General Discussion / Re: CA EV gas tax proposals
« on: April 22, 2017, 05:08:48 AM »
From the CA SB1 bill text, it looks like ALL vehicles will get hit with a new $25 - $175 additional registration fee called the "Transportation Improvement Fee" starting 1/1/2018, but the EV $100 fee only applies to model year 2020 or later vehicles:
--------
The bill would provide for the deposit of various funds for the program in the Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Account, which the bill would create in the State Transportation Fund, including revenues attributable to a $0.12 per gallon increase in the motor vehicle fuel (gasoline) tax imposed by the bill with an inflation adjustment, as provided, 50% of a $0.20 per gallon increase in the diesel excise tax, with an inflation adjustment, as provided, a portion of a new transportation improvement fee imposed under the Vehicle License Fee Law with a varying fee between $25 and $175 based on vehicle value and with an inflation adjustment, as provided, and a new $100 annual vehicle registration fee applicable only to zero-emission vehicles model year 2020 and later, with an inflation adjustment, as provided. The bill would provide that the fuel excise tax increases take effect on November 1, 2017, the transportation improvement fee takes effect on January 1, 2018, and the zero-emission vehicle registration fee takes effect on July 1, 2020.

I do hate that they lie about the range in their advertising and from their salespeople, and wish they would stop doing that.  In 2016, I was told (in the same breath) that the base SR is "super fast, with great acceleration, and gets at least 100 miles per charge" (at Hollywood Electrics they told me this), when later I found out that the range is actually about 65 miles if you go super fast with great acceleration; you can only get 100 miles if you use ECO mode and keep your speed below 60mph.  And now in 2017 they are claiming 200 miles per charge if you get the extra battery... I bet that is also quite a stretch from reality.

Anyway, my 2016 SR is my primary vehicle and I love it, but making false claims does nobody any good.

I wrote some stuff on the brammoforum recently on this topic.

IMO the recently announced Mission R promises to be the closest thing to a Tesla motorcycle.

* high price ($30k for 12 kWh .. probably $35k+ for 17 kWh)
* very high performance, without qualifications
* lust-worthy
* interesting software support (HUD-enabled helmet, MissionOS telemetry, navigation)
* high-powered AC charging (9 kW J1772 versus Brammo @ 3 kW, Zero @ 1.3 kW)

This is an old post, but I thought I'd update it with news that Mission Motorcycles went bankrupt last year.

It says they are debuting a new app to set custom mode parameters; that's sort of an error as the app is not new.  They just put out a new version for the firmware upgrade capability, that's new.  I still think it's misleading to promise a 200+ mile range; people will assume that is at freeway speeds and for that it's 65 miles without power tank and maybe 100 miles with it, less if you don't use ECO mode.

Do you have a power tank Brian?  For me, granny speed is eco mode on an SR, and maybe because Im spoiled by sport mode  ;)  So sadly the SR can only carry my 245lb ass for 65 miles highway at 70mph before Im down to single digits on the battery.  Im told payload doesnt matter so much as motor RPMs, but the extra weight has to create extra load thereby impacting range.  Im probably not very aerodynamic so that hurts my range as well.  I posted a pic of my National Cycle Street Shield EX in the windscreen topic...   (Adding Politically correct disclaimer) I do not mean to disparage Zero at all, I love my SR!!!  ;D

That's the range I get too, 65 miles from 100% to 2% on a 2016 SR in ECO mode at max throttle 70mph with large Givi bag loaded up and me at 200lbs.

90 miles on that route on one charge and then 19% left?  Wow.  Keeping the speed below 65 mph must be the main factor.  My 2016 SR was similarly loaded on my range test trip in ECO mode but I had throttle to the max the whole time (70 mph) and range was more like 65 miles from 100% to 2% (that was Palm Springs to Fontana).

So you don't believe us that reported the cable fell out?  It did... just takes some bumpy roads that cause vibrations in different directions, I guess.  One time I went on a ride and when I got home the cable was half sticking out about 6 inches and I almost lost it that day.  Wednesday when I lost the cable I'm sure nobody stole it as I didn't make any stops on that ride.

Yes, I was using the swingarm hole with the original 10 ft cable, which doesn't fit in the center hole.  I did order a couple of 6 foot cables as spares so maybe I'll try using the center hole with one of those and see if it's more secure.  I should get the new cables in today's mail.

Similarly, I have some data from this morning after I picked up my Elcon charger last night and also lost my 120V cable (don't ride with it in the frame, it can fall out!), so had to charge at work at a level 2 ChargePoint this morning.

I was at about 60% this morning and it took about an hour to get to the 85% level where it reduces current and was at 100% and no current at a total of 90 minutes.  The max rate was 4.09kW, much better than my last ChargePoint charges on the adapter cable that maxed out about 1.4kW.  This is with a single Elcon charger with 2 cables going into the bike, one passthrough to the side standard port and one on the quick charge port underneath.  The ChargePoint station was a dual unit and the other side was in use so it's possible I didn't get the maximum possible current out of it but it seems about right.

The Elcon is bulky, heavy, and unwieldy to haul around but in use seems to perform similarly to the Charge Tank, and in this sample test slightly better then the 3800 W last reported.  The advantage is less cost and I only need to carry it when I'm going on a long trip (or in this case when my regular cable is missing).

I've had two 10' cables (the original and a replacement) fall out of the tube... I gave up and carry it in the bag. :)

I lost my original cable yesterday on a ride from Hollywood Electrics (in pothole land) to Pasadena in rush hour, and I guess it fell out of the frame.  I just ordered some spares from cableleader.com, a nearby company that has the 14 AWG cables in stock in multiple lengths so hopefully the package will arrive in a day or two (already shipped).  Went on a futile attempt last night to find a cable from hardware and electronic stores last night but nobody had one thicker than 18 AWG.

Don't recommend frame storage any more.  >:(

I put it towards one of their external quick chargers.  I decided on that rather than the Charge Tank because I only need it when going out of town and don't want to carry the weight all the time.

I know this is an old post and this question may have been answered before but I couldn't find it.   ???

It seems every time I look for charging stations they seem to be on different networks and I need to sign up for an account to access them.  I'm trying to get signed up for all of them I might come across so I'm prepared, and was wondering if there was a list somewhere?  I'm in Southern California and so far came across these either in person or by looking at the PlugShare map, and was able to create an account for them:

ChargePoint
evGo
evConnect
blink

There are additional ones for Nissan and Tesla owners but we wouldn't be able to use those.

Are there any I'm missing?  Feel free to reply with other networks even if regional, just specify where you are located.

Yes, I got an incentive visa card and it was declined when I first tried to use it but got it straightened out by calling customer service a few times.  Their website is permanently down so that didn't help.  Anyway I took it back to the Zero dealer and spent it all there on Thursday, they took it with no problem.

For instance in Upland you could charge to full in about 20 minutes.
Using what?  Even with the Charge Tank it would probably take 1-2 hours to charge at Level 2, wouldn't it?...

An 11kW/hour battery system rated for 5 Constant (5C) rate of charge would safely take on 55kW and be done charging in about 15 minutes to 85% state of charge;  Provided you had a source of power (Upland has this much power?) and the charging electronics (Hollywood Electrics offers this?), and further your pack could safely dissipate the rise in heat from the process.

Did I infer that correctly?

Well you are assuming there is a supercharger available for the 2016 Zero SR, which is not really true except for some experimental DigiNow units that aren't being sold now and maybe some other extremely expensive and heavy homemade rigs.  Even with those, I don't know of a setup or a charging station that would provide 55kW in 15 minutes to a Zero, unless you have something that works with those Tesla stations (do tell!).

I stopped at Hollywood Electrics yesterday and they have 2 options... the Charge Tank and the external charger (or 2), which would help a lot but even with those it would take over an hour to get from 5% to 80% after riding from (for example) Palm Springs to Fontana (that's as far as I made it last time on the way back).
