I haven't tried the CAN bus, but the serial connection definitely shuts down when there is no power. My microcontroller just talks to the bike via the serial interface, and home assistant polls data from it when connected to the Wi-Fi.
I permanently mounted my microcontroller to my FXS with a small battery bank. It that lasts a couple days. I wired in a USB charger to the accessory power which kicks on when the bike is charging or the bike is on. And in both those situations I can ask the bike for all the stats I want through the serial interface.

I'm pretty sure there is no turnkey solution, like the delta-qs, for charging the non-modular batteries off bike.

But the largest question is "Why do you want to pull it out once a year?"

These Zeros not having a 12V battery backup from the DC-DC is idiotic and dangerous. If you run out of fuel with any ICE vehicle or even electric automobile they will still have lights. Huge oversight.

I prefer not having yet another component that can fail. They can keep their 12V batteries.

But watts are easier to figure out, such as it takes about an hour (not counting heat loses) to charge a 20KWH battery at a steady 20KW.  We can get a rough idea how long a charge will take if they use wattages on both the charge station as well as on the vehicle. Charging a 22KWH battery, at 32 amps isn't so simple to figure out.  Especially when most of us don't even know the battery voltage.

You could just as easily talk about the A-h of the battery instead of kWh.
