Rather than cutting the bike wiring, see if you can get appropriate connectors to just plug it into the harness.  You may decide to remove the device or install something else.  If so, it is an easy job to just reconnect.  It is also nice when selling a bike to note that the wiring is entirely intact.

When in the garage and no radio or other noise, I can barely here the fan.  With a helmet or out sitting at a traffic light, the ambient sound is louder than the headlamp fan.

Because the Max5 lamps use an aluminum extrusion for the heatsink rather then braided webbing, they stick out the back making it necessary to install the 1/2" spacers to ensure the various wires to not touch the unguarded fans.

Because I ride in all weather, I bought new stainless steel 30mm screws, lock nuts, washers, and aluminum spacers.  Total hardware cost from a local shop was $31.00.  Further, I needed to drill out the spacers because they were inch-dimension with a slightly undersize hole.  If you go this route, be very careful drilling them out with an unmodified drill bit, as it is likely to hog into the metal.  To prevent this, see , which while explaining for brass, applies equally to aluminum.

In sum for me, $40 for the lamps plus $31 for hardware, total $71.  If you use zinc-plated screws and reuse the provided nuts and washers, say $6 for screws and $8 for spacers, total about $54.

So far I am very happy with the lamps, though still waiting for the heat of Dallas summer to see how they hold up then.

Got my bike back from the dealer.  They said the batteries (or one of them) was not properly plugged in.  Still running version 53 firmware and the SOC looks much better. 

It is getting cold here again, so I will probably not ride it again for a month or so

I have a 2016 FXS with about 7800 miles on it.  With MBB firmware release 48, the "fuel gauge" was a pretty reliable indicator how much juice was left.  After upgrading to release 53 in September, the indicator bears no relation to the battery state whatsoever.   After a full charge and the phone app showing 115 volts in the batteries, the indicator will show 2, 0, 17, 24, or whatever, at start.  After riding a while, it may change to some other value or it may not. 

I have reset the batteries--why not--to no effect.  Is there a means to reset the MBB?  I have not taken the bike to the dealer, though will soon.  Perhaps there is a newer firmware release that addresses this problem.

Here is an addition I made to my FXS.

The lone tail lamp seems just too small and so I added an LED bar to the bottom of the license plates on my bikes.  Preparing an adapter cable allows the addition without cutting the vehicle wiring harness.  It also permits easy removal when it is time to sell or change things around.
