Hi all, I ended up building a "hybrid" motorcycle back in 2019 as part of a school project. I put "hybrid" in quotations since I was not able to engineer the bike to run on the ICE while also battery. This bike will run full electric till depleted and then park, the generator turns on an recharges the bike. I realize this is a bit counter productive. Ideally it would be able to use battery until depleted and then the ICE generator would be able to run and power the bike (while staying mobile). My bike was not designed to that level of engineering but holds the principles that it could be accomplished with some additional systems. Anyways, I ended up using a 2010 Triumph America chassis, the electronics from a 2010 Zero S (batteries, motor (agni 95R), controller, MBB, BMS, etc.), a 4kW general generator (6.5 peak), custom made aluminum 72 tooth rear sprocket, 13-17 tooth front sprockets, custom chain tensioner, cycle analyst, the Zero's Delta q charger, and a Meanwell RSP 3000 (Which I didn't end up using). With a 17 tooth front sprocket it ended up reaching a top speed of 81km/h. In total, it travelled 22.24km, at an average of 57.43 km/h and consumed 1891.5Wh. While maintaining 80km/h, the motor required 6338W and consumed 79.17Wh/km. These batteries unfortunately were approximately 10 years old and tired and so only at about approximately 50% their original capacity.

This was a very fun project, I learned a lot, and was a really fun bike to ride! Unfortunately the bike has sat since, and now the battery pack has low voltage and not accepting a charge. It would be a really cool project to throw some leaf packs or newer technology into the bike (and likely remove the generator) but for now I do not have the time or money to do so. If anyone locally is interested in seeing it or purchasing the bike (for parts or upgrade) I'd be more than happy to connect (not currently interesting in parting it out piece by piece). I also have plenty of pictures they are too large to share on this post but happy to share if interested. Anyways, let me know if interested!

Interesting to note thank you. I guess maybe I’ll charge it again and just keep a better eye on the kill a watt and see what’s going on when. I’m not looking for battery replacement but it is neat to know that someone builds that battery and sells them.

I would guess that the extra kW was consumed while in Float. It can also be the age of the cells, being they are at 80% now there should also be a charge efficiency hit.

The bike consumed just over 2kW while new it had 3.7 so that means my batteries are down to about 54% even. Does it make sense though to use a whole extra kW (50% extra)? That seems like soooo much to blame on the charger, degraded battery and circuit balances. But I’m not sure

Hi all,

I had an exciting week - I was able to take my project bike out to a flat rural road and do some road tests, and it didn't break down! woohoo. I have my cycle analyst set up and at the end of my testing (till the bike wouldn't go any further) I had used 2096Wh. I plugged the bike into the wall using a Kill A Watt metering device and 24 hours later when I came out too the fully charged bike it said I had consumed just over 3kWh.... could the charger be eating up that much power? or is there something else going on here?

some more technical information:

- I'm using 2010 Zero S components - 3.7kW battery pack (of course only 80% usable and 10 years old there is some degradation going on, but still functional!)

- 27km of range - I was accelerating up to full throttle, holding that for about 1.5km, stopping and doing the same in reverse. flat ground.

- Averaging 75Wh/km

- charger is a 48V Quiq

Can you help me make sense of the fact the bike took 3kWh when it only used 2?

First of all good for you! Just because other people haven't done it doesn't mean that you can't. I would say first that the real question is what do you want to get out of this bike and why a hybrid vs. full electric. from there you can start to make sense of your project and what range you need/want. From there of course you can start looking at motor, engine, and battery sizes. Chances are if you are expecting amazing range and performance the bike will be quite expensive and heavy, however if you just want to learn or would like a modest city bike I think this would be a fun project for you.

Thanks for getting back to me, after hours of screwing around I found that one of the pins going into the BMS wasn't making a good connection. Only found this out when just about giving up and just started wiggling wires. Thanks for the reply though and glad to hear your new BMS worked well!

Here's a video showing how I changed the front pulley on my 2011 Zero S.



Still don't know how to calibrate the speedometer. Right now I just remember that my it shows 12% faster than my actual speed.

Is it a 3/4 Shaft for the motor or 19MM (2 thousands of an inch smaller than 19mm) everything I am seeing shows 19mm but your video you say you used 3/4 hub sized pulley. Please let me know asap.

How many km to get to 3 bars?  the last 3 bars go fast.  ;) 15 tooth sprocket will give you extra 10 kph. Do you have a "Princess Auto" there?  You can make these drive sprocket from part they have sell.

these Agni Motors have 19mm shafts, were you able to find something to work? or did 3/4" hub sprockets work just fine?

Did you figure anything out? I took apart my battery and after a couple months am putting it all back together. when connecting the BMS I get the 5-3 Beep code too not sure what it is...

OK this project is back on. I can get a Meanwell RSP-2000 but would my bike be capable of taking 2 wired in parallel? this would be a 1C charge rate for the battery...

Hi guys,

I've finally finished drawing the schematics. Enjoy!  ;D ;D

This Diagram is fantastic thanks for making it! I have a question regarding the charger input connection... Red = Positive, Black = Negative, Green = charger detected, however what is the white wire? I know it says charge but what is its function? I am working on a 2010 project and am trying to make it capable of 2 quiq Q 1000w chargers. I am going to use thicker gauge wiring for the positive and negative cables and more resistant connection where the Black connects to the 3 others, however I am unsure what to do with the white. If anyone could let me know the function that would be greatly appreciated
