FINALLY the nightmare ends! My Zero DS has at last gone to meet its maker. After suffering from terminal FFH (Failed Firmware Horribalis) that caused it to be workshop-ridden for almost a year now, I finally managed to pull the plug (sic) and return it to its maker for a refund (ie Zero bought it back last week).

RIP Zero DS 2014-2018

Hi All, I wonder how many of you know it is common practice for Zero and their Dealers to take parts from your bike, that happens to be in the dealer's workshop at the time, in order to replace faulty parts on other owner's bikes for so called "warranty" replacements!? Just because Zero and their suppliers are too useless to keep replacement parts in stock!? (and probably because they are actually all really crooks)

Its the second time it has happened to me now. If you read my other posts you will see that my 2014 Zero DS has been in the dealership for almost a year now since Zero's failed firmware update messed up BIG TIME! Zero offered to buy the bike back eventually cause they could not repair it 100% but in the middle of that process the dealer went into liquidation. When I tried to get the liquidator to release the bike to me  even though it was finally reassembled with a new battery, BMS, DC-DC and Mainboard , but still had charging and dash error issues (rather than lose it to the liquidators) I was told today they CANT, cause it is lying in pieces, seat off, side cover gone, charger stripped off!!!

They also confirmed there is another Zero DS just like mine on the shop floor and that paper work shows it was waiting for a warranty replacement charger! go figure!

In 2016 the dealer actually took a DC-DC converter off a brand new bike on the shop floor to fix the warranty claim on mine!

I mean really!! These people should all be jailed!!!

I Already asked for full refund months ago, Zero just ignored me. Now I heard last week that the dealer (who still has my bike) has gone under and everything is locked up in a liquidation case. Can the talented Mr Dale do anything about that!?
So its far worst than flawed firmware, Zero incompetence , lemon bike; ITS LIKE A LIVING NIGHTMARE!!!!

Morning Jamie, you could always move to the UK and we can look after you. LOL.

Joking apart, sales of our motorcycles have really taken off this year worldwide, as a direct result there are some shortages of certain 2018 models of which the S is one of them. The 2019 models will be available by November 3028, to avoid disappointment you could pre order the S model that you require now with a small deposit with your nearest dealer ensuring you get the model you are after.

Selling out of models is a success story, the direct opposite of incompetence, which means more people are waking up to riding Zero’s and are not just thinking about it but buying one. The more folks that buy the more travelling by 100% electric is accepted by the motorcycle riding public.

Shortages of supply help Zero residual values hold up too, which is a good thing for the investment made by the owners of our bikes.

Bottom line, don’t go elsewhere, sorry that you have had a problem, stick with it, I am happy to help, even if you the other side of the pond.  Please do let me know if you have any further drama.

The previous thread is correct however, the current prices are quoted clearly online.

Have a cracking weekend.

Thanks for the heads up Tom.

Seriously Dale, do you expect us to really believe that!? If zero was just one small percentage as serious about after sales service to their customers as they appear to be in selling them this flawed motorcycle it would be a miracle!! Can you explain why my 2014 Zero DS is STILL at the dealer, more than 10 months after Zero bricked the BMS with a flawed firmware update, then slowly, month after month replaced just about every electronic board AND the battery on the bike, and now it does not charge fully and ends the charge cycle with  flashing dash!?

I think its a clear sign to JaimeC to NOT buy one!

More Zero client services hell!!!
In my previous update post I mentioned that Zero finally agreed to buy back my bike because it hasn't been fixed properly after their failed firmware update (the replacement battery now has issues), and so I have been waiting patiently for the buy-back...but as if things could not get worse, THEY JUST DID; I heard this week that the reason the buy-back from Zero is not happening is because the local dealer just went belly up. So now my Zero DS and the Thousands of dollars Zero paid the dealer for the buy back  ARE ALL LOCKED UP IN A LIQUIDATION CASE!!!  >:( >:( >:(
Everyone is going to loose big time here, the only people smiling are the liquidation attorneys; I wonder how long it will be until Zero goes belly-up, the amount of technical problems being reported on this forum over the past few months seem to be increasing exponentially!!

Dude, sell it quickly, you will only regret owning one, like I do!

See my post about failed firmware update causing major nightmares on my 2014 Zero DS. If you read my post about failed firmware update in Nov 2017 and that my Zero DS is still there (10 months now) waiting for a buy-back since even their replacement battery does not charge fully and the dash flashes in error from time to time, you will know to STAY AWAY from this brand.
And as if things could not get worse, THEY JUST DID; I heard this week that the reason the buy-back from Zero is not happening is because the local dealer just went belly up. So now my Zero DS and the Thousands of dollars Zero paid the dealer for the buy back  ARE ALL LOCKED UP IN A LIQUIDATION CASE!!!  >:( >:( >:(

PS I am trying to work through Zero Amsterdam too, not much luck there..... lots of "I'm sorries" but no real customer satisfying action.

TLDR: Zero gave me a 2018 FXS to replace my 2016 FXS at no cost to me after being in multiple shops for months.
Really sorry to read about your experiences, sounds as bad as mine with the 2014 DS I bought early 2016.

I am however not so easily "bought over", getting a new 2018 FXS to replace your flawed 2016 may sound very nice and be vary satisfying riding it, but it could suffer a similar fate, eventually, or other worse problems (like the FXS at my dealer with failed motor, that owner also waiting for months now for replacement).

So I am finally at the point where Zero said they would buy back my 2014 DS because they cant fix it back to the state it was in before their BMS firmware update failed (and basically trashed the bike)

Reason the buy back is taking so long... they are all on summer vacation and nobody there gives a toss!

Please fill in the survey on the realted topic on this forum; I selected "too many problems, will never own one ever again", maybe you do too?

So update regarding my 2014 Zero DS "repair" that took nearly 9 months;
Yes, I did get the bike back now... Zero phoned me last week to tell me the dealer got it running again and all is fine... OR IS IT!!!???
So I took it for a spin, runs like a dream as before.... BUT the first charge only went as far as 95% >:(
Then I tried a second charge, that only went to 88% ! On a brand new battery! The phone app also shows that if it ever did charge to 100% the capacity would be only 11.4kWh (the capacity of the old battery), but the replacement is supposed to be new 13kWh unit (says so on the label!?). Also the app stays on 6 charge cycles, never increments, and the total kWh used is -13602  :o
The final straw this morning... overnight charging ended with a flashing dashboard and now the App says "unrecognized bike model" ::)
So, I still want Zero to buy back this rubbish, this again justifies all my other posts, their EV's are doomed, the components are too poorly designed, built, integrated and neither the dealers (nor Zero) can service, maintain or troubleshoot them!

PS for those who don't know, this whole issues started when Zero's firmware update failed and bricked the bike's BMS.

9
Oh yes the bearing, probably the "drive end" one, which can happen if the belt is tensioned too tight. Glad it was sorted though, and that you are OK after that other accident and still riding.

I wonder if Zero ever reentered that country's market after their withdrawal?  ??? I haven't heard much from Australia lately.

Apparently not, judging from a recent post on the Zeromotorcycle Facebook page by an Australian.

I had one major problem with my Zero (I mean, other than it being destroyed by an inattentive asshole), and that was the motor itself (a mechanical part).  It was replaced under warranty and it was running just fine until the encounter with the previously mentioned asshole.
The Zero's electric motor has a mechanical part!? I would love to know what that is? Do you have a photo?
I am a qualified electrical engineer and in my understanding the only part of the motor that could remotely be called "mechanical" is the rotor itself, it has supermagnets glued into it. On old "Zero-force" motors the magnets can come off due to centrifugal force and destroy the stator (the outside casing with the windings in it). But the later Zero-force motor has the magnets slotted into cut-outs at an angle so that they can never come out mechanically. The diagram below shows the various possible arrangements for permanent magnet motors.

Have you already talked to a local lawyer about this?
Lawyers over here wont do anything until you pay them upfront, so no luck there. But we do have a motor vehicle industry ombudsman who can take the dealer to task, and yes I have lodged a complaint with them and suggested they force the dealer to buy the motorcycle back from me and settle the lease finance with the bank (the bank actually suggested this approach).

But to be fair, Zero has messed up, they should buy back the bike. The dealer has already told me they wont be importing any more Zeros to South Africa since they are having too many problems, and the poor support from Zero is costing them money and reputation.

You got a really bad one, but don't think they all are...

Don't be so negative at all what is Zero:  yours sucked and they didn't handle it correct.
Hopefully they learn from it, they don't want bad publicity I'm sure.

Their basic bike / frame / motor / handling / power smoothness is really good.
It's just mostly their firmware upgrades that need more testing before releasing it...

Its actually just a matter of time, I was really happy with mine initially too until reality caught up with me. The reality is that electronic components and assembly boards have a significantly shorter life than mechanical parts! Just concider mobile phones and home / laptop computers! Not only have they got a possible three to four year life, but the manufacturers almost want them to last a short while only so that people will buy the new models! What's more is that most modern ICE vehicle complain about the most, is the unreliable modern extravagant use of electronics in our cars! For example, the electronic ABS is sure to give one trouble long before the master or slave cylinders and/ or brake rotors and calipers fail! So good luck to those with happy Zeros, long may they last...

Yes, he seems blissfully ignorant of what is behind that "gift". Zero is pushing so hard to get sales up so that they can afford their previous failures (see many posts on firmware fiasco and 2012 model buy back). I think its going to bite them when the current models fail and they continue to give bad service. Then I tried to reply to his post where he "marvels" at the low maintenance, to tell him it is BS because when any zero electronic board fails one cant repair it, you have to buy a new one for mega dollars; but he deleted my comment...

15
Fair comment Richard, but I wonder how many people know that Zero's electronic boards come with conventional PCB edge connectors which they try to seal with silicon grease  ::). If you look at any other vehicle (ICE or EV), the reputable ones have proper robust IP66 or better casings with air, dust and water proof connectors! Zero will have to complete redesign and manufacture (or get their suppliers to) proper electronic systems to increase their integrity and reliability!
