LOL, that's the understatement of the century.  I think the last numbers for the Livewire is 653 sold in 2025.  That's over all four quarters.

flat roof, even then tilt the thing about 15 degrees, it's a middle spot to catch the sun all times of the year but more importantly let the water drain off, otherwise it pools and when it dries, the pollen etc cakes and hardens onto the panels really dropping their efficiency.
if you want battery backup, go that route, if you are in north florida i can get you a good deal on new lith batteries,  i say north fl because we could possibly meet up or you could go get .vs. shipping which kills the 'deal'.   otherwise something like the enphase inverter makes it a quick simple install and forget about it item.

ive been doing solar for well shit. 40 years now so have learned a thing or two over that time.

Every time those solar salespeople hit me up either at my front door or in Home Depot my default reply is:

"Unless the installer is going to mount every individual panel at 184 degrees south and 25.6 degrees off horizontal, we're done here." 

Then they stare at me like I've got a dick on my forehead.   ;D 8)

Anyone have the wiring diagram for this motor and what controller I can pair with it?  Also, the connecting plug for the Hall sensor I believe is what is pictured.

It's not a Hall sensor, that's a sin/cos encoder.  It's the Zero 75-5, 75-7, 75-7R, or ME1507 motor.  It pairs well with the Sevcon Gen4 controllers (if you know how to program them) or any number of sin/cos encoder capable controllers.

matt, forks can survive some amazing shit.  when i wrecked the ego last year, the forks were unscathed  amazingly enough.  for what i did that bike should have been destroyed but i dodged a bullet.   in your case, it sounds like The bike had a sudden stop. the forks may have been compressing to take this load into compression energy to let it back out as the spring let loose.  The battery being bolted solid now, is unsprung, so that sudden stop had nowhere to go, so the mass inertia of it just snapped stuff where it was holding.  were they stock forks or upgraded.

Stock forks, I'm guessing.  They're straight as an arrow too. 

I've since completely gutted the whole bike and am now bench testing all the bits I'm keeping. 

I also separated all the battery modules and have load-banked them down to around 30% for storage.  it'll be a while before they get used so I didn't want to keep them at 110VDC for a bunch of months.

Out of curiosity, how & where did the frame crack?

Right where the downtubes drop down from the main frame rails.  It's as if the front wheel pushed the lower front of the battery straight back, which cracked the downtubes at the welds. 

I still can't figure out how the forks lived thru this though.  They look straight as an arrow.  I'll put them in the V-blocks once I have them off the bike.

i want any and all EV companies to succeed.  I think they are good, and it doesn't matter why really, people have their own reasons for liking or disliking things, and that's cool.  With that though the better they do overall, the better the acceptance and support for ALL things EV will be.  more car chargers means more bike chargers etc etc. better support overall for everything we want / need.

the price of solar has come down stupidly a lot, and if the dirty ass contractors would stop fucking RAPING people on the price to put the goddam shit in, more people could afford it even without the rebate they used to have.  Having panels on your house, would offset many bills for you.  Whjether you want to save the planet, cut your electric bills down, or have power in a blackout, panels on a house is an extremely good use case normally.

You can get good quality panels in bulk for 32  cents a watt now. top line in the 40's / watt.  yet they want to charge you 5 dollars a watt to install the stuff.  this is because they knew they could sell them on the 30 percent thing to people who didn't think it fully through and that meant obscene profits for them as well.    the gravy train is over, if they want to stay in business they'll have to quit eating filets and eat hamburger and sirloins once in a while.  I actually had one contractor tell me when i initially priced my setup, well everyone has to eat you know.  Right before i kicked him the hell out of the house i told him, i get that and im good with that but that doesn't mean that you have to order a prime rib every time someone else is paying for it.  He called a week later, trying to pretend nothing happened, and knocked the price down about 30 percent still trying to sell.   didn't happen.

Solar is doable, just have to shop around and try to find a contractor that's not a crook, and another trick.  have them put a small tiny system in, just enogugh to get it on the grid and signed off and you can diy / third party the rest later for a much lower price.   It's not the answer to every problem but would take a nice chunk out of many peoples transportation bills on solar .vs. gas.

A 5 kw battery with an 8 year warranty on it cost about 800 dollars now (its 48 volt, if you want to string12's together its a bit cheaper), this with say 6 -400 watt panels would give you about 10kw on a good day.  that's about 100 miles on your bike.  on a bad day, maybe 2 kw.  Doing the math, a panel can, at least in florida pay for itself in about 4 maybe 5 years. they are warrantied for 25 years.  plug that into your zero, livewire, energica, lightfighter and you got a solid system

Just wanted to say thanks for everything you've added to the DIY E-Bike scene.  More specifically, the research you did in hacking or replacing the Zero BMS on the 29aH Farasis modules. 

I recently bought a 2017 Zero SR with a cracked frame and clean title.  Over the weekend I turned the bike into 1000 pieces on my garage floor including splitting the battery apart.  Now I've got five 29aH modules (it came with the power tank too) with no scope or direction of use.  I assumed the 40-pin connector that went to the BMS could be repurposed to an aftermarket BMS.  Your work confirmed this, including a pinout of that connector and how to incorporate an ANT BMS onto the Zero/Farasis module. 

Now my plan is to use three of those modules for an E-bike build with a custom frame, but reusing much of the Zero components.  It'll be a standalone bike with no influence from the Zero MBB.  I've already gotten into the Sevcon thanks to help from Frodus a few years ago with that special IXXAT connector, so if I need to make changes to the controller I believe I'll be able to.  Worst case scenario, I've got an ME1507/Gen4Size6 bench tested and ready to go if I need to.

if you want to reduce weight, run 800 volts.  smaller wires, less copper.
there's always a trade off somewhere.

I thought about this, but 350V instead of 800V.  Then try making it work with the Supercharger network.  There's people in the DIY Electric Car forum who've done such things. 

I wasn't planning on going this route, but if there's incentives I can be pursuaded in that direction.  It looks like some of the axial flux motor manufacturers make some pretty strong 350V rated systems, but they're around $10K.

Yeah that's the propaganda they spread. Zero was considering using them as a manufacturer for their motor they had designed in-house. However the engineers were suspicious that Motenergy would attempt to rip them off. So when they sent the designs over to Motenergy to see how well they'd follow them they sent, shall we say, sabotaged plans that were much weaker. They decided not to go with Motenergy and, lo and behold, the ME1507 came out. Everyone I've talked to who has used that motor tells a story similar to yours and can't figure out why their ME1507 is universally described as "a sad panda".

Wow, that's interesting.  I guess I never heard the other side of the story, and since there's Chinese writing all over the motor drawing, it kind of makes sense. 

Regardless, I did buy that SR and have it mostly in pieces around my garage already.  The nice thing about all this is now I have plenty of battery modules (it also had the power tank) to play with and repurpose as I want.  And also a motor/Sevcon controller combo that I can hook my current comms cable up to and play with.

Shoddy ripoff?  It's my understanding from talking to Motenergy back in 2017 that they worked with Zero in the early teens on the ME1507 motor being used in the early S models (with the Sevcon controller) when Zero upgraded their battery tech from 48 VDC to 96 VDC.  Then Zero made their own mods to the ME1507 to the first 75-5 motor.  He said what they did but I forget, it was almost 10 years ago.  Something about better cooling IIRC.

Regardless, I'd be reusing this 75-7R motor, and hopefully the controller if I can.  My design intent with this build is reducing weight as much as possible, which means customizing the battery, or building my own design.  I'll also be building a new frame since this one's cracked.

Hello everyone

I've got a line on a 2017 Zero SR that is heavily damaged.  Most specifically, the frame is cracked, but the price is perfect for a "restomod" type build. 

I've done something similar a few years ago.  I bought a 2012 XU model with a "bad battery", which ended up just being a loose connection in the BMS (even thought the battery was crap anyway).  I never got along with the OEM Alltrax controller since it wasn't programmable, so I bought an aftermarket 300A controller that bolted right into the same place and allowed me to make parameter adjustments.  I also ditched the MBB and rewired everything so it was more of a standalone build with no influence from Zero engineering. 

I'm curious about doing something similar with this SR, but since this one comes with the Sevcon controller I'm wondering if I can butcher the OEM wiring and make this unit standalone without the MBB.  I currently own a Sevcon Gen4Size6 and an ME1507 motor.  Frodus helped me a few years ago get my old laptop connected to the controller and programmed with that special magical communications device and now I have a bench tested powertrain that works off a 5K ohm potentiometer.  See this video: 

Worst case scenario, I use my controller and motor, along with the SR forks, wheels, battery, etc... and whatever else I want to reuse, and an entirely custom wiring harness.  The Sevcon has a CANbus input and I/O that I'm sure Zero makes use of for many things (Regen, ride modes, MBB comms, etc...), but can I abandon all that crap and just drive the OEM Sevcon with only the inputs it needs to work and be successful?  Or does the OEM Sevcon REQUIRE connection to the MBB in order to function?  I have a solid understanding of the Sevcon Gen4Size6 wiring.  There's a few inputs that need to happen in order to make a motor spin.

Thank you for updating this thread, now we all can share this data. 

For my own curiosity, what's the point of getting into the MBB?  What can you change? 

When I had a 2011 XU with a bad battery I just gutted all the Zero components and went with a standalone EV conversion using some of the existing Zero 12 VDC components but all new 48 VDC stuff, like a new Alltrax controller with the Zero throttle wired to it.

Sorry bud, that project was about 5 projects ago, and I left it in CA before moving east.  I still got the ME1507 and Sevcon controller that Frodus programmed for me.  I'm gonna play with it from a 96 VDC worth of power supplies and a 5k ohm potentiometer.  If I can get it spinning I'll be putting it up for sale here on the forum.
