Thanks for all the help. Ordered a new OBC through dealer (800 bucks). Besides the OBC itself, all you need is a handful of nylon straps to hold the cables in place.
Bit of a pain to reconnect everything but definitely not the worse maintenance to execute on Zeroes. I was given another one from the same manufacturer (the one with that green logo), same hardware version and all, which is a bummer, there's nothing that makes me believe this new one won't fail again at some point.

Guys thanks for all replies, just as an update, I replaced the OBC (800 bucks!) and everything is back to normal again.
If this one dies again I'll probably do the tank.

Excellent video! That's it!

Looks like there's no need to reprogram anything when replacing the OBC, is that so?
I'm about to order one from the dealer.

Does anybody know if the OBC has to be reprogrammed once replaced, or is it plug and play?
I'm about to order a new one, just double checking.

@SRich can you tell us what you ended up doing? I'm having the same issue, my onboard charger literally caught fire. Good thing I had my eyes on and it happened right when I plugged AC in, so there was very little damage, but sure enough the charger itself ceased to work.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Does anybody here has the wiring diagram for the onboard charger?
I'm willing to do this replacement myself, got the part number in hand (45-08253). I'm getting a quote on it today.
May as well just not use it and get a Delta-Q instead, going directly to the battery it should still get me going and for 600 likely the cheapest way out of this situation.

I got home today, another regular comute, SOC was 9%, plugged into the wall (120VAC @ 60Hz) and boom:

A sound like that of a popcorn machine started inside
Smoke started to flow profusely from somewhere above the motor

As soon as the brain understood what was happening, the power was disconnected and it all stopped.
I tried to turn the bike on to capture logs and everything seems fine, in fact the bike still runs.

I think the rectifier or something related to the AC-to-DC portion of the charging subsystem fried.
Have anybody seen anything like this?

I took the "tank" and seat off just to see if there would be anything obvious on the top of it, but it all looks normal from there. The charging stuff seems to be under that cable mess on top that I'm not willing to play with.

Now I'm afraid to but this back into the garage because of the fire, don't want my house to go down because of Zero.

Thanks!

Lower prices all around. To be more specific I'd suggest $3,000 - $4,000 lower price on each model. Additional optional improvements I might suggest: more color options, better brakes, traction control, and full color screen. I can 99% guarantee your sales would go up. Supply and demand. The demand is luke warm at the moment because the technology is still relatively new and the prices are too high for the average motorcycle buyer. I would expect to pay a little more than a gas bike but not as much as a brand new car or nice used car.

I've been lurking these forums, YT videos, and the Zero website for years. Every year I check back in to see what changes they've made. The prices are the main thing holding me back.

As MostlyBonkers stated above "I'm now of a mind that they should concentrate on reducing the price. They are selling a very standard mid range motorcycle at a premium price." I completely agree. For the price you're paying for these motorcycles you should never have to wait a month for the company to respond to your issues, as JaimeC has experienced.

The longevity of these bikes is also a concern to me. The warranty doesn't seem to cover everything. I've also read plenty of issues people have had within the first 2 years of owning one. I'd be curious to know factual stats as to how many people have a problem with their bike within the first 2 years (actual problems, not something like needing new tires because they're worn out). I really want to own a Zero but I feel like they need a few more years to work out some kinks and improve everything.

There's no way I'm going to drop $11-$16k on a brand new bike to have something like this happen on day 1...if this had happened to me, I would've returned it the same day for a full refund and never looked at the company again. I'm sure it's a rare occurrence but that's just crazy. Makes you wonder how it passed quality control on the way out of the factory...

That's my video, cool.

Well, as that person who had that failure, here's my suggestion:

-Make a firmware stack that is reliable
-Fix the OTA update

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / 2017 DS OTA firmware update fails

Hello guys, is anybody having problems updating the DS from BMS 30 to 31 and MBB from 23 to 24?
I get all the blinking light show in the dashboard but after 30 long minutes the app tells me that the process timed out.
