no longer get the faults. I suspect now it was the kickstand state detection…the prior firmware tightened the parameters and my particular bike fell outside the parameters and faulted. Never had an issue with the bike showing the correct status of the kickstand on the dash though.

The 12V batteries on the SRF and SRS and the new SR are lithium (not traditional AGM etc).

As for parasitic drain…there are no accessories on the bike and I wasn’t about to troubleshoot drain when it was going to have to trailer to the dealer anyway.

Dealer replaced battery and states everything else is ok. Apparently some of these 12v batteries haven’t been lasting.

Still seems like a firmware issue to me as even newer bikes are all of a sudden struggling with this issue on the forum.


So….it’s been almost a year since my 12v battery was replaced and today the 12v battery was dead again.

We had a very cold week recently…perhaps the battery heater is at issue.

As I commute on the SR/F I’m thinking of investing in both of these… thoughts?

So... I suspect my 12V battery is now below a normal operating voltage (key on and the bike is dead).

It's garaged, always plugged in (not in storage mode), and ridden at least once a week. I don't see how under those circumstances the 12v lithium battery should EVER be low. The MBB and/or BMS should periodically wake and keep the 12V in good charge state.

I also doubt its the cold temps.. last winter the bike was also garaged, always plugged-in, and ridden weekly without issue. Points to a firmware issue I think.

Very frustrating on a commuter bike... who has time to deal with big firmware issues like this? Even if I get the 12v battery replaced the next one will discharge again!

Consider the Michelin Road 4s. They lasted a really long time on a previous motorcycle, and I've seen reports of 7000miles on them. The Road 5s and 6s don't last as long as the 4s do.

I haven't been able to find the 12V battery voltage in the app... where is it?

Also, I suspect there must be an issue with the BMS or MBB logic that recharges the 12V and main battery. I've noticed if I have scheduled charging turned on and leave the bike plugged into the charger, the BMS will charge as scheduled at the next charging window but will then let the main battery (and 12V) sit to slowly discharge thereafter. The bike will not wake up to charge at the following charging windows (once a day). After a couple weeks the main battery will loose ~10% charge and the 12V will be low. Seems the solution is to key on and off once a week, OR unplug and replug the charger, OR disable scheduled charging.

In all our cases, seems like the MMB or BMS firmware for main and 12v battery charging needs some attention.

Follow up for my bike: as long as the bike is actively charging SoC and location are correct. Once the bike is charged, I lose SoC and haven’t been to verify if the location remains up to date.

When this started over the fall/winter I wondered if perhaps cellular costs were adding up for Zero and they changed their cellular logic to save on data usage. Today, I got an email saying they’ll be charging for cellular use after two years of ownership. Interesting.

I don’t recall reading about having to pay for cellular connectivity after two years on the SR/F and SR/S when I purchased. Anyone else get this email?

There’s an update to the Gates Belt Tension app for iOS...significant upgrade from the previous version. Even allows for a “motorcycle” option.

I’ve been tensioning the belt by “feel” (vibration transmitted to pegs/bars, noise, etc) as I found the previous app unusable and the recommended tension with belt tension tool to be too high.

After updating to the new app, checked the belt and consistently hit 67Hz, fittingly nicely into the manual’s recommended frequency range.

Worth trying the app again if you’ve given up over the years.

Some more findings:

The SR/F brake light has the rear running light and the brake actuated light. It seems the brake light is actuated by taking the white (black stripe) wire to ground...it's a ground switched circuit. The assumption here is that there are two separate circuits, one circuit being brown 12v and black ground for the running light, and the second circuit being the white (red stripe) 12v, and white (black stripe) ground for the brake light.

I also did some more testing with the GearBrake (I have the non-flashing version). It only seems like an inclinometer if its mounted level so the sensitivity is high...any declines cause the brake to light. However if mounted with an incline the sensitivity is lowered and it very obviously works as an accelerometer as long as its not at a very steep decline. This may be a non-issue by running the calibration procedure, I'll have to test.

So, I think this all means its possible to install a the GearBrake on the SR/F but it'll take some more effort:
1) Install will need a normally-open (NO) relay. The yellow and blue wires of the GearBrake would power/control the relay with the load being a tap from the white (black stripe) wire and a tap from the black wire. (A diagram would clear this up, forthcoming if I get a chance.)
2) As it's possible that either or both of circuits powering the brake light are actually from the MBB, a regular automotive relay will NOT do. The back EMF of a coil relay would likely kill the MBB...its not worth assuming the MBB has built-in protection. It'll have to be a solid state relay which completely isolates the control side from the load side of the relay.
3) Finally, my electrical knowledge gets fuzzy as to the advantages of adding diodes to further protect the MBB... I'll do more research here. I'll also share a bill of materials once it's figured out.

PaulZero if you have the time and equipment I recommend soldering your connections to prevent issues down the road. Posi-Taps would be a great alternative otherwise, they provide a more secure connection than bullets.

As to the LED indicators from Zero, they're in the 2020 accessory catalog but without a description of how they work. I doubt they'll sweep, most OEM LED indicators work as standard flashing units. For the price they're probably asking, it may be worth looking as some of the indicators from Motogadget or Rizoma. Either way, as Crissa said, it'll require the dealer updating your bike for LED indicators...the issue is whether the update would work for aftermarket indicators or just the Zero indicators.

Hi all.

First post in the forum... I'm also trying to install a GearBrake on an SR/F. Here's what I've learned so far.

A) Slightly different observation on black striped wire (measured from bike harness unplugged from brake light)
Black = ground
Brown = 12v
White (red stripe) = ~13.3v on meter (relative to black ground wire)
*White (black stripe) = 8v (relative to black ground wire) when brake level is released. 0v when brake is squeezed.
PaulZero can you confirm this on your bike?

B) The SR/F brake light connector is a four-pin AMP 1.5 Superseal Series Sealed connector. I sourced from CycleTerminal and have confirmed fit on the bike. http://www.cycleterminal.com/amp-superseal-connectors.html

C) GearBrake sent me a wiring diagram that only uses three of its four wires (blue goes unused):
GearBrake Green wire to bike ground
GearBrake Red wire to bike 12v
GearBrake Yellow wire to bike "brake signal"
GearBrake Blue wire unused

I've seen other GearBrake diagrams online that use all four...hard to know if they are different revisions or just different options for wiring.

My initial test on the GearBrake shows potential difference between the yellow and blue wires to be 0v when on a flat surface and ~8v when inclined. Seems opposite of what the SR/F brake lever signals to the brake light. Also seems to me that the GearBrake is more of an inclinometer and not an accelerometer. Before connecting to the bike I'll do some more testing but what would be really useful is a description/diagram of the GearBrake internal design/operation/logic...

D) SR/F turn signal connectors look to be the single wire Molex connector from the SDS platform as linked to by Crissa and as found in the unofficial Zero manual. I have yet to purchase the connector to confirm fit.
