Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: DSR/X belt tension
« on: October 17, 2025, 03:22:48 PM »
I do it purely by feel now. If I can just twist the belt 90 degrees in each direction from the middle, it's good.

Same here, never broke one in 93'000 km. The shop changing my tires do a lot of work on Harleys so I trust them with handling my belt.

"... full regen at 100%, and no serious cutback of power right down to 0% ..."

Same here, I really enjoy being able to use the full 100% range of the new battery's capacity.

My last two batteries were from the previous generation and were partially defective. Each ended up losing about 30% of their original capacities, which was enough to trigger Zero's warranty. I actually had the third one on order from Zero (under warranty) when I did my multi-country tour in the summer of 2023 in Europe with the defective second battery. I just had to make do with about 150 km of range.

My experience: it might be luck or good engineering from Zero, probably a mix of both. My SR/F was assembled in the summer of 2019. Today with nearly 84'000 km it has its third battery, but the little 12 V one is still original. Never had any issue with it, always plugged in. Winter storage has never worried me, I keep the main battery between 40 and 60%, checking every 4 to 8 weeks, that is all.

Yes, if only one phase is available where you are charging, then your upper limits are going to be 220 V and 16 A, thus below 3.5 kW (includes conversion losses). The two built-in chargers in the Zero can take 16 A each and are using the first two phases, the rapid charger can draw 32 A from the third phase to add 6.6 kW of charging power giving the total of ~12 kW.

I am limited to a single phase and 16 A thus charging at home with 3.3 kW max. That is good enough with my Tesla, so largely sufficient for my Zero. As you probably already know, the vast majority of public AC chargers will give you three phases thus giving you 6.6 kW, and even 12 kW if you have the additional 6 kW rapid charger in the frunk.

Was your mechanic a Zero mechanic? I’m thinking I may need to find a shop that is outside Zero’s network. I’m guessing Zero may have a policy that disallows them from working on or repairing motor components so the only option is full replacement. (Pure speculation though).

Yes. They could have told me that the motor bearing was going bad and I would have believed them, but they didn't.

If yours objects, I would ask again or try (if you can) another Zero dealer, from experience they are not all equally good.

I remember that, once you remove the belt, one could feel with the hand that the pulley wasn't firmly attached anymore. Any good mechanic with the right tools should be able to help with that, and if you can source a new pulley you'd solve your problem for good.

I know this is an older post but I hope you get a notification and have a moment to reply. Thank you!

Sorry for the late reply, in the winter motorcycling takes a backseat in my mind.

It is worth trying. In comparison of my SR/F, I still don't fully understand why my Tesla M3SR+ which is 6 times heavier and has four large wheels only requires 1.7 times the energy per km.

A year ago, I went through the same situation. Here is the link to the related thread in case you haven't seen it yet.

Now with 82'000 km, nothing to mention, aside from a worn out rear tire that I need to change (again).

What was cause of all these failures? Did you have pay for the new batt or did they warranty it?
There is a 5 years warranty from Zero / Farasis on the battery, which applies to anyone who has taken resonably good care of the battery as described in the manual.

From the symptoms, not a continued and linear degradation, but a sudden loss of capacity after (in my case) about 30'000 km. It would seem we are dealing with mechanical / physical problem with how the pouches were assembled in the factory leading to a sudden capacity loss which is, I must say, quiet well managed by the BMS. The "degraded" batteries are still perfectly usable, in fact I did a 800 km trip last summer with one. You'll have less range and the SoC is less reliable, but I still had all the torque I wanted.

More info on Zero Motorcycles batteries is avalaible here:
from r/ZeroMotorcycles

As for Energica, they are also dealing with the need of using high density LiOn batteries, thus must be facing similar assembly chalenges. I don't know about their reliability but their warranty is smaller (3 years or 50,000 km). You will have to pay to bring it to the same 5 years as Zero: https://www.energicamotor.com/us/extend-your-ride/

<<< ... better range than when Bike was new, full regen at 100% SOC. No power cutback at zero SOC, when charging at 6 KW the charge starts to taper above 70% ... >>>

Also the new battery here, and those same findings. I hope this new design will also pass the 34'000 km mark and go much, much beyond that. In my case the previous two batteries (with the original design) didn't; they then suddenly plunged below 80% (magic charging, etc.) and the logs convinced Zero to replace them at no cost (under the 5 years warranty). My SR/F has 81'000 km, and still drives like new. Best motorcycle I have ever owned.

My DSR/X with charge tank from France .Maximum height is 8cm

Thanks a bunch. Now I can see that there would be a bit more space left on the DSR/X, than with the SR/F.

Thanks for the SR/F frunk with charger picture. Makes it easy to see the difference.

11
Since the DSR/X frunk is significantly larger than that of the SR/F, I wonder if that translates into more space leftover once the 6kW Charge Tank is built in. I am keeping my expectation low because I am quite sure that the same charger is shared with the SR/F, thus not optimized for the DSR/X internal frunk volume. Nonetheless, if you guys could share your experience, or post a picture of a DSR/X frunk with the 6kW Charge Tank, that would settle the matter and be much appreciated.

I recently noticed something else. Scenario: charging to 100% SoC and then riding downhill. Back then with the old 14.4 kWh battery I would not get any regen braking. Not so with with the 17.3 kWh battery. It appears as if the software caps it at 15.6+ kWh for charging, but not while using regenerative braking.

« on: June 06, 2024, 12:43:08 PM »
No spare belt here, but I kept my previous two belts at home. For my peace of mind when riding I chose a roadside assistance insurance instead.

Do you have coverage in areas of no cell service?

Over here in Switzerland (and neighboring countries), whenever I don't get cell service, which is extremely rare, then I am very likely somewhere in the Alps on a slope, and should the belt fail, I would just gently roll back down to cell service coverage ;D.

My Zero mech changed me the motor sprocket at 71'000 km, but due to wear (from rusting) to its inner teeth. Seeing what that meant for you I am glad I didn't try myself. Thank you for documenting what you have done.
