Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: 2020 SR/F Performance Issues
« on: June 03, 2023, 12:04:26 AM »
I have Magic Charging too on my 2019 SRF (ODO 11000km). It depends heavily on the Power I have used and the Ambient Temperature the bike sits in afterwards. From only several % after smooth riding up to 20% magic increase after Autobahn. But I wonder if there is a relation with the last FW Updates/SOC Algorithm, because it appearded relatively suddenly for me and my bike still performs reasonably well on low SOC.
I also noticed Charging behaves different after the latest FW-Update when reaching 100% or charge target now. Charge Current does not ramp down continously as it did before but intermittend decreases and increases current (sometimes down to 0A), until it finally completes charging.
I really took care of my Battery from the first day on (except for VMax Autobahn riding sometimes). I Only let the bike sit with ~60% SOC in my dry and good temperated Garage. 100% charges only directly prior to driving, most discharges have been well above 20%. charge with max. 3kw only, never charged a hot pack or in direct sun, never charged a cold pack or in low temperatures...

To check SOH I just ran the bike to "0%" (165km @ 25°C), where it still accellerated to 60km/h. After connecting Charger, it directly started charging at 9% SOC and took 11kwh, so I assume the ~12kwh are somehow still available in my pack. Since then, magic charging seems a little less, only around 5% the last rides.

What would interest me is your experience with newer bikes or replaced battery packs after another several months and mileage? Keeps Magic Charging completly gone? And does Charging Current ramp down smoothly at target SOC?

Thanks and best regards,

Marco

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Zero S 2013 acceleration
« on: September 28, 2020, 11:23:07 AM »
Hey Guys, thanks for the hints, especially for @MbLDC. I checked the Throttle and it was dead. I do not even know how it worked until now. For now, I found another 5K potentiometer at home, 3D printed some parts, and have a working temporary solution, until the new Magura throttle arrives.

:-) Great to hear (super, dass es geklappt hat, bin auch aus Good old Germany).
How does your temporary solution look like?
I changed to Domino Throttle back then, which is sealed, is more of a quick throttle, and seemed to be of higher quality.

Check the throttle: I once had limited power on my DS '14. Finally found out that it was caused by a faulty throttle (Magura 5k Poti, which seems to fail quite often). https://zeromanual.com/wiki/Unofficial_Service_Manual#Throttle

SOC on my DS14 (where I kept an old Firmware Version as long as I owned it) behaved more like a coulomb counter, even under heavy load it did not drop unproportional. But at the same time, Power was sometimes limited even at more then 50% SOC, depending on battery temperature.
With my SRF, it is different. When driving WOT (especially Autobahn > 130Km/h), SOC drops more rapidly, than Energy Consumption would explain for. Then letting the bike sit for a while or just Power Cycle, SOC suddenly rises sometimes 10% and then decreases as expected when driving again. My guess is, that newer Firmware Versions somehow calculate the usable SOC taking the actual power demand into account (similar to Range Estimation). Beside that, Power seems to be limited only at lower SOC with newer Bikes, so it behaves more predictable especially when overtaking on country roads, which sometimes scared me on the DS. You never really knew if it would allow you for that..

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: SR/F belt whining noise ~25 mph
« on: August 26, 2020, 02:03:45 PM »
My SRF had a pulsing whining at slow speeds too, escpecially when recuperating. It got better with mileage. If acceleration itself feels smooth, I would not think it is a serious out of round issue. Also, in my case the whining was synchron with belt revolution, so I think it is the belt itself.
Align the Belt to not rub the rear sproket flange, as you allready did, and keep it on the lower tension limit. A little amount of silicone oil applied only to the Belt flanges also helps. Keep your Belt and sprockets clean and carefully inspect the sprocket for debris. One time I suddenly felt a strange High frequent Oscillation in the footpegs. I then found this to be caused by a tiny piece of crushed tarmac, that was trapped in one tooth of the rear sprocket..

This wheel lift fits the front forks :
https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07L3MG3PQ

Just want to state, that this Front wheel lift DOES NOT fit the SR/F.
As expected, the asymetric Fork Ends require an adjustable wheel lift for one side. I will have a look, if i can find another one that does have this feature.

This is not the case with Amazon B07L3MG3PQ.

But how does this symmetric, non height adjustable Pin-Stand fit, when the Pin holes on the fork have ~1cm height difference? Did you try it? Thanks!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Zero vs Energica
« on: November 07, 2019, 08:00:08 PM »
First and foremost, because this was posted to the Zero sub-forum, I consider this post attention-seeking and inappropriate. I wish Energica enthusiasts wouldn't take up space on Zero forums "negging" on the bikes. They can co-exist just fine serving different parts of the market.
Energica is focused on the track, and Zero is focused on the daily rider. The latter seems more likely to produce a useful motorcycle that can scale in sales and production.

I appreciate this community and especially the open mind-set. So why is that first post inappropriate? It is just a valid Idea of a comparison and food for thought in my opinion.

For me it looks a little different. Energicas main disadvantage was and still is its huge price. Besides that, it seemed to be an extremly powerful and high quality bike above Zeros lineup for several years, until Zero finally matched it with the SR/F. But many people complain, that the SR/F still does not have the capacity (~20KWh) and practical useable charge speed (=ccs) it would need to be Travel- and Autobahn-proof.

For me that is not an issue, because my SR/F's use-case is perfectly covered. I am a daily commuter, but most bikers here in europe make long bike trips or drive day-tours as a hobby.

Technical Solutions that our Zero features (Belt, no gearbox, passive cooling) are interesting and make it unique, but they are not always better or more robust, as sometimes claimed. Liquid cooling for example is inevitable at a certain perfomance level (drivetrain and battery, if cold weather performance is needed) - take a look at the EV-Cages. The maintanance it takes, is minimal.
Chains need a bit more care, but they are extremly reliable and efficient.

All in All Energica more likely shows the way the big OEM will follow, in my opinion.

Nevertheless Zero is extremly innovative and hopefully will keep up with upcoming competition!

Best regards,

Marco

Perhaps the wider and stiffer belt used on the SR/F contributes to the noise.

I think so, also the resonance behaviour of the real stiff rear swingarm (which I like in comparison to the S/DS) and the storage compartment seems to amplify belt noise.
It is not the noise itself that sounds cheap (I really like the tie fighter like sound while accelerating  8)), it is more about the pulsating howl caused by tension variation while rotating under no load (which seems to be caused by not perfectly round pulleys).

Wash belt in mild soap and water.

I will try that. Thanks!

Hi Folks,

Thought, my question might fit into this "sound topic"  :D

I drove my SR/F for about 600km so far. Works perfect and a lot of fun to drive, especially in sport mode  8)

Question to SR/F-Owners:

Does your belt-drive also sound a little rough and "wobbling" under no load and slight recuperation (<10%)? Under load and at higher speeds the acustic wobbling is gone, and despite that, the drivetrain works perfect. Its just an unconfortable feeling, when the bike makes such a cheap noise while coasting in urban areas. Tension is right within spec. (~65Hz in the Gates-App), and belt does not rub against the shoulder of the rear pulley.
Maybe its still a burn in process and will get better over time? My old DS' drivetrain was not perfect and wobbling too, but it was way less present all the time. I knew that the new and more rigid drivetrain of the SR/F might sound louder, but I hoped it will be machined and balanced more perfect.

Regards,
Marco

I just saw this video while surfing the net collecting new Info about the Bike - I have no relation to the one who took it  ;)

We just called EuroCycle Reno.  They told us there is nothing wrong with their Zero SR/F.

There's been an interesting little development in my world since my last post on this topic...

I can understand your motivation. Nearly all ICE-Bikes offer more bang for the buck than the Zeros do, especially in the 20k price range. But that is no key argument for fans of electric propulsion. The best electric overall package is what I am interested in. Easy Scooter-like commuting in traffic and beeing able to extend the way home to a fast spin with the same bike is the appealing feature for me.
For me a valid SR/F-complain could be serious quality issues and lack of support/parts in a couple of years, like it seems to be with the early Zero models.
BTW - does anybody have news about the delivery progress? Real quiet the last days..

Hi Marco,

I'm shooting myself in the foot by getting rid of my Honda. I love that bike more every time I ride it.  I'll have to get myself a cheap petrol bike from eBay for the longer trips. My reality is that I seldom go that far from home. I also love not spending money on petrol.

What V-twin are you running, out of interest?

Best,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Since a couple of years I own a '99 TL1000S, which I beware like an eyeball. It was my dream bike back in the days, when I got my drivers license (but it was far to expensive for me that time).  ;D

I always love to have some "back up" with my vehicles. And similar to bicycles, each type of bike covers different use cases, so does the Zero.

Best regards,

Marco

Similar story with me, same motivation.

I have a 14'DS, which I trade-in for a new SR/F. Besides Wheel Bearings (which I fixed with a CNC spacer and Heavy Duty Bearings) and a new throttle, the DS never let me down and was a very reliable workhorse for my daily commute the last 3 Years (and 24tkm).

It was my first step into Electric vehicles (besides Bafang Bicycle conversion). Was not disappointed and now I know, that my mobility future will be electric.

Upgrading the bike was simply due to get closer to a performance level, where my V-Twin allready is: Excellent Suspension, Dual Disc Brakes and sufficient Autobahn-Power (in exactly this order).

But I will keep my Fossil Bike too, because I will always love "old school" biking with shifting and the liveliness of a combustion engine.

And more important: Beeing able to drive several hours on a wonderfull Sunday in a rural area will take another few years to become reality with electric bikes.

Now impatiently waiting for the delivery. And a little anxious about the first (hopefully only minor) issues, a brandnew bike series will bring along..

best regards,

Marco
